GOOD Music (also known simply as GOOD, stylized as G.O.O.D. Music; a backronym for Getting Out Our Dreams) is an American record label founded by rapper Kanye West in 2004. The label signed an exclusive long-term worldwide label agreement with the Island Def Jam Music Group in 2011. In 2012, the label released its debut compilation album Cruel Summer. In 2015, Pusha T was appointed the president of the label by West, while record executive Steven Victor was appointed COO.
The label has released two number-one US Billboard Hot 100 singles, "All of Me" by John Legend, and "Panda" by Desiigner; as well as nine number-one US Billboard 200 albums: Finding Forever by Common; Dark Sky Paradise, I Decided, and Detroit 2 by Big Sean; The Life of Pablo, Ye, Jesus Is King, and Donda by Kanye West and It's Almost Dry by Pusha T.

As someone who spent half my adult life in the music industry, this is how all labels, (whether indie or major) work. There's always a couple cash cow artists that the label relies on to fund the many smaller artists they just throw at the wall with minimal effort and bare bones budget to see if it blows up. Yet when the big artist is releasing they pour a disproportionate amount of their resources into making it big, and if it flops it's still the less established artists that take the hit. They'll either get dropped or have their budget and/or labour time allotted to them cut even further. It's a really bad system to support new artists and fails them 9 times out of 10.
Very insightful comment! Thank you
I have good songs as well
@@ktbecstasy I wasn't a musician, I was on the label side of the industry. Working class schmucks with a passion for the indie artists they work with get rung over the coals just as much as the artists do
Isn't this what TDE did with Kendrick being the cash cow?
@@nicholaslewis279 yes and now that he’s done w them they don’t know what to do
this is why the weeknd was right to turn down drakes OVO label. he would have been "the guy that writes for drake". his biggest achievement would have been him singing hooks for drake. he took a risk, and it paid off. Young artists need to realize that these "opportunities" are not guaranteed success. Even kanye had to fight for his life to get supported at Rock-a-fella.
Exactly
and look at where partynextdoor ended up, he produced his first and second album by himself, great singer and songwriter, wrote a lot of hit songs for drake and god knows who else, and now hes just left behind. that was probably the smartest thing the weeknd could've done. got the drake feature, some songwriting credits and got out to do his own thing.
@@N4orEditorYOU are right. PND is suposed to be a superstar.
I’m actually sad you didn’t cover anything about how G.O.O.D. treated Designer, like the guy even has an unreleased tape expressing how dirty they did him

He did. Jump to 8:53
why dont u dig deeper on Designer. Maybe his own fault
Kanye doesn't like when his students start to thrive, plus ye is not a businessman and not a leader
@@heatherboreland5018 but yet everyone else on the label is far more successful than Desiigner and he works just fine with them. He worked with plenty of artists that were more successful at the time at Roc-A-Fella. Yea you clearly don’t know much about Ye and his work.
Being a teenager when cruel summer dropped I really didn’t expect the label to fall off this hard. I remember when GOOD music was the hottest game in town. (Btw you could have mentioned Cyhi cause he really got a sour deal out of this)
What happened w/ Cyhi?
@@lynertia5255 he only got like one album if I’m remembering correctly No dope on Sunday which is amazing but CyHi is/was basically a ghost writer unpaid for Kanye and others

