- As winter sets in, the three farm dwellers must look further afield to earn money. Peter and Alex fish for crabs while Ruth hires herself out for domestic work. Ruth rides a bicycle and tries period cleaning techniques, including early vacuum cleaners. They separate growing calves from their mothers. Peter finds out how leather is made. They celebrate Christmas modestly, as poor farmers might have, and listen to a Methodist Christmas message.

Ruth cackling as she flies past a doorway on a bicycle...you have no idea how much I needed that... Remember joy? Happiness? Yea, me neither... But Ruth reminded me...
I feel this joy every time I see new seedlings in my garden. I get giddy. Drives my kids nuts, if you go by their attitudes, but they love me. They help plant seeds with me. Teenagers.
Ruth does find the joy in her day to day.
She always reminded me of the wicked witch of the west & cackling on that bike did it.
I desperately want Ruth’s job!!
That is why I enjoy watching her. She is a joy to watch. :)
Watching these shows has helped me appreciate the easy living we have in modern times but still theres a part of me that longs for the simplicity of those days. Good hard work and the outdoors, nothing quite like it. Not one cell phone in sight
Ruth is just livin her best life all during this series, isn’t she?
She’s just vibing.
Ruth is like your favorite Aunt who always had something fun to do, make or cook, when you came to visit. I was lucky to grow up with a few Ruth's and some Peter's and Alex's.
I LOVE her enthusiasm!
She's let's me believe they're really back in time. We love Ruth
I totally admire her!!
Haha Ruth is delightful. The way she was excitedly laughing when she got on the bicycle. She's such a joyful person. 😊
Ngl, I think if I saw Ruth like that on a bike back in the day.... I’d probably think she’s a witch 😂😂
She's one of a kind : )

Yes, however if was was able to live somewhere that gorgeous I’d be happy too. City life sucks
The random folks they get for these shows are just as great as the hosts. You can take one quick glance at Bill and know his family's had saltwater in their veins for generations. He's dripping with authenticity. Same with the basket maker and the butcher. And that church scene at the end. Ngl it was kinda touching to see that one guy so happy to have his childhood chapel being used again to do an old timey Christmas service. And all that's just the stuff from this one episode! Every episode of all these farm series is full of stuff like this!
When they made a jab at Bills boat the subtle, polite fury on his face had me cracking me up. He looked so like "Bitch did you just shit-talk my dingy?"
It's so cute how Ruth gets so excited! Like a little kid in a playground😂 Her passion and energy makes it all more interesting and fun
As a true historian Ruth is very knowledgeable about the past ages of British life and prefers tor farm changes over the years.
I giggle right along with her, as I would be giddy in that position...
She is a national treasure and deserves all our love and protection.
In the last episode she was making gin and said "O, I'm bein' bad. A bad girl. Don't tell the neighbors."
I actually started off not liking her but now I love her she really inhabits the time she’s in and loves every moment.
If you were making a movie and you needed an authentic-looking old fisherman, you'd just see Bill and say, "Yep, exactly."
There’s definitely salt water in that man’s veins. He looks like he could harpoon a whale.
I absolutely love him.
Same here. Never did I expect to see the most in-place ''character'' in my life - this person definitely takes the prize for it!
He didn't seem to appreciate the fellas laughing at his dingy when they asked him when was the last time he did repairs to it!
@@Cook-hb2nf I just put this exact same comment just now. I thought it was just me who noticed. First British person I see without some sense of humour.
Ruth makes learning about all this really fun, and exciting. I love her energy!!
I don’t watch their videos unless she is there. She is amazing
Vieja The old woman LOL
I totally agree! She makes me want to go hang out with her for a day and just explore the past!
I wish Ruth was my mom she seems so kind 🥺
I'm seriously wondering if that really was the first time she's seen an electric light.
Miss Ruth is the spitting image of my Late Wife. Got kind of misty seeing her set up for Xmas. My wife used to do the same.
Roger Auger Ruth has one of those faces that looks so familiar I have an Cousin who looks like her but like 16 and with bright red hair.
Sorry for you loss
I hope watching this brings you some comfort. Losing someone so close is never easy. But the pain does get less intense.
You're so depressing
@@Shine-kg9vk You know what's more depressing? Knowing such unsympathetic people such as yourself exist. This man lost someone and is grieving. Worst pain there is... If you don't understand that then count yourself fortunate but when you do experience it, remember you get what you give out.
Dude seemed really offended when they talked about his water logged boat. lol
can't blame him
@@Name-yv2zq why? seemed like a bit of a concern to average people. lol
@@jack5001ful they did laugh but it was in good spirits. I bet he's rather proud of his boat.

