YES proved that they can crunch with the heaviest of them on this track. And yet, they bring such subtlety to that beautiful bridge. The middle section showcased every member simultaneously. The only band that can pull off that miracle as a five piece!!

Great song by my favorite group! The secret to listening to Yes regularly is to listen to each song at least three times. The patterns bloom and the songs get even better with each listen. One of Yes' best songs is "Starship Trooper" from this same musical era, but you should react to the incredible live version from later in their career, with great audio and visual. This song isn’t the easiest to follow, I’ll admit although I love the bass. However, YES was the very first concert I ever went to in the very early 80’s and they’ll always hold a special place in my heart for that, their INCREDIBLE talent, and their old stuff that I love so much.
Oh- and (perhaps) one of the most important things- my favorite bassist Geddy Lee from my FAVORITE BAND Rush looks up to Yes’s bassist as a sort-of mentor when young.

"Were we ever warmer on that day? It seemed from all of eterniteee yeah!!

Yes are an English progressive rock band formed in London in 1968. The band has undergone numerous line-up changes throughout its history, up to nineteen musicians have been full-time members. They have had a lot of great songs such as "Roundabout", "Owner Of A Lonely Heart", "Going For The One", "Masquerade", "Yours Is No Disgrace", "Heart Of The Sunrise", "The Gates Of Delirium", "And You & I", "Starship Trooper", "Close To The Edge", "I've Seen All Good People" etc.

    Hi Guys
The album Yessongs from 1973 is a good example of the group live from gigs in1972. Close to the Edge , Roundabout are good examples of the tightness of the band as Gregory Linton commented.
Also, with the technical limitations of 70s their musicianship still shines through.. With Yes you have to be in the mood and spend the time completely focused as you guys understand

Yes has always amazed me because they are so so intricate, detailed and creative. They are tight. It takes a lot of talent to be that good! Steve Howe....incredible guitarist!! Quick story...From the Yes album in 1971...there's a song on there called "The Clap" acoustic guitar only. Sooooo complicated and so good! My brother back then said....I'm going to go in my room and I'm not coming out until I can play that song. I was thinking....I'll never see him again....Needness to say.....later he emerged....defeated. Thanks for this reaction!! 😀

Classic era Yes. When all four of the musicians threw the kitchen sink into most of their songs without stepping on each other's toes. Their music then could never be accused of being dull. It always got on with it.....even when they frequently went off on one. And Bruford's drumming here....THAT is what Tool's Danny Carey became....with bells on.

Thanks George and Patrick for such a wonderful reaction to Yes one of the few true pioneers of Prog Rock. When writing music to produce studio albums they used sheet music every time this was unique back in the early 70s and every member was self taught except Rick Wakeman he had classical keyboard training from the age of 8yrs and secured a place at Musical College with the intention of becoming a Classical concert pianist by the age of 20 he dropped out of college to become a session musician, then became known as One Take Wakeman. He was then recruited by David Bowie to play on the Album Space Oddity (released '69) to play the Mellotron that had just been invented and no other musicians could be found who knew how to play this instrument💥 All the 70s members of Yes were Genius, and so, so Pioneering. I saw this band 4 times, twice in the 70s and again, 2003/ 04, blew me away every time, thank you so much for your enthusiastic reaction to one of my 6 favourite pioneering bands.❤💫

It depends on what kinds of music you were exposed to when you were young. We all Carry our conditioning from our childhoods throughout our lives. I was listening to Gentle Giant, ELP and Yes in my grade school years thanks to my older brothers so I developed an ear for more complex music. By the time I got to junior high and high school I didn't really connect with the commercial music of the day: metal, new wave, punk. I was definitely the outcast among my peers (and gratefully so). So it's a bit of a reversal of your experience with music.

Southside of the Sky is epic and should always be paired with the preceding We Have Heaven. It’s a thing with us fans. Jon wrote this song about a mountain climbing expedition that ran into trouble. I have seen them play this live at least a couple of times. Always awesome. You are right about Yes needing… (and deserving) a proper listen. Studying the lyrics and listening in various states of consciousness will expand your appreciation. I appreciate your comment on the mix and needing stronger focus on vocals. Maybe Steven Wilson could remix the Yes catalog? If you need Live… check out Yesshows and whatever else people recommend. Songs of Tsongas came a lot of years later but they always sounded good. I remember being in junior high school, like 8th grade and hearing this album. The first time I heard it I was hooked. I've listened to this a bunch of times in my life and it still kicks ass! Back in the day George, I did listen to Yes nearly every day. All my friends had this album and this song was even on the radio a lot. But then we were into complex progressive rock so we were used to music like this. Well not like this exactly, but this caliber of playing. As for live, I don't know what to tell you. I saw Yes in Oakland California in 1975 and they put on a stupendous concert. Didn't have Rick Wakeman, I was disappointed in that, but Patrick Moraz was pretty good. I have watched several Yes live videos on CZcams from the 70s and I really didn't like any of them. But there's a pretty good one of Close To the Edge in 1972, but it's kinda hard to see because the lighting is psychedelic and the video occasionally has these periods of bizarre imagery instead of the band, but they are playing Close To the Edge pretty damn well czcams.com/video/I83Tf7W08po/video.html.

