    • Methodist 1939 Hymnal
    1 Love came down at Christmas,
    love all lovely, Love divine;
    love was born at Christmas,
    star and angels gave the sign.
    2 Worship we the Godhead,
    love incarnate, Love divine;
    worship we our Jesus:
    but wherewith for sacred sign?
    3 Love shall be our token,
    love be yours and love be mine,
    Love to God and all men,
    love for plea and gift and sign.

    I think the tune is spelt Gartan at least it is in the Old Scottish Presbyterian Hymnal and they would be unlikely to get that wrong. It is a splendid tune and the only one that works for that hymn.

      I checked on Hymnary.com and they spell it Garton. There are often differences in spelling depending on which side of the pond you find yourself. Not a matter of right or wrong, just different.

      @@AndrewRemillard That is fine by me. It comes from the Petrie collection of Irish Melodies and was harmonised by Dr David Evans (Resolven) 1874-1947. The hymn was first published in Time Flies: A Reading Diary (1885)

      The tune is named after the place in Co Donegal where the tune is said to be popular.

    Hi! Thank you for this recording, and for all the information in the description. I am looking for a choral arrangement of this hymn. Would you happen to know if one exists?
