    Beautiful movie. I was so struck at how similar the language, landscapes and culture are to rural Afrikaners here in South Africa!

    This is so very calming and beautiful! Nowadays children wouldn’t easily have this type of experience, they grow up with technology and live THROUGH their phones instead. We text our friends to catch up instead of connecting in person. We share our lives on social media and portray and fake perfect looking life instead of going out and making friends. Everything’s different now. I envy our previous generation

      I've thought about a sequel, but financially I can't make it. My movie Pancho was somewhat of a sequel/extension of that idea.

    I can understand Standard German and a bit of Dutch, so I could pick up on a few words.
    I may be wrong, but I believe I heard at 3:17 "Wohnst Sie in Marksco?" "No ek komm van Kanora" I think I also heard
    Grosmama (Grandmother)
    Ek Wot Nich (I don't know, Ich weiß es nicht, ik weet nie
    Wo wohnst ji?
    Even though I couldn't really understand this video, it was still interesting to watch. It is nice to see that the Mennonites appreciate and maintain their culture, especially their language.

    • @WilFriesen
      @WilFriesen  Před 10 lety +6

      You're almost right. 3:17 is: " Do you live in Mexico?" No, I come from Canada".
      Actually, the culture here in Mexico is very diverse nowadays. Kids are Speaking Plautdietsch at home, but they learn to read and write Spanish, English and German in school. For me, I don't really write plautdietsch because I never learned how to.
      Thanks for watching.

    This is a great short film. Thank you for sharing! Is there any chance you could share the script? It would help those of us who are trying to learn the language. Or even an English translation of the script, since writing Plautdietsch is a very new thing. Again, thank you very much for this and your other videos!

    • @WilFriesen
      @WilFriesen  Před 9 lety +5

      Blake Hamm I can look into adding subtitles via youtube.. As for the script, there's not much dialogue. The video, or the story, was made in such away that one could more-less visually understand it. For now I'll just give you the translation here. Cheers!

      I don't write Plaudietsch well so I will just respond in English. Thanks for your comment. Also, you think you may have noticed some mistakes, but everything you mentioned was done on purpose. Many boys nowadays wear overalls with a t-shirt and without a hat or cap. Also, visually, it looked better for the boy to not wear a hat. As for the girl's character, her broken Plautdietsch was also done on purpose because her back story is that she grew up in Canada, and so she would have only learning a bit of Plautdietsch at home.
      I thought that the dialogue explained everything well enough.

      I have some cousins that live there... Most Mennonites in Bolivia are still very conservative and live a very strict life. Most men are more outgoing and willing to talk to strangers, but the woman are quit shy overall and only speak one language.

      ha ha. I like your honesty...and if you say that this video is "boring", you might be right, but only because you can't fully understand the language, or you don't understand the culture, or you don't realize what the kids are actually experiencing and discovering about life, as they are growing up.
      One thing I've learned in music and video... don't try to create something that everyone will like, because you can't.
      I WOULD like to know WHY you think it's "boring".
