I had a friend in Milwaukee who had about the same one only bigger. He used it to store body parts and filled it with muratic acid. It was awfully smelly though.
Another advantage of those clamping bands is the slot designed to take a customs seal band, you can easily fit a travel padlock through to show if someone has opened it or keep kids out :)
I have some of these and cannot get the smell from the pharmaceuticals that were shipped in them. The meds were in a liner but the smell is still in the plastic. No way to store water in that.

I just got a new 30 litre one today and it is a nightmare to open. You say just bend the clasp back a little and your one easily opens mine doesn’t. Mine is also a nightmare to put the steel band back on and close it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

That looks like a 30l one to me?

Just remove the little metal thing from clasp which prevents it opening.
