  • What a song to launch your career with! Reached #6 in 1972. From the famed "Plastic organ solo", to an electric sitar solo, they were already breaking the mold back then. I started my channel because of this band in 2008. I'll send this out to all who stuck with me through the years 🙏💖 YT are making it literally impossible to keep an audience now unless you're monetized. Enjoy the album on my channel & please like & subscribe if possible. It's been a great ride. Thank you. (Lyrics & info below).
In the mornin' you go gunnin' for the man who stole your water
And you fire 'til he is done in but they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singin' as they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hangin' and they put you on the street
You go back, Jack, do it again, wheel turnin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again
When you know she's no high climber then you find your only friend
In a room with your two-timer, and you're sure you're near the end
Then you love a little wild one and she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smilin' you'll be on your knees tomorrow, yeah
You go back, Jack, do it again, wheel turnin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again
Now you swear and kick and beg us that you're not a gamblin' man
Then you find you're back in Vegas with a handle in your hand
Your black cards can make you money so you hide them when you're able
In the land of milk and honey, you must put them on the table
You go back, Jack, do it again, wheels turnin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again

Donald Fagen- Electric Piano, Organ and Vocals
    Walter Becker- Bass Guitar
    Denny Dias- Electric Sitar
    Jeff Baxter- Guitar
    Jim Hodder- Drums
    Victor Feldman- Percussion
[The instrument used on the first instrumental break is an electric sitar, which was played by Steely Dan mainstay Denny Dias (who later became a computer programmer). This is followed by an organ solo, which was played by Donald Fagen. This was described in the album liner notes as "an inexpensive, imported plastic organ (an instrument which long ago fell into disuse in most rock circles)." This was later revealed to be a Yamaha YC-30 with something called a portamento ribbon, which could create the slide effect.]

March 1973 I had just completed US Air Force Basic Training. I was waiting to start Security Police Tech School at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. Back then we got paid in cash. I went to the BX and bought a mid-sized portable AM/FM radio. As I was walking across the pedestrian bridge to the barracks I switched it on and this song started at the beginning. Perfect timing and burned into my brain. This song always takes me back to my carefree 19 year old self just starting out on the adult portion of life. It’s been a great journey.

How many of us can relate to our youth and remember when we were warned about dangers to avoid? And we went 'back, Jack, do it again". We kept doing things again and again, wheels turning round and round. Until we STOPPED finally. But so many of our friends did not. And we lost them.

In 1972 what group could add Ravi Shankar, Wes Montgomery/Kenny Burrell, Elvin Jones, Ron Carter and Dr. Lonnie Smith to a rock/pop jazz influenced song and get air play on every radio station in LA and knock it out of the park in every way? Steely Dan that's who!!!!!!

The first Steely Dan song I ever heard on the radio was Do It Again. As a 12 year old kid, this haunting song captivated me and I've been a Dan fan ever since.

..Their lyrics can fill a book of poetry. The song above illustrates good writing. The meter in each line matches the one above. The flow is smooth. The rhyming pattern is A-B-A-B. You don't NEED melody or sound to read the lyrics and appreciate great writing skills. That's one reason I've always been a fan. I'm a writer so I have to highlight anyone with skills who practices creative writing. Compare this with other song writers. You'll see the huge difference in the quality of the lyrics. Most are forgettable, Fagan & Becker's words come easily even if we haven't heard the song in years.

Amen Brother. i was 10 in '70 and listened to my older sibs spin 45's during the 60's, but the 70's with Albums and the Evolution of The Stereo, Musicians and Talent was like the 60's were Black and White and the 70's Became Neon Lites and Full Cinematic Color....And the Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill changed Lives.

... and not having made enough merit นุญ to break out of that cycle on way to that ultimate quest of nirvana, it's those three defilements that get us all the time: greed, anger, and jealosy. up and down, all the time. that merry-go-round called denial. if "Do It Again" doesn't speak closest to the Four Noble Truths, I really don't know what does.