@@GhostSamaritan apparently he’s retiring still citing no label will back him until he gets himself hot
If a record label is owned by a superstar, the star has all the responsibilities to utilize his/her big platform to increase the reach of signed new artists. As you mentioned, Kanye was just not into taking up those burdens. Look at Aftermath, Em was a nobody when he joined but Dre was already a veteran in the game. Eventually Em became much more recognized than Dre. But Em's fame didn't stop 50 from going big. The Game was pretty big too as long as he was inside Aftermath. For a more recent example, Dreamville is doing excellent job. Cole seems to be very serious about his role as the leader. Keeping aside the fact that he has a very sharp eye for good talents, with all those ROTD albums and his S-tier feature verses on his fellow artists' albums, he is making sure the dreamers don't lose the hype. I think it's totally depending upon how much the leader is interested in shouldering the responsibilities. People like Dre and Cole are just natural leaders, while the likes of Eminem and Kanye are more concerned about polishing their own craft.
I’d advice new artists never to sign under an artist that’s poppin..tbh...
Youre forgetting one important thing, Dreamville has Ib! Every label needs that person that will run the whole operation and make sure every thing and everyone is looked after. An artist can never be that, they have to have someone like a Lyor Cohen or a Dame Dash etc to make sure the business is successful. Kanye for a time had Che Pope and now Push as the head. I think they both weren’t good fits cause theyre both artists, he needed a Dame Dash a Hovain or a Yams (R.I.P) to run things.
@@ojvic7297 for an artist to really get that push just sign to a major label but be very smart about the business, don’t get a lawyer thats suggested by the label, make sure you do your proper research and read everything and understand what everything means before you sign yourself away to a crazy deal.
@@ineverswag word up
you forget that albums like cruel summer 1 and 2 existed and that kanye gifted lots of tracks to good music artist
You forgot to mention that Kanye himself said that he only made cruel summer to get a budget from his record label to make the short film he premiered at Sundance film festival.
Complete slap in the face to the artists who worked so hard and championed that album, Sean specifically. It was in a breakfast club interview I believe where he said it - I’ve still yet to see that movie
It was premiered at Cannes Film Festival in 2012 on a custom 7-screen theatre setup designed by famous architecture firm OMA. It was shot using a specialized camera rig so that it would be like 'surround vision' (think surround sound but, well, the visuals are all around you as well).
That's why you can't really see it. It was a one-off showing.
@@thomasnelson5758 wow, thanks for that insight.
You forgot that in 2013 Travis Scott got signed as a producer then since that day Travis never really produced ever again, even on his own records.
He still had some involvement in Owl, Days and Rodeo, but if I’m not wrong the lasts things he actually had something to do with production for other artists was a Rihanna song from Anti, and some things in TLOP, now he just raps and that’s it, Mike Dean does everything
070 has an amazing sound. I think she’ll keep gaining popularity since her beats and vocals are so refreshing/unique
I think the simple answer would be that as Kanye was getting more into fashion and his YZY brand he didn't have the time to focus his energy on his label. Pusha-T as president should be doing more because he is left in charge essentially.
What Wayne did with Drake is the PERFECT example of how to leverage your hype to excel a newer artist on a label you own. Period. Even Ye didn’t get the embrace from Jay that Wayne gave Drake. It’s indisputable.
Wayne was the best at shining his light on up and coming acts.
@@Mook05 he’s just that humble while still knowing he’s the shit 🤷🏽♂️🔥
GOOD Music was my favorite label growing up. Kanye, Common, Pusha T, Cudi, Big Sean, CyHi, John Legend… the best!
The fact D’Banj wasn’t even mentioned at all is also just kinda sad
this was nice, you should make it a series. Talk about other record labels: OVO, AWGE, TDE, Dreamville etc
Atleast TDE and dreamville have left. A print. Drake has donr jack for OVO artists
This was an amazing video. That big sean story is heartbreaking and the fact that he has no hard feelings shows how mature big sean is

That can’t tell me nothing mixtape was fire. That “dreaming of your love” is one of my favorites too of that mixtape.
Between G.O.O.D Music, MMG & Young Money hip hop looked very promising in the early 2010s. They made my high school & college years. Now everything has just collapsed
Let's take a moment to think about where desiigner could have went if he wasn't in good music
no where he was dogshit and if you listen to his new music its dogshit. panda popped off cuz it was a future clone
No where
he cant handle the fame
Ye really did Sean dirty. Also with Cudi lately
The Sean thing was absurd, Sean is just such a chill dude, besides that he was always very thankful and loyal to ye
He left out the part where Big Sean dissed Kanye for his presidential campaign. THAT'S why Kanye said that, not because he left the label lmfao. Same thing with John Legend, he did a similar thing during the election. Pusha T voted for Biden and therefore against Kanye, but Kanye isn't mad because Push didn't publicly diss him