Had to laugh at the exchange. Dude probably thought, "I'm helping you wankers."
What amazes me more that these machines were once WIDELY used everywhere, is that they are STILL functional and being kept running after more than a century later.
Nowadays we can't even go 5 years with something without it ''withering'' away and having to either see to hopelessly pricy repairs or simply buy something new. I think if we had such machines that lasted longer, people would have a greater appreciation for the items they keep, generally would contribute to less junk being manufactured in such large quantities. But of course the corporations wouldn't want to be left without your money - so it's really sad to where we've come with our consumption.
I agree, planned obsolescence is infuriating
Exactly, ive got a 50 year old fridge, new lasts 10 if youre lucky...
Planned obsolescence his a big money maker for corporations. I really would like something that can last a fucking long time.
Items before are built to last. It's about the quality, now it's all about capitalism and brand names. They're made to make sure we're buying again in a couple years or so.
If you have access to bbc sounds, def check out the programme Dare to Repair.
You know it's funny because Ruth really grew on me. Her enthusiasm is endearing and not forced. I think she's my absolute favorite!!
I love Ruth to death, but Peter is my underrated #2! He’s always down to do some hard work and yet he can still be so goofy and sweet.
ruth makes me smiles she gets so excited and as much as i love alex, peter is my favorite for the same reasons as you
I think you’ll find there’s a small but passionate history-loving group of women (and not a few men) who rate Peter very, very highly! ☺️
@@tinastagg6258 most. definitely. 😉 though I’ve got to say, Alex is a cutie, too. They both look sooooo handsome in the Edwardian period. _swoons_

The look on the poor man's face as they're commenting 😂
That poor fisherman looked like he was about to cry. They should have apologized. I'm surprised he let them on the boat.

I'm a proud Atheist, but i think the chapel service is a nice time for communities to get together and have socials and whatever get together from the loneliness from constant hard labor.
Who cares....
Atheists claim to be proud until faced with death lol
Atheists of not believe in loneliness....the believes of atheists is the believe in nothingness
@@monicapyle You don't know Atheists, nor do i think you're one. Atheists don't believe in heaven or hell, you just finish out, without worries. Easy. You've been brainwashed in religion too much that you're afraid of death and some "afterlife" judgement
@@Js-to3jl So what makes you think Christians never suffer loneliness?
These three presenters each bring something unique to the mix, making it even better. Often with three presenters, they're just shades of each other but here each one shines as individuals because of their different expertise and characters. Together they elevate something already amazing into something wonderful. I never get tired rewatching their history documentaries.
so funny that back than the brisket was the cheapest shit ever and now its pretty expensive. funny how that changed. same with lobsters, oysters, butter ect
I absolutely LOVE the part about tanning the leather! Goes to show just how many people and jobs are influenced by just one cow, and the full line of industries it helps along the way!
I would think they would.
1:39 I can't stop laughing at Ruth going by on that bicycle cackling. 🤣
Ruth's laughter is infectious, even when I don't understand why she's laughing. Lol! I love all 3 of them so much.
Great stuff! My one minor complaint is that the music is far too loud compared to the speaker, it drowns out his narration. Otherwise this is a joy to watch, as usual!

Thank you so much for uploading all of these...they are all so much fun, and really interesting.
An added bonus, I think, is that I can already tell I will enjoy re-watching them, simply because they aren't overly-scripted or emotion driven.
That's true!! I love it 😀.
I love that Ruth reads and enjoys the greeting cards while she is polishing. So relatable! I would have found my curiosity about the family irresistible too!
The fisherman was not amused at Alex and Peter joking about his boat. "When's the last time you did a little refurb on it?" Hahaha his face was so confused. Alex and Peter are so silly together.

Bill, the fisherman, caught an attitude with Alex and Peter throwing shade at his "dinghy."
Seeing that exchange made me laugh longer than I should have!

From chemist to cleaning. I love my history, thank you.
Poor ruth has put in all this work and saving her money for them while the boys eat and drink away their profits

yeah... I, too, feel like she's the main attraction of this show. Alex comes in second, while Peter... I think that, deep inside, Peter hates that he's been dragged into this and he'd much rather be in a pub right now, drinking his brains out. He does have the face of a drunk :)

They did Ruth dirty, cooking the steak the one night she was out. 😂😂
She can just cheat them out of some of her best preservatives, jams, and jellies. Maybe keep some extra gin for herself 😉
Yeah, I was thinking dang, Ruth's going out for hours to work to make ends meet, likely still doing all the housework around her outside work time, and they have that kind of meal without her. Hope they saved her some, but expect they would have shown it if so. Kinda disappointed in Peter for just going eh, she's not here to monitor, so let's have a splurge.

