I was one of the fire dudes at Mosul (Nov '05-Feb '07) and the Kiowas would fly right over our fire station on Marez at Oh dark thirty. They were my alarm clock, I called them "the Dawn Patrol" lol. It was great doing our ARFF training with those cats.

I was at Marez in Jan 05 until late Feb 05 for the election. We were there when an OH-58 had to crash land (shot up) about 1k outside the base to the Northeast. Both pilots survived with minor injuries.

Joyriding on Christmas day, stealing helicopter collective's, falsifying logbooks, let alone the damage to the helicopter....and more importantly losing your uniform!! What kind of show are you guys running over there lol. Jokes aside I'm glad you recovered, and both of you made it back safe. Thanks for your service & for sharing your experience with all of us.

That was awesome to listen to mate. Sucks it happened but cool to hear it as a conversation between you and your boss/copilot who was there. I came here from the podcast so I could see the pictures.

I was in Tikrit in 2005 the morning one of my colleague’s husband took a round through the face shield of his pilot CVC - we were supported by 1-17, then an 82nd squadron, flying out of McKenzie (I think… memory isn’t the best. Remember it being a rough few minutes for her while I got the BL on it that he was ok - the bullet glanced through his shield, into the padding on the helmet, exited out the top and through the greenhouse glass, where it was deflected off a rotor blade back into the transmission housing. Knocked him unconscious, but his right-seat recovered the ship and got him back to Warhorse (I’ve left names out, but 1-17 was led by then LTC Frank Muth, who, obviously, went on to make GO and last I knew him was when he commanded Knox, around 2018, where I was medically retired. Appreciate everything that SWT’s meant to us - I never felt “safe” but I always felt confident when you guys weee over us.

Another good video brother! I really appreciate both of you making this video. I hope it was theraputic and helped in someway. I have a some time in 117 (if my memory serves me correctly, that aircraft was transferred to 3-17 from 82nd after your deployment) and just hearing the aircraft numbers had me reminiscing. I was at Drum from '99 to '09 so other than the obvious training deployments to JRTC or NTC and the 2 theater deployments, my time in the Army was spent at Fort Drum. Also with you being a TACOPS guy, you may know a good friend of mine from Drum.

This was super cool to listen to. Sorry that it happened to you of course, but it provides a lot more context for what scout pilots go through and do. Growing up, I only ever heard about the Huey, Blackhawk, and Apache type missions because that's what my dad had originally tried to enlist for (ended up getting his contract terminated right before he enlisted due to a medical issue). So, it's been interesting learning more about this kinda unique mission set and the types of challenges you guys went through.

Incredible story man, this stuff is so interesting. I’m a civilian helicopter mechanic from Canada with Bell 206, and 407 experience, and seeing that damage was chilling. The bullet in the swashplate got me - but it just goes to show you how tough even light helicopters actually are. Did the Kiowa have any extra armour/composite shielding for some of the more critical components such as the engine and MGB?
Thank you for your service guys!

I never when through combat in my time in the army. The worst thing that happened to be was getting clotheslined one night while doing a quick-reaction force deployment to an alarm going off inside our exclusion zone. It was pitch black and I ran straight into a guy line supporting out radio antenna - right across the throat. Feet went up in the air and I landed right on my back with my canteen in the small of my back. but I though I'd been shot right in the neck and was going to die. I was grabbing my throat and was feelin for a hole and blood, but found nothing. When I realized I'd not been shot, I look up and could just barely make out a black line going across the starry sky and realized what had happened. My throat was sore for a while, but I had trouble with my back many years afterwards.
The think with shock and all I only experience after a couple of nasty motorcycle ancients I had the honor to be involved with. In the last one I had shattered my left femur, but while laying there on the ground, I only felt a strong burning sensation... until someone thought they should turn my on my side. One took my leg and tried to lift before I could say anything, and then I could only scream. That's when _they_ discovered my leg was broken and just kind of let me be after that. It would have been nice if they had asked first.

    • @DerOrso
      @DerOrso Před 11 měsíci +1

@@CasmoTV To be honest, I was kind of pissed off, especially when I found out the alarm was only for training. Until then I though it was real, and that was during the time in Germany of Bader-Meinhof. The thought of getting shot or blown up was very real.

On my iPad, thanks to the video length indicator in the lower right hand corner, the thumbnail for this video says “Getting shot in the cock”. 🤣😳🤣 Ouch!
Great video! “You using the whole fist, Doc?” 🤣🤣🤣
My brother was a Kiowa crew chief with 1-17 during Desert Shield/Storm. I’m gonna send him this video to see if this was one of the birds he worked on.
Your anesthesia story of hearing things and responding while still too groggy to open your eyes reminded me of mine… While on active duty in the Corps, I popped my right eardrum on Okinawa, and after PCSing to Parris Island, had surgery to fix it at Charleston Naval Hospital. As the corpsmen were trying to wake me up after the surgery, one of them asked me, “How do you feel?”
    Me: “Like shit…” 😵
I never saw them, but I still remember the laughs my completely honest answer caused. 🤣😎👍🏻🤣

It's interesting because I wasn't there, but I generally want to know what was happening. There was no way for me to know about these things at the time. For me, Christmas Day 2006 was winter break in my last year of college. ... knowing that there were a lot of people, a lot of men the same age as me, in a generally not great place doing a - to varying degrees - doing a job that sucks and was dangerous. I mean, I'm sure there were okay or even fun moments. I hope that makes sense.

Good lord, Casmo. I didn't realize you were so tall. Did they have to weld the seat a few inches back in the Kiowa for you? I feel like you would look like me driving my fiancé's Mazda hatchback in that thing...
Does the Apache have any form of armored windscreen? I was watching a pilot doing a walkaround of the AH-1W and was surprised at how thin he said the canopy was. Glad to see you were able to heal up and keep flying.
