Hello person from Ofallon Township here! Seeing this performance was really eye opening and it showed what separates a good band from a great band. This was by far one of the most stunning performances I have ever seen. Our drill can’t even compare😅.
Carmel old head Alumnus: Congratulations our once and eternal rivals. It’s about time you won again. Screwed in 2015, but this show was special. To play Pictures like that was so creative and engaging. I always said never Avon, but if Carmel can’t win I would prefer Avon to take it all. They make each other better every year, every competition. Thank you for this performance!
It’s changed so much since I was in band tournaments back around 2000. It’s a lot more dancing, rolling on the ground and theatrics, and a lot less difficult marching while playing. Also seems like every band (except this one apparently) has to have a story teller setting the scene in the beginning. I guess that’s just how it is these days, but I do miss our “old school” style.
Ah yeah I really miss hearing the same five musical selections across dozens of bands while they play the easiest arrangements known to man because hardly anyone could play a run with decent timing
I’m so hyped to have Matt come and listen to our band and give us tips this year.. really wish I could march with Avon though. My band really could use good players! 😂

Man, to work with this number of performers! Make a music book difficult, and Drill medium difficult and you have a winner. Imagine Avon and Carmel with 95 kids!
I must admit that among all the really fantastic shows I saw this weekend, this is the one I keep coming back to. Well deserved championship Avon. You all created a show that will be remembered for years to come. Check out my video of 1981 Meade County of Kentucky that opened with Pictures at an Exhibition. They won the contest of champions that year. Show continued with Jack Miraculous and close with Softly as I Leave You.
Wow … Meade County 1981. I was there and recorded the show on a cassette. It’s been one of my favorite marching band shows of all time! A small band with amazing balance and intonation with a creatively designed musical show. There are a couple moments in that show that we’re amazing! They did a dissident chord in Pictures that crescendoed into a major chord. I’ve never heard anything like it until the Blue Devils space chords. The second piece had a nice trumpet feature and the last sustained note by the mellos that lasted over 15 seconds. The closer had a silky smooth low brass feature and a classic 80’s finish with the drum major joining the all front line. Of course the marching was simple compared to today’s shows. I am kinda floored, this is very close to a top corps in terms of balance and performance quality. In the past it was rare to see this. Now there were 3 or 4 shows on that level at nat's
@@ag225-mlI would say 2010 or 2012 (maybe) was the last aggressive brass year Avon had. Everything else since has been chicken little. Visuals on another level tho!
Unfortunately people don’t realize that double tounging and random woodwind runs don’t mean you’ll get first place lol. If BOA was like wgi and partly graded on difficulty then by all means they can complain, but clean and consistency beats all. It also helps that Avon and Carmel are GE powerhouses.
Congrats, I guess?!? How this (and Carmel) beat Hebron will continue to confuse me.... please do not insult musicians everywhere by replying with "Avon was better"... I get that General Effect is a HUGE component but just, no.... Vandergrift and Marcus would have beat them musically and they would not have even won State in Texas! I can see why UIL considers themselves "superior"
I marched Avon in the 2007-2010 era. When we won Nationals in 08 for the first time people said the same thing. Marcus was hot that year but didn't attend BOA. In 09 the buzz in the community was that Marcus HS was gonna come up and show Avon what TX had to offer. Same result. Marcus came up and got 4th.
@@mordakie3810cause uil judges only really care about if you can play an instrument and how well, so texas shows build their show for that because state for texas is a more competitive and awarding thing so tx bands go for that championship
@@mordakie3810 A lot of variables people don't consider in all this too. I graduated Marcus 08 and like 95 percent of the dumline were seniors so I imagine that had some effect on the Nats year too. Unfortunately there just isn't the resources to have the Texas bands go up every year and get the experience, because performing at Indy is not the same as performing at the alamo dome or outside. Everyone has heard of home field adavantage, it's true for sports, it's true for band. Indy schools will have more parents and more support in the stands and more energy to feed off of to put in the performance. I miss when it was feasable to have things like PASIC and DCI finals move around the country and give more people the opportunity to attend.
This show was not musically demanding whatsoever - it was literally just whole notes and half notes across no more than four measure phrases before more visual stuff. About half of it was solos anyway, and the full band just did a bunch of one-note, stand-alone hits. I get that the visuals were more demanding than Hebron, but GEEZ is this really *1st place?*

God I wanna love Avon and Carmel so much but It’s always a yearly debate for me. These programs are undeniable in terms of visual demand. The problem that I see now is that musically these Indiana programs field an intermediate brass book and easily the lowest valve demand on the field. They don’t sound like the Texas Elites or BA and TS. Maybe Texas overall will never look as clean as Indiana as UiL will not allow visual assignments or practice until August 1st every year. Should BOA have such an allowance rewarding Visual and designers only? Rant over but those are things to Consider. Congrats Indiana for having the best HS marchers in the country year over year.
Boring... Hebron was better. So much politics in BOA and WGI. There are better guards and bands other than Avon/Carmel. Its definitively favoritism in this art. Shame....

I agree. Hebron was really close. Avon just hasn't amazed me for a few years. Excellent for sure, but nothing that stands above the competition.
