This song is a cry for help from someone that knows they're losing their mind. Syd knew that music was his passion, but for some reason, every time he'd get into recording, he'd lose it. More & more. Thus, this was the song where he realized that it was music making him crazy, but music is what he wanted to do. That is why this song brings me to tears every time. It's reminiscent of someone gasping for air, after they filled the room with the poison they love so dearly. I know the feeling
Not really: Syd's sister says that Barrett was more in love with being an artist rather than a musician all his life, he was really into painting more than into songwriting... of course, he really liked music but he always saw his guitar and songs as a Pollock painting of sorts. But "Dark Globe" is indeed a cry for help or a question about Syd's own existence. Together with "Jugband Blues" it defines Syd's state of mind at the time... czcams.com/video/RXkqayAc6Ew/video.html (edit: wow, OP was from 7 years ago lol)
@@redacted2275 I think painting and other visual arts were easier and more comforting than music for Barrett, possibly because they were stationary, while music is always moving in time and requires some structure in relation to conventional measures of time. We can observe from the last decades of his life that he gave up trying to communicate with the outside world with words, preferring to be alone and to create images, mostly for himself. I don't know if that's a tragedy or not. Who knows what degree of happiness or satisfaction with life he had in later years? He wouldn't tell anyone. He gave up on us, even if we didn't give up on him.
some say syd was insane, a mad cap, I say he was one of the few who had a grasp of the joys of life. This music is mental, intuitive, and so real to me. perfectly imperfect like life is.
Trying to learn this song on guitar. The chords are simple, but the phrasing is difficult as hell. I'm realizing how Syd's genius in songwriting worked... There are emphases in his vocals that are not "signaled" by any emphasis in the guitar line. Most music, in my limited experience, "cues" changes in the other instruments, especially vocals... But with Syd, it's almost like playing two different songs at the same time in some spots. Then in other spots the changes are right with the words/beat, like you'd expect. And I've not even mentioned the strumming pattern and chord changes at unexpected points in the vocal line. All of this creates an "emotional" effect. I think maybe it's how really good songs are able to hit the listener emotionally, while only using the same notes and chords as every other song. It's going to take a lot of practice for such a "simple" song.
It's because of the way he writes songs. According to Rick Write, he writes all the lyrics first and then chooses the rhythms for the lyrics. Then the notes and finally the chords. Since the rhythm comes first, it's often difficult to match the chords up and even put everything in a time signature
HuffinMuffin Interesting. I guess that makes sense. If he wrote the lyrics first... he could build an unusual musical structure around them that probably wouldn't arise out of just playing with chords and rhythms. I'll have to try writing on guitar that way. But just knowing part of Syd's process won't give me the same kind of poignant phrasing as him, however. He's not called a genius by those-in-the-know for nothing!
But when he was hitting his girlfriend... And don't get me wrong, I love the man, but he had his dark sides of the moonies. He needed help, he was suffering, he was sensible, but might have been "dangerous" sometimes. And although I never hit any woman, I also know that I have dark side and can be dangerous. @funkmasterjee They did, stop saying things like that. For example they helped him release this album, without their help we wouldn't listen to this masterpiece today.
@funkmasterjee Time to dispel this stupid story. Gilmour, Waters, Wright and Mason helped him all the way - they made sure he got his royalties from songs and even helped him on both solo albums. Moreover, Syds story is not as remotely tragic as it is presented in the media. Yes, he was a genius and yes, he had serious issues with drug abuse and mental illness, but he managed to (pretty much) recover. He lived happily, peacefully and normally for the rest 25 years of his life. He wanted to be left alone with his cycling tours, his walks, his garden and his art (paintings) and he got exactly what he wanted. By all accounts, he died a happy man. Btw, when he died, he had 2 million $ on his bank account - all that coming from Gilmour and Waters taking care he never got cheated out of his royalties.
