DC-9 Landing on Short Runway + High Mountains

  • In 2002 JustPlanes visited AEROPOSTAL of Venezuela and filmed 14 flights in the cockpit of the airline's Boeing 727, Douglas DC9-20, DC9-30 and DC9-50 from its Caracas base to half a dozen destinations in Venezuela as well as to Aruba and the Dominican Republic.
    On this flight operated by a DC9-30 (YV-24C) we follow the unusual approach into San Antonio flying overhead the airport and descending in between the mountains to land on a rather short runway with a mountain at the end.

    i was born in colombia , but i lived almost half of my life on san antonio del tachira ( around 15 years ) , my dad was an Rutaca 737-200 pilot , when he was gonna fly ( almost each day one time ) my mom and me sitted on the little park at the side of the aiport ( the part where the b-57 canberra is exhibited ) and watched my dad takeoff his plane , sadly today this aiport isnt much used on Venezuela , only 2 or 3 flights takeoff from here , today i live in colombia , and sometimes i go back to san antonio and visit my old city. I still love the classic planes of that era , specially the 727-200 ( i flew once on it ) , today i see some private jets like learjets and dassault falcon for no reason , you are a good aiport cipriano!

    We used to fly in and out of this airport on break from doing seismic surveying south of there outside of a town called El Nula in 1984/85. Landings were interesting , but take offs into the “mountains” to get lift and the right hand turn dropping the wing and scooting down the valley were also interesting. Where the terminal is on the right, you could look straight ahead and peripheral vision see both end of the runway...we did it in Avensa 727-100’s too.. the local passengers crossing themselves as we spooled up said it all

    Nice work, and you can use the airplane again. Actually I didn't know any -20s made their way down there. (Had the original body size of the -10, the bigger wing and higher thrust engines off the -31/32/33 - the makings of one hot ride.) Only ten were built and SAS took them all. Seems that ValueJet had a few after SAS retired them.

It would have been a crash. An over-run. There is no room for anything to be less than just right.Great video, great flying. =PC=

      San Antonio Del Tachira is in the western part of Venezuela right up against the border with Colombia and near Cucuta, Colombia. Part of the approach is flown over Colombia. Didn't you hear the Captain say: "To the right, Venezuela, to the left, Colombia, at the center, We!" just before he did the 180 to the left for his final approach? That's the fun kind of flying, very basic and all flown manually.

    • @graceandkevin5017
      @graceandkevin5017 Před 5 lety +6

      Joe Patroni still in the touchdown zone. Do not confuse the aiming point with the touchdown zone. Touchdown zone is 1/3 of the runway and guarantees a safe stop in forecasted conditions with the estimated weight. The maximum weight allowed for this operation is determined prior to flight, so as long the weather conditions are the same as in the briefing it will be no problem as long as the pilots do not touch down beyond the last two white lines.
      If it happens to rain, the pilots will calculate the actual landing distance with a margin of 15% usually, that is called the factored landing distance, and that also guarantees a safe stop as long as you touch down in the first 1/3 of the runway.
      What you call the touchdown zone is the aiming point. That is the point the aircraft would touch down if the pilots did not initiate a flare. The aircraft must be 50ft above threshhold and depending on the stiuation the flare might be longer or shorter. As long as they do not pass the last two lines on the first third of the runway, a safe stopping is guaranteed.
      Inhope i could clarify some things. Cheers

    • @WMAcadet
      @WMAcadet Před 5 lety +1

      He made a flap 40 landing and was easy on the brakes and stopped just fine. Why? Because he makes a quick turn there and does not want hot brakes that will require a cooldown period. Had it been wet he would have used flaps 50 and heavier braking. Thrust reversers are just gravy and are not counted for stopping distance. He did touchdown towards the end of the touchdown zone, but the runway slopes down there and that's why. He flies the DC-9 quite competently IMHO.

      Some facts: San Antonio is a Special Airport, only day and VFR ops, no VASI or PAPI, touch down zone with Slope down, frequent tail wind for the approach (approach is only in rhe direction of the video).
      No AutoBrakes, Reverse were stowed according to procedures and brakes were used bellow 80 kts, at the ramp brakes were cold.