Just love Ruth's energy and enjoyment exploring this . Her delightful cackle is so lively. Love this series, my great ancestors were either farmers or servants. Funny enough one was a ladies maid in central London but then was quickly moved to a country manor where there was an increase to the household of two- her and her newborn. Considering that that would usually result in instant dismissal , one wonders who was the father? Lol.
How has the sound mixing gotten even WORSE than the previous episodes???
Ruth and her husband to this day still practice some of the things from these videos. It's a way of life for them. I'm starting an herb area this year based on some of the things I've picked up watching them.
Ruth on that bike is adorable , the piano music at the start reminded me of a 80s horror movie sound track lol
I love seeing the joy and happiness this lady has
I took a shot every time Ruth raised her eyebrows; I'm schnockered
Hey turn the music up, I almost heard the narrator!
40:23 Not very smart to insult a man's boat just before you go out to sea where there are no witnesses and accidents easily happen. (On top of the fact that it was just damned rude.)
49:30 Perhaps they've redeemed themselves.
Just love Ruth. Her excitement of things past. Just love ABSOLUTE HISTORY.

Ruth is so happy. Love her
Thomas Jefferson had "in house" toilets, unheard of in his time. He'd designed a system for each relief room, clay lined pipes leading from just above the river -- a source of clean air, and from the relief room another pipe pulling the air out of the house,. I don't remember how he managed to keep the air moving, but it worked.
One side effect was that even in the hottest summer days the plantation house remained cool from all that river air.
Great example but Roman's had indoor plumbing very primitive but they had it ( their toilet paper was disgusting.....a rag /sponge on a stick used by multiple ppl yew!!!) There has been spots of running h20/ toilets through out history when they were present the health of the household/community went up
It is just amazing that if I heard right and this is set around 1906 that this is the world just 16 years before my great grandmither was born who is currently in the room underneath mine and whit whom I just had christmas. He told of washing clothes with ash, walking three houses ove in the village to the well to get water, having pigs over summer and slughtering them before winter as keeping them would be to expensive. By watching this series and the ones before that I realized not much has changed in the way of life I experience through her experience daily back to almost the iron age in simple living land folk. Housing changed and available materials increased in number but most of the techniques stayed almost the same! Just puts history into a closer timeframe!
I wanna excuse my spelling mistakes as it is late at night and I unfortunately have bad eyesight
Bicycles still give poor people a chance to earn a living.
@Linda Tisue : The bicycles with a engine are my favorite!
This video's music to narration volume isn't as bad as other ones but it's still an issue. Please fix this because the content is so amazing it's just a shame.....also.... viewers, do not listen with head phones 😂 or you'll have to turn the volume up and down all the time.
Thanks for typing that out so I didn't have to! I'm a bit hard of hearing, so "background" music can sometimes be a problem, but with some of these videos it's especially bad when the narrator speaks. Shame really because I love the series and some of the most important information is covered up by the music!
If you watch Brad Colett’s post of the same series the sound is much better. I don’t know why absolute history got it so wrong
I am listening with headphones and it sounds like the volume on the narrator and the soundtrack need to be swapped.
Agreed
I thought it was just me, LOL! Awful editing.

2 Ruth freaking out about the running water and iceboxes and molds.
3 The realisation of dealing with machines.
Too cute for words!
Over here in "the states", the poor man's Christmas Dinner she made is called Pot Roast. One thing i've always wanted to try is a dish the Brits call steak pie. If anyone from the UK reads this comment, I would appreciate it if you could comment with the recipe for it. It sounds so good. Thanks.
I would reccomend googling a BBC Steak Pie recipe. It's very similar to a chicken pot pie like in the US only with pastry at all sides (hot water crust pastry) and a filling of cubed beef and gravy.
@@justlaurenslife4736 That sounds almost like my Mother's meat pie. She would cut up a beef roast and put onions, carrots and and cubed potatoes in a pie crust (home made of course). She didn't put gravy in the pie though. She made that separate and we would pour it over the pie. She made it with top and bottom crust. God i miss it!!!
Curious as a Brit is our heritage and history different to yours? In the states do you get programmes like this, showing the history of the country? And do you think it's interesting to watch how us English folk used to do it? Xxxxx

Internet comments = overblown drama (and yea the sound is off but totally hearable)
The background music is atrocious and that's fact. Edwardian Farm episodes I've seen in the past didn't have all that over bearing music. It's not necessary to blast it so loud and still do the job to pass youtube copyright issues.
@@nunyabuisness7552 it's not for copyright, youtube messes the sound up, windows could be messing the sound up. Tons of reasons. CZcams videos are compressed so that adds to the complexity. One thing I can guarantee is it's not the sound persons fault. These were nationally aired standards exist.
Such a delightful series. So pleased to have discovered this.
I was at a farm in Rhode Island with a bunch of Red Devons. They had a calf on a lead so people could pet it and the girl that was holding it had to go do something.