For those who don’t know 070 Shake go give her a try, she literally has her unique sound and it’s truly amazing. Good video overall and really sad how a really good roster couldn’t make it because people don’t know how to manage it when they have all the resources to do it, pretty sad. 😢
Mr. Hudson was definitely one of my favorites on the label.
I know the majority of other labels are the same but it’s truly baffling how they fumbled the bag with the marketing potential for all of these artists.
As an independent label owner I am actively involved with each artist. I have seen this happen with local indie artist that get their first 100k
Well I think the legacy is pretty good, just that they fell of in the present day. They still got an amazing discography most labels don't and an interesting diverse artist roster throughout its history.
Wasn't Q-Tip also involved as a producer? You didn't really cover Very Good Beats, since they also have a section for producers. I think nowadays that's more of a focus than artists.

Griselda did more to promote their music on their own label than Shady/Interscope ever did. It took 2 & 1/2 years to release their major label debut! I wonder what will happen now that they've left Shady and Benny the Butcher's now on Def Jam (which barely seems more active itself than G.O.O.D. or Shady.)
Kanye and GOOD Music should have done more with Sa-Ra Creative Partners. They really helped mould the sound that defined Kanye and the label at the time.
I remember listening to cant tell me nothin on the radio in the car when I was little and any songs around that era and my mom and dad had cds to play too. An interesting subject for today's video. Always heard about the frustrations by the likes of people like Desiigner, Kid Cudi (+ many more) but never knew why

Good Music has many hits, and great artists that cane out of it. It is not a faillure, it has ran its course, just like many projects and labels.
exactly what’s happening with SoFaygo under Cactus Jack
You’re right man Sofaygo felt like the next big thing. It’d be interesting if he was on 0pium
I think a large part of this label failing has a lot to do with where Kanye has been in life in recent history. He has gone through alot over the last 2-3 years and we all know stuff he has done hasn’t exactly been received well my everyone. When you add this on top of the past of Kanye not caring it becomes rather understandable. I don’t think saying Kanye west doesn’t care about what other people think is new but what is new relates to this almost “new generation” Ye.
There is obviously no definition of what I’m referring to as this “new gen Ye” but to preface it’s the changes in recent memory we have seen from Ye from his divorce with Kim to his social media about free speech to his interview with tucker Carlson, Kanye is evolving as a new version of himself. Divorce is hard, not seeing your kids often is hard, seeing your ex wife date someone else is hard, being blasted by the media because you’re upset about your ex dating someone is hard. I could go on and on but the point is what this has done to Ye. Which I believe is a large part in the question of “why did his label fail”, I was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age. I’m not comparing me to Kanye by any means I’m just saying I understand how hard something can be with distractions and I don’t think anyone on this planet has more distractions than Ye does. To see this new version of him going on talk shows and such has been really cool for me because he seems very happy. To be honest I don’t know anything about the Industry side of music as I believe most don’t all I’m saying is how hard it is to succeed in any industry with the lack of focus and drive everyone else brings to the table. Elon musk can’t have a successful company just because his name is slapped on it, it takes work and dedication which Kanye has struggled with in the past stretch of time (until more recently).
Great video bro can we please get an It’s Almost Dry album review? It is widely considered an AOTY contender
Does anyone know what happened to the video volksgeist did about everywhere at the end of time by the caretaker?

