I'm guessing idealized forms of beauty at the time.
You see the same phenomenon nowadays too, except with some different standard idealized templates being in vogue instead. (Just look at how many Zooey Deschanel/Chris Hemsworth clones there are in Hollywood. Take a step back, and it's sameface everywhere.)
