They never explain it in the show but Mustang’s gloves are special made to create a spark so that’s why he can’t just get a tattoo of his flame circle on his hand. Remember when he killed Lust he did carve the circle in his hand, but he still needed Havock’s lighter to create a spark.
I think Lust calls them "ignition gloves", right? But yeah, the concrete details weren't carried over from the manga unfortunately
I think someone may have mentioned something about it offhand, but you’re definitely right that it was glossed over in the anime.
They did explain it in the 2003 anime during a duel between Ed and Mustang, but people never want to give it a chance 😭
They explained in episode 1 or 2, when he confronted the water Alchemist

a tattoo actually wouldve helped Mustang in this situation, cause they broke his transmutation circle- like he also needs to gloves' material to make a spark, but rn the circle is the issue
considering Hawkeye's trauma regarding the flame alchemy tattoo on her back tho, I doubt he'd feel comfortable doing that
Ah forgot they never specifically mention it but he needs the gloves for the actual ignition or spark for his flame alchemy

Regarding Mustang, it's not just the circle on his glove, he also needs to create a spark...which the gloves do when he snaps his finger. That's why in his introduction he couldn't fight in the rain because the gloves were wet. He's pretty much a glass canon, yes his alchemy is strong but it's really easy to disarm his alchemy in many ways. Disrupt the glove, the circle, get him wet or if you're as fast as these makeshift Fuhrers are then you can get in close before he can even use it. People think it's strong because it's flashy but it's the least versatile compared to others.