From more recent interviews, Jon seems to view Awaken as their best. Can't argue. Rick says Awaken and CttE show best what Yes was about. He said something like ~They began when the inspiration came, and ended when it was gone.~ He may have had a little snark there about Tales.

I´m glad you liked this song guys!
I´m still affected and disapointed that you didn´t enjoy Gates of Delirium. For me is an absolute masterpiece that requires a few listens indeed. One of tthose listens will be a musical revelation and you will love every single layer, instrument and nuance of this magical composition.
In fact, the symphonic live version of Gates of Delirium with the European Festival Orchestra in 2001 is a great example of how YES can play with great precision such a complex song.
The 3-parts videos are in CZcams. You´re welcome ;)

Guys, Yes live were fantastic, remember they are all perfectionists. Sure the studio albums were crisp and pure. But the live album set called Yessong (1973) was recorded with the classic Yes line-up at their amazing best just after the release of Close to the Edge. The live versions of all their songs are amazing, they also extend and push songs to new heights. Sure the recording quality is not perfect like the studio versions but this more than made up for by the energy, the adaption and extras they put into the songs. So they did play all their songs live and knew how to knock it out of the park. However, you should listen to the studio versions first then the live material. That you will grasp the level of amazing musicianship this band had. Not only played live, but played perfectly, better, with energy, heart and soul. South Side of the sky is my favorite from the great Fragile album and for me is an indicator of the direction Yes took over the next few albums. For a first listen Yes is complex with so many layers and transitions. But after each listen it become more and more comfortable. Then the music become almost transcendental. For me after 50 years this music become part of me, like a good old friend and you can listen without any effort at all. Then we watch new people like you entering the Yes world of music in wonder and awe trying to make sense of it, just like we did in the 70's. Yes music is life changing and redefines what music can do. Great reaction guys.

My favorite Yes song. Steve Howe’s guitar is just phenomenal. Sure….Chris’ bass lays an excellent line but this song is Steve Howe’s. And of course Wakeman’s piano gives us the stark singular feel of a cold mountain. And the vocals. This and Siberian Khatru. Think of the looong odds of these virtuosos coming together in one band. BTW…not at all like Steely Dan.

I don't know if they have a live version of the song I'm about to suggest, but you should really check it out, it's called "Leave It", there are 2 versions of it, one is totally acapella, and the other is with their instruments, both of them are fantastic! Thanks for this reaction video!

The "a capella" version of Leave It is actually the vocal tracks lifted from the full recording sans instruments. But it sounds incredible that way.

They could be absolutely astonishing live, but I think any initial experiences you check out should involve the original band...the 'Tube has many such selections, from early 70's tv appearances to symphonic productions in later years. Most of it will have Alan White on drums and much will have Rick Wakeman on keyboards, and quite a lot of it is fantastic, but don't pass up decent opportunities to see Bill Buford and my personal favorite Patrick Moraz after you do. (Do your research or get some good advice for live video selections!) :)
Comment on prog-rock: Ever since the Velvets there has been an overt experimental avenue available to rock music, and of course the Beatles greatly expanded the popularity of extra-curricular sounds in rock (including some very retro, non-rock and roll sounding music as well, from village band to symphonic orchestra ). They really helped popularize how 'classical' music, something most Europeans were very engrained, if not trained in, was an element that could be added to the American and European folk and pop they already knew to make their music more...original, local, interesting? (And, future bonus-points: even though they hadn't learned to care yet, it was not an African rip-off). Many bands experimented with the elements at hand, with various degrees of success and satisfaction, Yes experiencing plenty of both. Although this particular song seems more obviously stitched than others of theirs, as you know, when they get it right, the gods of music listen in with a smile.

Once you get familiar with their music it isn't as difficult to follow. It's still amazing and reveals something new but you're prepared. For me it's the most enduring progressive music that came out of the 70's.

George & Patrick - I’m giving you a 🎁 here to recover from this overwhelming experience you had with this song. It’s 1 song that’s an actual “SONG” that you can follow with a beat and lyrics (not too long etc) that you will probably really DIG from them that will sort-of 💋 and make up for what they just put you through. Then, I’ll suggest 2 back to back albums of theirs where you should ALSO find a group of songs that you’ll actually find more appealing- almost sing-a-long song tunes that you remember. None of this is live and it’s all older YES.. late 70’s- early 80’s. It’s for your personal consumption.I love you guys very much😘
