This is a great-sounding soundboard tape of Max Webster from 1974. The reel-to-reel tape was only labelled "Max live," so I was I left to do a bit of detective work. Long story short, it's very likely one of the four shows at Larry's Hideaway between September 16 to 19, 1974. This is the earliest known recording of most of the songs present here. As these early setlists indicate, most of what would become their debut album is written by 1974.
Terry Watkinson's song Do You Or Don't You Want To Know has a much different arrangement from later live versions. It would eventually morph into both Charmonium and Night Flights, but those seeds are barely visible here.
This is my favourite version of X + Y. Mitchell's jazzy and exploratory lead break in the middle is accentuated by the stereo delay - absolutely marvellous stuff.

Most people don't know how small Larry's Hideway was . I was one of the few lucky ones to see Max there many times as they made musical History. Max outdid the Beatles at the Cavern club and The Who at Leeds plus plus ZOONEY of Arkadia
I saw Gary's very first gig with Max at Larry's...approximately oct/nov 76
I was there a few times ( under age) I remember Kim having this cool hat, with a wire in it. He could manipulate it to go forward or sideways. I went and bought a pink one. It came in its own zippered carrying case. The band was smokin hot! Sticky beer floors and a smoked filled room. Good times!!

Two years after this recording, I had the privilege of booking this great band for a high school concert. Great guys, total pros and a class act on and off the stage. Also enjoyed summer nights rockin' out with them at the Ontario Place Forum and its great, rotating concert stage. Awesome band and so much fun at their shows.

I completely agree with you. I’ve always said that Gary McCracken had one of the smoothest easiest flowing drum roll I’ve ever witnessed ,You can just hear it. Truly one of the most underrated drummers of all time. Must’ve been a real bitch having to open up for Neil Peart every night.
This is definitely not Gary.
That would be Paul Kersey. McCracken came after first album, a powerful drummer.

We know for certain that Lily dates back to 1973, Here Among The Cats and a couple others are February 1974 at the latest, and whole bunch more date to November 6, 1974 at the latest. A lot of the arrangements on this recording are identical to those (Toronto Tontos in particular with the longer intro). That tape is up on this channel too - czcams.com/video/CoMhJ1eigm8/video.html
But here's where the forensic work (and perhaps guesswork) comes in - this recording almost certainly predates that November 1974 tape because the first soundboard they played through was upgraded before that gig. One of the crew guys told me how they originally daisy-chained two 8-track units together with primitive reverb and delay, which is heard at the beginning Summer's Up and the end of Beyond The Moon on this tape, but not on the November show.
The only way we'll learn more about this is if more 1974/75 tapes pop up.
I tend to agree, some of the songs don’t seem to match the timeline, worth looking into but who knows?
Weird to hear Beyond The Moon so down-tempo. To me that tune was always their showstopper.
Half of the Max catalogue was already written by 1976 - their process is mighty fascinating. Plenty of these songs took years to come to fruition, and it's like watching Michelangelo paint in slow motion.
Flamboyant would be more accurate, I always felt Paul was perfect for Max Webster, roto toms and all

Kim wore a flight suit and took this band to new heights. Kersey got replaced cause he was too egotistical. I attended a Carmen Appice drum clinic and at it's conclusion Paul Kersey was wearing a T -shirt with a drummer playing a huge double bass kit. Carmen asked Paul whose pic it was and unabashedly he said "that's me"