@@andrasdura47 Happy is not the word I'd use. Shaved head and eyebrows. Wore dirty and scruffy clothes, dirty white tank tops with ripped, loose old jeans. Look at pictures taken by paparazzi in 2006, months before his death, while opening the door to a stranger. He looks confused, lost. There's not a single picture of Roger [Syd's real name] after his musical career, where he looks content. None. Neighbors usually talk about how he was a hermit, strange old man. I seriously don't think he died happy.
This is one of the saddest songs in the world. At the time it was written, Syd was losing his mind. But he was on the cusp, so he was slightly aware of this. The more he did music, the more he lost his mind (the LSD didn't help). This song, to me, is the crying out of a person who is realizing the very thing they love the most is the thing that's driving them mad. And it breaks my heart. Shortly after this album, he simply went further over the edge into insanity. What's worse is that far later, when Pink Floyd was recording Wish You Were Here (about Syd), Syd showed up. Ready to get back into music again, only to further demonstrate his mental illness... bringing the band to tears for being reunited w/a person they loved so much only to have him disappear before their eyes into insanity. I don't know why, but I have a HUGE emotional affinity for those who supposedly have gone "insane."
Syd is a unique individual and there was no one who was more original than Syd. No one can argue that Syd lost touch with reality, but whether that makes him insane or crazy, is debatable. RIP Syd!

I don't rely only on his albums: I've read a number of biographies on Syd Barrett, and found that he was a kind and sensitive person who passed through a tough time in his life, as many do. And this is how he's always been described by people who knew him well, like his sister. If I were a "type to believe a sly liar", I'd totally agree with you.
Holy fuckin shit sounds like it belongs in the wall in between one of my turns and don't leave me know... You know good and damn Rogers listened to this a lot
I just noticed that Roger's singing is very similar to how Syd is singing in this! It's almost like Roger sings that way because he was influenced by Syd's genius, and does it as a tribute to him...
I believe that this may have been one of his final cries for help pulling out of his insanity. It's a shame no one helped him. He was such a wonderful person, who really knew how to express his feelings through music. Rest in peace, you beauty.
I was coming down here to look for this comment. I knew he sung like that for a reason and I loved it but I never knew why, and that makes it even more tragic
“Dark Globe” (1970) shows Syd Barrett’s awareness of his own psychological state. He was a founding member of Pink Floyd, but mental illness led him to a reclusive life. The take of this tune on the LP “The Madcap Laughs” (1970) was played out of time by Barrett, who skipped or added beats at will. There is another version of the song on the album “Opel,” (1988), a compilation of Barrett out-takes, also known as “Wouldn’t You Miss Me?”… Both Roger Waters and David Gilmour took time off from their work as “Pinkers” (for want of a better term) to help produce their former bandmate’s record. 💜🎵💜 May you rest in peace, Roger Keith “Syd” Barrett (1946 - 2006)…🌹

Happiness is also a choice. Altough ironically, a really hard one. Dont try and try and try to be happy..Be happy , simply. but never stop trying to reach a better place. Because you can, and will find what you were searching for, in a way or another..But also dont forget to enjoy the ride in the present. This is my point. To everyone that read this ; i wish you peace and happiness
I feel the same way about “Bennie and the Jets” by Elton John but I love that song :(
I love Syd Barrett and I love Ampere

Mad. ,. Genius,. He. Touches. The. Souls. Insane. And. Same. Alike
This song is so heart-wrenching...really sad.
[10 April 2021] Oh, lots of people missed you, Syd. They still do. R.I.P.
Lmao April 10 is my bday
so much emotions expressed in the way he hits the strings
Syd was a genius
r.i.p legend
Yes we miss you Syd.
Syd: wouldn't you miss me at all?......
Post Syd, Pink Floyd song lyrics: All day long. ...
Chris Cornell covered this song, a testament to the genius of Syd.
One of my favourite songs of all time, just so much emotion in syd's voice. It's beautiful.
Syd is a unique individual and there was no one who was more original than Syd.
No one can argue that Syd lost touch with reality, but whether that makes him insane or crazy, is debatable. RIP Syd!
