    They talk about flies being the national bird of Australia... But we saw up close what a formidable enemy they are anywhere they can reach these numbers. Not only do they annoy the cattle and the people caring for them, they literally are taking money from the farmer's pocket. The amount having to be spent on counter measures is bad enough. But it's the weight loss caused by bothering the beasts that must hurt the most.

    Tyler great job working your herd alone!
    I agree, get that oil pipe and get your pen safe and secure. It will benefit you in so many ways. You will have less stress working your cattle, it increases the safety of your herd and that translates to your safety. You are such a hard worker!
    You’re doing well with getting your ranch in working order. I can’t wait to see you updating the corral fencing.
    STAY SAFE and HAPPY!

    It’s been cold here in Upstate New York for June. With the smoke from the fires up north we’ve had from 30° at night to 60° during the day, and also no rain. The farmers are concerned here. Some lost crops back in May because of a late frost, and now no rain. Hopefully we’ll get some in the next couple of days.
    I’ve come to really appreciate how dangerous your job can be, especially because you’re doing it by yourself. That being said you keep the cattle all so calm.
    Buddy is so cute and funny, so laid back. I get such a kick out of seeing him, I’m so glad you include him.
    Did that little late calf get back with her mama? I’m sure she did, and I’m sure you were exhausted by that time. You got it done. And made it look easy. I’m glad you were spraying, because those flies were getting really bad. It’s funny I was just thinking about those pesky flies.
    Okay so now you’re half done. Now the winter pasture and what about those at the steer pasture.
    And on top of all your work you’re filming, and making it interesting. Great job Farmer Tyler Range! I enjoy your videos.
    Thanks for posting. Greetings to you and your beautiful family from Upstate New York. 👋🏻😁

    One thing that my grandfather always had when he had cattle was to have some chickens (and usually other assorted fowl like guineas) with free range across the farm. The flies lay their eggs in the cow pies, the chickens pick through them and eat the maggots. It's not a 100% fix of course, but the flies were noticeably less on our farm compared to my uncles with all else being basically the same. The chickens always became pets over time since we never harvested them, but the cost to keep them was minimal for the service they provided!

      And you had some egg suprises

    • @rajoba7981
      @rajoba7981 Před rokem +1

      That’s wonderful! I’ve heard others with cattle and chickens say it helps a lot with the flies. Some also don’t freerange the birds, but move both them and the cattle daily. As I understand it, ideally the birds are moved to where the cattle grazed three days earlier. Then the fly larvae are hatching in the cow pies.
      I know it’s labor intensive, but otherwise it sounds like a win-win situation. The cows being less bothered by flies will thrive, and be healthier, and the cost of feed for the birds are less, as their diet consist so much on fly larvae.
      Joel Salatin calls his birds his «pasture sanitation programme», and says instead of costing a lot of money, it provides income.

    • @robertaustin7752
      @robertaustin7752 Před rokem +1

      There's nothing wrong with doing it on a rotation, but the birds will also do that naturally if you just let them roam. Roving around is their instinct, so unless you wanted to take eggs off them and need them to go back to the same spot each day, letting them doing their own thing is one less thing to worry about!

I suppose, by your spraying the herd today, it didn't work to well. I was hopeful that you would have good results. On a different note, I think the tiny calf is the most adorable thing imaginable.