That Can't Tell Me Nothing mixtape was dope.
That’s what I’m saying Dani needs to shine like when you can’t kill me came out I was like why wasn’t this marketed this album is amazing and no one knows like 070 shake is truly a great artist and I don’t thing good music deserves her she needs to thrive somewhere else
Shake should just do her own thing - she’s too young, fresh, and unique to let that kind of talent be squandered
Dope vid 💯
I think rn only J.Cole's label dreamville is doing something good and meaningful .
Pglang will be a contender with time if Kendrick runs it right
That’s crazy that this video was suggested for me today of all days this morning on my daily jog I just discovered who 070 Shake was from a remix that one of my favorite artist Tame Impala did I think it was called “guilty conscience” and honestly that shit was amazing it’s to me the perfect kinda music that type of music that makes you feel something that music that takes you away. And it just proves your point further that no label support can really kill an artist chances of finding their true audience smh sad

Schooboy Q, Jay Rock, and Ab soul could of been in better places right now

Im scared Cactus Jack is gonna have a similar faith. Travis will Thrive and Don Toliver will forever be their biggest signing but who else does anyone know on CJ?
Excellent video.
I'm mad about the Big Sean shit. He seemed to be gladly carrying that label on his back, for soooo long.
It seems like with desiigner and Wes, ye knew their singles would pop with his money behind them, and signed them solely to get the masters for their hit singles.
It sucks being outside from the middle of January until the middle of March
What song does kacy hill have with thug?
I don't see how a label who was one of the larger pieces of like 5 different musical legends' careers can possibly be a failure. It launched the careers of Cudi, Sean, and John Legend of all people...
Its not a failure by any means, the Kanye hate train is popular right now so ppl cash in for views
Can you make a video on Star Trak label? Some of my favorite bands signed to Star Trak but all fizzled out.

CRS is the best song off of "Can't Tell Me Nothing". i love this mixtape
SA-RA Creative Partners was also Signed to GOOD and their album Black Fuzz was shelved and till this day hasnt seen the light of day .
I would argue most artists on good music had a great start just being mentioned next to kanye. The dramatic exits make for a great story otherwise good music has made more successful artists than o.v.o there’s no parallel
After watching this I feel like signing to a Artist label is selling yourself wrong because half of these people already too busy with their personal business.
Young Thug would be one of the best examples when it comes down to an Artist Label so far
*Valee* was definitely mishandled by GOOD.. an alt-trap legend
he was never given the resources he deserves
If I was an up and coming artist I would never sign to a famous artist 's label. For a start the famous artist will always be the priority and will get all the resources allocated to him/her, and they will not want to get outshone so to speak. So many of these types of labels have signed artists and then just shelved them permanently or used the artist to become ghost writers.
My favorite artist owned label in History is probably A&M. LaFace had a great run too, but more than most fail.
Always thought 070 had a good sound. Gotta admit Kanye has an ear
I think G.O.O.D. Music had a good success ratio of artists compared to other labels such as OVO label, Dj Drama’s Label, and so on. Looking back on the artist, the ones that were “failed” are Desiigner and 070 Shake (Desiigner already made it hard with copying another artist complete style and sound) Desiigner was going to fail if he did not switch and he did have support from the label over the years such as pushing his music like Life, Outlet, Timmy Turner, and a few more (not too many others that popped like those). 070 shake is interesting, but I do not know if the label knows how to market here and they have not tried, maybe due to Desiigner not popping off as they may have hoped (basically they do not want to put more cost in something that won’t get as much output). All the other artists signed to GOOD music have had long careers in different ways such as Big Sean, Pusha T, Teyena Taylor (not many people knew of her until the 5 project 2018 summer).
Good music was downhill right when kid cudi left!
Kid Cudi got that "Entergalactic" album just been released yesterday.

