Pink Floyd addressed this quasi-payola scam directly on their "Dark Side of the Moon" album with the song "MONEY." They extended their commentary with the lyrics they composed and played in the album "Animals." As you noted, MTV broke the back of the scam, and the internet nuked it.

You should do more "Crazy but True Music History" !! I would suggest a video on Morris Levy, who is a very interesting character. Something that also ties in with him is the Tiger Lily record label, and tax scam record labels, and also the band Stonewall which relates to it all. Lastly, I think doing a video on the loophole "legal" bootleg releases in the 1980's in Europe (Beatles especially) that led to some interesting imports here in America. Hell, a video or two about vinyl bootlegs in general would probably be very interesting (you could find them in flea markets in the 80s) and how it really started with Bob Dylan.

Eric, Vinyl the Tv show, touched on payola, the guy who got killed was the DJ who was the record kingmaker at that time.
That was one of the best shows I had seen in a long time, In 2016 it was too big and costly for it to work out.
I was gutted when it was pulled. The cast, the writers, director, the music, the stage sets, the streets, it had it all, what a shame it couldn't continue running. At the time, it looked like it was too expensive for Tv to handle.

That transition to making the artists pay more for promotion in addition to studio time is something artists still complain about. They see so little return in licensing to the internet media outfits that some are turning to their own promotions and exiting the new traditional music biz.

In 1978 the ILR ( independent commercial local radio ) station along the coast from me , Portsmouths’ Radio Victory’s’ singles chart was supposedly based on sales from just 4 Record Shops in the city . For instance they would play diverse artists or songs such as White Punks On Dope by The Tubes , Roadrunner by Johnathan Richmond and Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel - which weren’t being played by BBC Radio 1 during daytime. Nowadays in the so called free market no such diversity exists although Solsbury Hill is played a million times more than when it peaked at No27 in 1978 ! Thanks for your work 👍🏴❤️

This is such a lazy argument and I get so tired of seeing it. There is a ton of diverse and exciting music that is being made all the time and is more accessible now than ever before. Impactful art is never going to be served on a golden platter for you. Seek it out, and you'll find it. For a small example, just listen to Derek Trucks, Tame Impala, or Anderson .Paak and your "all sounds the same" just washes away instantly. Hope you are well m8, it's not all doom and gloom! Not to mention, musical instrument sales have been at an all time high!

More so than just bands and album reviews, I def think you could carve prob an even better niche talking about a lot of this old school stuff that gets forgotten. From radio to tape and tv, the way the industries have changed through different eras. Multiple ties to the mafia. There's just so many interesting stories out there. Music is such an important thing in society that it reaches things like the government, or the mafia.and in today's day and age, you aren't called crazy for saying that, as the proof is out here for us to see, whereas 30 years ago if you said the music industry was run in part by the mafia, and a bunch of subsidiaries that might as well count as the mafia, ppl would Call ya crazy

I grew up outside of Philadelphia in the 60s, where we had two Top 40 stations, WFIL and WIBG. The only difference between the two and within the two was the character of the individual DJs. Otherwise, they all played the exact same music. That gave us reason for pause, but we never suspected that payola had never left the business.
Later on, you heard of certain DJs pushing a newcomer, e.g. Bruce Springsteen in the Philly market, but that was on FM radio where I suspect the DJs had more latitude to play what they wanted.
