    I have to say I don't agree with the "good smack on the shoulder when they run out" as this is just frightening the horse, particularly if you have a young horse that isn't really understanding what you're asking. You need to be patient with horses, particularly when you're asking them to jump something difficult like a narrow fence or a fence with a filler that they're scared of. "A good smack on the shoulder" is just going to frighten them more. And I understand that when a horse is being naughty they have to be told off, but you have to evaluate whether your horse is actually being naughty, or whether they simply don't understand. A smack on the shoulder is not going to 'build the trust' that Mary is so keen to encourage.
