7029 'Clun Castle' Thunders Up To Edge Hill On The Mersey Explorer + LMS Bonus !

- Great Western Castle Class 7029 'Clun Castle' makes for an impressive sight as it thunders up the famous railway cutting from Liverpool Lime Street to Edge Hill on the return leg of the Mersey Explorer to Birmingham. This location had been on the bucket list for many year's and it was well worth the wait to hear the sound of steam echoing of the cutting walls.
After the dramatic climb to Edge Hill we attempted to chase the train back home and given that it was booked non stop to Wolverhampton this would present a challenge. Thankfully we had brisk exit out of Liverpool and the motorways were quiet and this enabled us to get to get to Penkridge station just a mere 10 minutes before the Castle came racing through towards Wolverhampton. What a great way to finish off !
Prior to the earlier exploits of 7029 at the start of the video our actual first sighting of steam was LMS 46115 Scots Guardsman, which was hauling the Coast to Express from Liverpool to Scarborough. A new location for us would see us head to the city Sheffield where we see the Royal Scot class steaming along nicely on approach to Meadowhall, while it was a mundane passage it made for the unusual capture of the locomotive rocking and rolling over the Junction with the tender swaying over the points. While this does happen regularly, its not often captured on camera in such detail.

How exhilarating it must be to drive a large loco on a long trip at high speed these days. There was a great shot of Clun being fired as each shovel full of coal went in there was the consequent plume of dark smoke (unburnt coal dust perhaps?) showing the fireman's hard work.

The Lime Street tunnels made famous by the late Eric Treacy in numerous books of which I have a few ! Good to see a video clip of the climb.
Great videos guys, well done. That was some travelling to get those shots. What a disgrace is Edge Hill Cutting, all those trees growing,,! I videoed the Scot from Marsh Lane road bridge in New Mills, and there are bushes growing well roadside on it. The old gangers would have a fit!!

Fabulous piece of film, not a great fan of Great Western Locos, but "CLUN" looked good and performing well. The shots of Scots Guardsman with that tender sway over the junction, were awesome.

Cracker of shots of 7029 Clun Castle. Ya did well for the 2nd shot as she headed towards Wolverhampton. There was a speed restriction of 20 MPH in the moseley hill area on 1 of the bridges which had helped in you 2 getting to Penkridge before 7029 showed up. Great seeing you 2 yesterday at Edge Hill. Richard
Cheers Richard, the TSR at Moseley Hill certainly helped but also we had a quick exit out of Liverpool which was unexpected.

Cracking shots at Edge Hill Liam and Phil and not often a Castle blows off . Looked a bit rammed at the platform end in your first shot after watching the Harnetty video ☹️
Cheers Steve, its was like a rugby scrum down the the front, everyone was well behaved lol ! Next time I'll just need to capture a Scot or a Jube and then I'll be happy. We're now looking forward to a plethora exursions on the 24th this month. We'll be cutting across from the NYMR for this, should be a great day,