The chord at 0:42 is absolutely brutal. Love it. You can see how this inspired Roger Waters' vocal performance on later albums.
There's a lot of pain behind this song. It hurts to hear it frankly.
When you make songs it liberates your pain, we are also liberating Syd's pain through listening.
@satan Yeah, its the band's fault that he refused to perform at shows. They honestly didn't have any real choice at that point. The show must go on.
its art.
it's as real as it gets. love you syd.
I love so much syd
Holy fuckin shit sounds like it belongs in the wall in between one of my turns and don't leave me know... You know good and damn Rogers listened to this a lot
I got hooked by this song on the first listening. GREAT ONE!
Syd was a genius. I absolutely love this album ❤️ i tattooed my brain all the way
I adore this song but it makes me sad, the lyrics, the way he sing it..don't know..so sad :(
Barrett was a genius writer! Miss you, Syd; wish you were here.
I just noticed that Roger's singing is very similar to how Syd is singing in this! It's almost like Roger sings that way because he was influenced by Syd's genius, and does it as a tribute to him...
The Wall in 2 minutes.
that gorgeous british accent
I like american accent better.
thanks for keeping us informed...
lol
I know, right?!
chispita 72 Nah British is better
Absolute masterpiece
Just love this.. this album is deep in my heart somewhere.. buried there
"My head kissed the ground, I was half the way down." 6 feet under. :(
Yes Syd, we all miss you
my favourite syd song. Beautiful.
Such a good song.
Why is insanity so god damn beautiful
Because it's a mirror, deep as ocean.
I believe that this may have been one of his final cries for help pulling out of his insanity. It's a shame no one helped him. He was such a wonderful person, who really knew how to express his feelings through music. Rest in peace, you beauty.
This song tears my heart into thousands of pieces.
"brandish her wand with a feathery tongue"
Ive allways heard "brandish the one with the feathery tongue" i bet neither of us are right lol
This surely inspired Roger Waters for The Wall, I mean the way he sings.
I was coming down here to look for this comment. I knew he sung like that for a reason and I loved it but I never knew why, and that makes it even more tragic
Best song on mental illness. Michael Stipe has an amazing cover
Syd was unique ❤
“Dark Globe” (1970) shows Syd Barrett’s awareness of his own psychological state. He was a founding member of Pink Floyd, but mental illness led him to a reclusive life.
The take of this tune on the LP “The Madcap Laughs” (1970) was played out of time by Barrett, who skipped or added beats at will. There is another version of the song on the album “Opel,” (1988), a compilation of Barrett out-takes, also known as “Wouldn’t You Miss Me?”…
Both Roger Waters and David Gilmour took time off from their work as “Pinkers” (for want of a better term) to help produce their former bandmate’s record. 💜🎵💜
May you rest in peace, Roger Keith “Syd” Barrett (1946 - 2006)…🌹
maestro.
Syd Barrett, John Lennon, Paul McCartney y George Harrison son mis maestros.Saludos!
This song captures so much of his emotions. Brings tears to my eyes almost every time. RIP Syd.
Unique person, unique talent. There will never be someone like syd barrett.
*Lyrics*
Oh where are you now
Pussy willow that smiled on this leaf?
When I was alone you promised the stone from your heart
My head kissed the ground
I was half the way down, treading the sand
Please, please, lift a hand
I'm only a person whose armbands beat
On his hands, hang tall
Won't you miss me?
Wouldn't you miss me at all?
The poppy birds way
Swing twigs coffee brands around
Brandish her wand with a feathery tongue
My head kissed the ground
I was half the way down, treading the sand
Please, please, please lift the hand
I'm only a person with Eskimo chain
I tattooed my brain all the way
Won't you miss me?
Wouldn't you miss me at all?
That's the picture of the reprinted cover ,I have the original. What an album, what a tune....
This track is the spirit behind The Wall. It reminds me to "Don't leave me now"
This version breaks my heart