Make a video on how record labels make their money. This video would make sense then.
That’s 10 #1 albums sir
Yoo you should talk about dreamville next
Nah, I disagree. Good music was not a failure, just the albums alone that were mentioned in the video are proof that it was a success. The artists signed under the label became household names and had a solid impact in the game. The label changed the landscape, all their artists gave us different fresh sounds. Artists leaving shouldn't diminish how important the label was to the culture. Good music had a good run.
Regarding all the labels with a bunch of ppl not being able to drop when the albums are ready. You gotta look at it like this IMO we can sign talent and keep them in purgatory and make sure our number one stays number one. Labels aren’t gonna pump every artist up just cause they on the roster they just save the number 1 spot
Don't forget about Dbanjs Oliver Twist Hit
idk what people were expecting with good music. In all honesty it was a success. Kid Cudi and Big Sean gotten major mainstream and commercial success. Pusha T gotten a career comeback and Common and John Legend gotten plenty of critical success. Outside teyana Taylor, Desiigner, and maybe sheck wes how did good music fail it's artist? Do people think it's Kanye's fault all their artist isn't a "Drake" I mean level your exceptions
You missing a bunch en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOOD_Music#Former_acts
070 Shake also got done pretty dirty by GOOD, Valee and Ant Clemons also never had their fair shot when the fire artists as well
Cyhi wasn't signed to GOOD Music. He was just hanging out with them since he already had a deal
They still owe him
@@spliffsforbreakfast Kanye?
I still don't know if you can call GOOD a total failed experiment tbh... between all the Grammys won (Common actually won a Grammy for Finding Forever) and #1 albums, I think GOOD just naturally fizzled out towards the end of the 2010s. But from like 2004-2019 they were doing pretty well. A good 15 years. For a vanity label (Which is what most of these artist-led labels are) I'd say that's pretty decent.
It’s not that it failed it’s more that Kanye wanted to do other things and started to move away of music. Most of these artist wanted to work with ye personally. From what teyana has said in the past it seem like he just sent her beats and didn’t work with her personally compared to others.
vory would be a great addition to the current roster, sonically.
Don't quit your day job is a fantastic record
That song with Kanye on it is good
Kanye is working on music still, the other day he was seen showing off some snippets
I’m a die hard Kanye fan but I see that he’s wrong here. I don’t speak for everyone but he just seems like he dips his toes in to whatever he wants to without proper damage control. I get he is a creative innovator but it’s tough to draw a line where he’s stepping moral boundaries. In an ethical standpoint you could argue he’s doing more good for the future with the homeless, etc. but it’s weird with somebody as expressive as him
9 number 1 albums, hella grammys, all star lineup = failed music label 😂
As Sean Andernacht below has already pointed out, this is how all labels work (whether indie or major). I suggest you update your title now that you know better or put (IMO) at its end because as an adult artist who's spent half my life (over a decade) in the music industry your title alone is VERY debatable to put it politely... put more bluntly its simply inaccurate. Anyway am guessing in typical new age trend you will likely keep the false statement title to evoke emotions and drive some click bait... in which case - cool, we all got to eat some way I suppose, so do you but if you are one of the few channels left with integrity and more concerned with providing actual quality over fleeting viral moments then please consider updating your heading. Informative video though (y)
I believe Sheck Wes is still on the label, joint signed to Cactus Jack. I believe he has some stuff he's planning to drop soon. Hope he gets his resurgence. But I disagree with your idea of it being an inactive failure label. Saying Kanye doesn't really do music anymore is kinda silly considering he released the very successful Donda in 2021, and Donda 2 (Its up to debate on if we wanna count it but its still proof he's working on music) literally this year. Pusha T dropped in 2022 and went Number 1, and Sean before he left dropped another number one album. This story isn't that different from a label such as Def Jam, where they have a ton of artists that don't make it. You see more successful artists from huge labels like that, but in proportion, the ratio to successful artists to ones that are left behind is pretty much the same, except one is a mega label with like 50 artist, and GOOD has like 10 at its max.
If you’re mad at this video you either haven’t watched it or are so blind a kanye stan that you’re incapable of criticizing him in any way shape or form. It’s sad

I actually disagree with Eminem not giving anyone else on his label attention. 50 Cent was singed to Shady and he was one of the biggest things on that label at the time. At the end of the day when an an artist own a label they are most likely going to be the main star. But 50 Cents G-Unit Records, Eminems Shady Records, Jay-zs Rock Nation and Dr.Dres Aftermath all have platinum artists
This is why Dreamville took over
