Is this 40k's GREATEST Board Game? | Space Hulk

  • In 1989 Games Workshop released arguably their greatest board game - the sci-fi dungeon crawler Space Hulk. Designed by Richard Halliwell, Space Hulk was inspired by the Alien and Aliens movies and gave players the chance to play tense, frenetic, and fun missions in the derelict space craft.
The desperate battle between man and alien was a 2 player game using plastic Citadel miniatures representing the recently created Space Marine Terminators and the newly redesigned Genestealers. This was the perfect distillation of Warhammer 40,000 themes, offering the most intense games in the 40k universe you could imagine.
I explore the origins of the game, its expansions, its heroes, and its villains.

Ah those darned Heavy Flamers; and even in the “Alien” films proper, fire has *never* been shown to being affective at killing the adult beasts either onscreen, most notably in “Alien” & “Alien Covenant” with the beast being only mildly singed by Starship engines, & “Alien 3” with the dragon *surviving* a bath in molten hot lead.

I think this should definitely be made into a proper cooperative/solo game with automated Genestealer movement.
The Genestealer player's role is really badly designed with very little opportunity for creative problem solving or smart, surprising moves. It's "push forward, roll dice, push forward, roll dice" most of the time, a mindless, emotionally detaching activity that should really be performed by an Automa.

I have to admit I was waiting for this one. Space Hulk was the first GW game I ever purchased, and I had a complete blast with it. Still have it too, albeit the box is beat up and and I might be missing a genestealer and a flame unit or two. Absolutely awesome video, sir.
And regrettably I've only ever had the original first edition and not even an expansion to my name, but I think it says something about the game design that the original boxed set alone was so much fun that I didn't feel the need to go farther.

Oh gosh i love this game! And the expansion sets ("Deathwing" and "Genestealer??"). Also loved the article which explained how you could take power armoured marines but they had the option to carry an armed melta bomb incase they were captured by 'stealers. Think one of the WD missions involved having to put three captured techmarines out of their misery??. Wow! Where did all that come from!?? Great times with good friends and lots of impersonations of the proximity sensors from "Aliens"😆. Many many thanks for this!👍.

Jordan: "...Unfortunately, I have noticed I am running out of Command Points..."
Me: "Rush him lads! He's bound to roll doubles eventually!"
1st edition all the way for me. 3rd/4th Ed have the nicest components, but 1st nailed the gameplay. I don't think you mentioned that the Marine player was supposed to play with a timer on all their turns. After Pitfall came out I managed to get 2 copies each of the base game and expansions for giant multilevel maps, kept them to this day.
The psychic cards in Genestealer were ludicrous, but glorious. Many happy hours spent with Teleporting, Time Warping, Lightning-Arc plasma gun hybrids, whilst any non-psyker Terminators were reduced to bystanders in their own game. It took about 25 years for them to bring back Genestealer Cults in WH40k so I could update my army again.
And we don't talk about 2nd ed. Oh dear... but at least the Terminator minis were a huge step up.

It’s a testament to the 1st edition’s rules that they haven’t fundamentally changed in subsequent editions, just minor tweaks. I think the rules from 1st edition are the best, although I do like ‘guard’ from 3rd/4th so add that rule in for the Space Marine player.

Totally accurate battle game review simulator! That blue cover White Dwarf was the first issue I bought in my small hometown in Sweden and I kept getting most issues for years after. I bought and enjoyed Space Hulk very much for years and played it often with my friends. I had the Deathwing expansion box. It was such a great game and still is I think its sometimes even getting close to Chess in many respects with it simple rules and strategical options. I loved all the art and the dioramas in WD. Recently bought some of those original metal Terminators on EBay and stripped the paint. Need to finish assembling and start painting them up. Good memories! p.s Space Hulk Tactics on the playstation is a good way to play if you're on your own.

I’m a big fan of 2nd edition too especially of the flamer (most realistic I think) rules and the auto cannon rules from the White Dwarf supplement, unlimited ammo! Ive not played this since 1st edition. I did pick up a lovely complete 4th edition a while ago which is sat on a shelf awaiting a rainy weekend. A lot of people seem to rate it solo. Component and tile quality is outstanding in 3rd and 4th edition

Within the past year we've had new terrain for space hulks, new Terminator models *and* new Genestealer models. Surely a new Space Hulk can't be far behind... can it?

The time limit for the Space Marine player was what made it. So nerve wracking trying to get everything done in time!

Excellent review. I love this game and love the Alien film franchise. This game got me into miniatures and i have got back into board games after some 35 years, have got bored of chess.Going to get my original Space hulk and Death wing out now. Thanks.

Space Hulk, easy to pick up, frustratingly hard to master. I think it was this version my older brother bought home, and started yet another competitive tournament with it, pure torture.

6:21 ohhh I recognize these maps, they were in the re-release of the game around 2010 ^^
By the way, if you want, I have a few infos on the video game Space Hulk Deathwing made by Streum On: In fact, back in the days I heard the game was being develloped by them, I sent a mail to their team saying I was ready to work for free for them or to help in any ways, and, surprised by my message, Streum On invited me to come to their studio ^^

I love Space Hulk. Years ago I bought the 2014 edition in lots from ebay. Just bought a 1st edition complete core set purely for the board tiles. Never bought Space Hulk terminators though. I find terminators to be hit and miss, I don't like the 1st edition plastics - too static/cookie cutter, 2nd edition 40k terminators were equally static, 2nd edition Space Hulk terminators weren't great either and more recent plastic terminators have gone the other way and been too dynamic looking. For me the RTB09s hit the Space Hulk vibe, whilst being good looking, on the head. It's only recently though that I've been able to acquire some at reasonable cost. Just need to paint them and the 2014 edition Genestealers...

I think that with the older versions of D&D having been re-created by retro clones and other revitalizations of the game, that Space Hulk and other games that have been abandoned by GW should be re-made, or cloned with all the copyright stuff taken out of it.

White Dwarf 114 was the first issue I ever got, and I used my hard-saved £20 in pocket money to get Space Hulk just after. Pretty sure it's still in my parents loft and can't wait to have a look when I visit next and see what survived (and whether my brother canibalised all the minis for other games).
It was memories of Space Hulk (and the White Dwarf "Pitfall" mission) that reignited my interest in GW when I came across Kill Team Into the Dark.

Space Hulk is great and the reason I got sucked into the hobby again two years ago but when talking about good GW game design one should honorably mention "Deathwatch Overkill" that often gets overlooked as a box to get miniatures instead of a really fun game.

The nostalgia is strong in this one! I spent many an hour in my mid/late teens playing Space Hulk, Space Marine, Advanced Space Crusade, and Dark Future. It was a truly epic period for the big boxed games! Had a game early this summer, almost won a mission as the marines, until an assault cannon exploded and took out a whole squad!
My only criticism of it is that the missions don’t have much connecting them - ASC fixed that with its excellent exploration mechanism.
Wonder if my eight year old is up for exploring a derelict hulk…

A true classic. 1st edition I feel is the best, however the psychic rules are much improved in later editions. The addition of hybrids is one of the better elements of first that later editions have not implemented. That being said, I will play any edition of Space-hulk put in front of me. A true Space-hulk fan here.
