Being from Mumbai, I got my driver's license by driving a car 20 feet forward and 20 feet in reverse. Then I got my motorcycle license without riding a motorcycle because the driving inspector told me he didn't have time to take my test and that I should just go home because he's going to pass me anyway.

My parents are originally from India, and when I showed my mom this video, she told me the story of how she got her license back in the 90s. The people at the testing center came to learn that she was about to get married to my dad and move with him to the US, and so they basically told her, “Oh, you’re not gonna be here long. Well, we won’t give you any trouble then” and gave her a license on the spot lol

As someone who got his license on a manual car in India, the driving "test" was driving around a mostly empty path on the license premises. However, the training to get to the test.. It was constant hell with real traffic driving in Mumbai and the instructor screaming profanities at me for every small mistake. I think due to this I can pick up manual relatively easy even after driving auto for more than 6 years.

Well, I gave my driving test few months ago in India, and it's a lot tougher than that. Things have improved.
I had to get a learners first by giving a written test. Then I had to wait for 1 month before giving my driving test.
Then the driving test itself was very tough with a very high failure rate of around 60%. The test comprised of 4 tasks, namely Parallel parking, Hill stop start, Driving in 8, Reverse S. All these tests were done in a computerized test track with very specific time limits. And It was TOUGH !!!
So I would say, Things have changed, and changed for good !

CZcams is recommending me after 11 years. 😆 Things have changed ,in fact it was never easy to get a licence here in Kerala. 😬
Step 1. Get a learners license after passing a computer based test.
    2. Attended compulsory road safety class by RTO
3 computerized Driving test (H) for car & (8) for two wheeler
    4 Road test with RTO
Most people fail in last step as they forget to put on the seatbelt and RTO is quite serious about it🤧😪.
And then you get ur license after clearing all stages 😌
I have heard it's much easier in other states🤭😁

My experience getting driver's license was completely opposite.
I had to pay bribe to get opportunity for driving test after waiting for 6 months.
I had to demonstrate parallel parking, stopping and starting car on slop without rolling back, extended eight(eight looks like 2 zeros imagine it with three zeros vertically, I don't know technical term for that) and "S" in reverse.
And do all of this within 8 minutes.

I'm sorry but, I'm the son of an assistant city prosecutor in pasay, while that entitles me to nothing but jack shit, I probably get introduced to more people in the LTO than Former President Erap, no strings were pulled, even if I tried, new regulations make it difficult, even for a senator. I even took the written exam just to drive my mom to her office in a manual.
