I actually have an Interesting concept for Leo's addition into a possible sequel but it would probably be controversial:
The Lee family curse on generations of women turning into giant red pandas, and Leo is the first and only male that can turn into one, much to the confusion of Mei as she's the only one who saw him transform. His mother knows he can turn into a Panda, but won't say why it's been kept a secret even from the grandmother. He's forced to keep it secret, which is why he's so moody and a jerk to Mei; a withholding of emotions and stuff..
But then, we later find out that Leo (and here's where the hot water could come in) was born female, but identifies as male. Him and his mother feel like they would be shunned by the family if the truth got out, so she decides to lie and say she needed another seal for her, but was actually for Leo.
The reason the family thinks Leo was always a boy, was because Leo's mom was shunned from the family and was never talked about after some "incident". The incident being that she fought her mother just like Mei's mom did, but worse.

Edit 2: THE CONFLICTS ARE SI MUCH BETTER , the talk with her mom is way better and the BOY PANDA CHASE IS AWESOME
So much cooler to make it a different reason to use this power other than .... woman periods 😑
