Right there with you on this one brother. Absolutely the best 50 I've ever owned. I also had the 50 plannar and while that was amazing too, I do find the cron to be a warmer tone and the bokeh is a bit more pleasing imo. And by far it's the sharpest lens I have ever owned. At f2 the corner sharpness at a decent distance is sharper than a lot of other lenses stopped down. Then add the built in hood and just how it looks on the body.. can't ask for more except a focusing tab. But this is a 50 we're talking about so no need to zone focus. 50 is for precision.
Yeah I had the 50 planar years ago when I was starting out, but the 50cron just has that little bit extra magic. It’s a lens I just can’t escape from, I compare all other 50’s I’ve used against this
A worldly wise & more discerning Coop. I’d say Coop found the light after straying with other lenses. Despite so much noise and chatter about all kinds of rangefinder lenses, the 50mm summicron is a lens which has great subtle beauty. Keep it Coop. Your son will thank you later on
Very nice review. I have the same model of the Summicron 50mm and have been happily shooting it for 4 years now. I have also owned the Planar 50/2 and a heap of other 50's from Zeiss and Voigtlander, they were all very nice but I always came back to the Cron as my preferred choice. I'm just over halfway through a personal project with this lens, shooting 50 rolls of Tri-x and making 50 prints with my 50mm over a fifty week period. It's amazing how often a 50mm lens is all I need to make the pictures I want. So I think despite the price many people could buy one Leica body and this lens and spend years getting enjoyment from the combination.
I have the DR version of the Summicron. I love it. The main issue with that lens is that it won't work on my M10, so I use it on the MP and M3 only. I bought the Summilux, it's magic. That lens basically replaces the Summicron for me. Another lens that I find to have that sweet spot rendering, color and contrast is the Contax G Zeiss 45mm f2. I converted it to M mount. Fantastic.
sadly the Konica can (allegedly) have alignment issues with M bodies, and the Planar _will_ eventually explode itself due to the teflon rollers inside of it. I personally feel that Leica ought to update the v5 slightly. specifically, a focus tab and to see if they can deal with the focus shift that's kind of apparent on this lens on digital bodies. until then, I will just deal with the size and weight of my lux asph. if I shot mostly or exclusively film a v5 cron would probably be my first choice, I found the Planar a bit too contrasty.
He never had an issue with focus shift with the 3 copies over owned, your right about the Konica, last copy I had did start to play up and I couldn’t nail focus
@@shootswithcoops focus shift is just a reality in all lenses, to what degree depends on the design. ZM planar has less, but it incurs other problems as a consequence. Now, is shift on the cron enough to ruin your photos? that depends. but it is there and noticeable most clearly at f4-ish near MFD, especially on digital.
There is another Leica lens that is really amazing. I know this lens can't be adapter to mirrorless cameras. Maybe it works on a Rangefinder Leica. It has like a bar on top of the lens and it even makes random photos look amazing. I think its only for film cameras. Everyone that has it loves it.
I think that what you are referring to is the DR model with goggles. That "bar" should be removable and that will allow it to be used on digital and adapted to other mirrorless cameras.
Welcome back! Strange i find the 50 too tight for me. Sold the V4 and recently got the v3. Ive shot 1 roll so far and have yet to develop the roll. Hope it turns out fine. I love a 28 frame line
Bit of a challenge for you - I've only got into shooting about a year ago and I've had the usual GAS but on the cheaper side of things. Despite it's age I keep coming back to my color-skopar on my Voigtlander Vito IIa. You can find Voigtlander vitos around it for peanuts, would really like to hear your thoughts on it.
I’ve only ever seen pictures of the Vito, never held one. But if you’ve found the camera and lens combo that’s best works for you and it’s cheap, you may have broken the matrix lol
I just bought this one for my newly acquired M Monochrom. I have a 50mm Summarit 2.4 on my M11 and a 50mm v3 on my film M5. Not sure if I am going to swap the summicron and summarit on the two digital bodies or not. Still playing around with results and options.
That summarit is very compact and lighter though, I’ve used the 35 sumarit in the past and that was a great lens. I imagine the 50V3 gives a nice classic rendering
Minolta made some lens for Leica and the old Minolta lens are being bought up now and being turned into cinema lens now. But some of those old Minolta lens do give out some radiation.

50 rolls in 50 weeks! That’s so cool
Thanks, all true. It’s a fabulous lens. I have v4 - beautiful on digital and film. It has an atmosphere all its own, especially f2.
I can never decide if I would like the V4 more because of the focus tab or not, I’ve never been able to hold a V4 in the flesh
Welcome back mate!
Thanks mate

I have wanted to pull the trigger on a converted contax 45mm since my fun leader realised the DIY kits
I’ve got the 50 APO with my Monochrom and they are a perfect pairing.

Great vid and some lovely shots in there mate. At just over double the price of a Pentax 17 I know where my money will be going.
Thanks for watching
Nice one, I'm really looking forward to that comparison for my own curiosity 🙂
Seems like “that lens” we’re talking about has been lost on the mail 🤷🏼♂️. But should be a really good comparison once I do get it in the hand
@@shootswithcoops oh no way! Hopefully you get one soon
@pushingfilm the reviewer who had it last seems to have kept it and gone silent hahahah
@@shootswithcoops wow! Just sent you a text

Yeah I lots of people who rave about the Dual range 50cron. I’ve never had a chance to use one myself

I regret selling mine. May pick it back up at some point soon.
Just like me lol

Hide your wives and sisters. That mo harnesses magical powers.
Hahaha cheers, I’m channeling Magnum P.I

The 40mm F2 from the CLE is one of my favourites, great price/size/performance ratio
Love that lens. With the CLE it is a pearl of a travel cam.
Well, others would say the Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50/1.8 is the best. I agree with them. :)
Will have to check that lens out if I can
