how much of this is following the rules of every enemy and how much of this is memorization? sometimes the bats dodge to the left, sometimes they dodge to the right... skeletons that are vertically aligned are off by half a beat...

What do you mean vertically aligned? Also the bats move to wherever they're looking at.

like with a lot of rhythm games there's going to be an element of memorization involved, but the memorization follows the beat, like with certain half beats

The bats look in the direction they move, offbeat skeletons have diferent shadow colors
