We’re no TMZ analysts but it’s hard to ignore the presence of live-action celebrities in US animated films. And while they’re popular, a lot of people are understandably getting fed-up with the trend, especially when it looks like they prioritize name power over creating interesting characters through voice acting. But does celebrity voiceover HAVE to be like this? Most famous actors are famous with good reason, right? If celebrities are going to stick around in animation anyway, how would we want them to be involved?
This is more of a casual video than normal looking back through our experiences with celebrity voice acting, from our childhood to whatever the heck the Mario movie will be. Apologies that we’re not as specific with the history of things in this video, but we still try looking at things from a few different angles to keep things interesting.

    UPDATES AND CORRECTIONS:
17:42 Please disregard the Peter Dinklage/Destiny footage shown here. It was based off a rumor I'd heard years ago that Dinklage was replaced in Destiny because the devs didn't like his acting. Turns out it was probably to do with scheduling and whatnot (www.polygon.com/2015/8/11/9129947/why-is-destiny-replacing-peter-dinklage-nolan-north-bungie). We just told our editor Nies to stick that footage in on that line, but it was stupid of us to do that based on a years-old memory without even doublechecking Dinklage's performance itself (which is fine even if it's a very different personality to Nolan's), sorry about that.
Regardless, we still think it's possible to tell these celebrities have the fundamentals of acting when they do voiceover, it's just that either the performances themselves or the material they're working with aren't very interesting. Also probably worth noting that even when they're new to voiceover, they're still working with pro audio crews who guide them. -Abhi

Related to the topic at hand, James Gunn admitted on twitter that he got in a fight with a Marvel exec over Bradley Cooper as Rocket. I feel voice acting should be based on who they feel is most fit for a role. How well-known they are and/or how much they want a specific actor(s) for said role should be irrelevant.

  • @ISBuckley8
    @ISBuckley8 Před 2 lety +23

Here's how I feel about celebrity voices: If they fit the role, go for it. Pratt as Emmett was great since at the time, Chris Pratt was best known for being the laid-back, lazy but really likable guy on Parks and Rec. He wasn't a huge star at the time so he felt relatable in that role.
I also find it respectable when a celebrity takes a voice role so they can spend more time with their families or work on a project their children can watch. A lot of really great actors transition to voice acting roles more prominently but with a few exceptions, many of them work really well in it. Mark Hamill is probably the best example of this, but others that I think that fit this roles really well include Alan Tudyk, J.K. Simmons, Sean Astin and Nicole Sullivan just to name a few.
But studios really should know what should work and not work. Pixar I'd argue is best at using celebrities since a lot of times they go with who's best for the role, even if it's not a huge star (like Patton Oswalt as Remy, Craig T. Nelson as Mr. Incredible or Albert Brooks as Marlin. All of these actors are known, but none of them are "A-listers" exactly). A lot of times their main roles are played by the crew if it fits (Edna Mode, Linguini and Dug for example were all voiced by people on the crew instead of big actors), so they manage what they have well. That's why it gets disappointing when they just cast someone because they're famous (Holland and Pratt in Onward for example)
Dreamworks and Illumination are probably the most blatant with their casting. Granted, a lot of times it works, but other times it feels that they just casted someone in the role because they're popular and not because they're the right fit for the role
I personally don't think celebrities should get $5 Million for a voice role unless they REALLY earn it (Robin Williams as the Genie for example totally earned every penny of his paycheck) but that's just a personal preference, mostly because professional voice actors usually have to work a lot more in this field and don't make anything near this amount of money
Kevin Hart is always just Kevin Hart. But studios always cast him in roles that really should be other actors simply because he has a funny voice. It seems that he and Pratt are the two ones that are casted the most
Sorry about the rant by the way

Its why I watched the Greatest Showman, because I know she can do it. But as a voice actor, Im not sure. Similar to Encanto. The name LMM holds a certain connotation for me. Their previous experience matches job description. Thus, I watch it. Sometimes I dont mind if the actor's voice is very iconic (ie John Mellany is a superior casting decision in Spiderverse). I don't mind celebrities be name listed in an animated movie and part of the reason for the usage of celebrities over regular voice actors for animated films is to advertise the movie because of that particular Celebrity and also Celebrities are more well-known than regular voice actors (which is subjective). For instance with _Scoob!_ where other than Frank Welker returning as Scooby-Doo they recasted everyone including Frank Welker (Fred's official voice) and especially Matthew Lillard (Shaggy's current voice) with celebrities which has happened with the Mario movie by Illumination. The small positive that fans can appreciate with the upcoming Mario animated film is that they did include Kevin Michael Richardson and Charles Martinet (Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi official voices) who are voice actors on the cast listing considering with most animated films they just *ONLY* list and credit the celebrities but not the voice actors, but what does concern the fans is that although Charles Martinet will be in the upcoming animated film he's not going to voice Mario and Luigi. Eve. the upcoming _Sonic the Hedgehog 2_ has Colleen O'Shaughnessey who is a voice actress will still voice Tails in the movie.
I'm looking forward to how Chris Pratt handles his interpretation of Mario, and Jack Black as Bowser is an interesting casting choice.

"It feels like there's this hierarchy between physical, on-screen notoriety and animated voice over."
I mean, yeah. That's it essentially. Not much else to really say on the topic that hasn't been talked about to death already. And that's not to say stunt casting, celebrity casting, or meta cameos can't work, whether its something as big budget as having Peter O'Toole add tangible gravitas to Ratatouille or even something as minor but still clever as having Chris Sabat play the Piccolo-lookalike in One Punch Man's Eng dub from Bang Zoom. Hell you could even look at Beauty & the Beast's original 1991 cast as "celebrity casting" for theater circles since it only featured well-known, respected stage actors & Tony winners rather than voice actors or even unknown stage talent - but not a soul would argue that this casting wasn't pitch perfect for that film.
But given just how overly prevalent it is in animation, how uninspired a lot of those choices turn out to be, and how few opportunities dedicated VAs get in return (whether its voicing feature film characters that aren't just cameos, zero marketing, etc...), its difficult not to be jaded about the whole thing as a audience member from the get-go.

Part of me wonders who had more control over the casting: Nintendo or Illumination. Because, honestly, if it was Nintendo, it would make a lot of sense. Right now in America, people don't worship celebrities like they used to, something which studios are starting to come to terms with because these days the actors are very rarely the main focus of a movie's marketing. This isn't the case over in Japan, however, where they love both their own celebrities and Hollywood celebrities. Then there's the fact that voice actors in Japan have always been treated with a healthy amount of respect and recognition, unlike in America where there is such a massive divide between regular actors and voice actors, which breed animosity when celebrities are cast to voice animated characters. I really think that Nintendo's inability to understand cultural differences between Japanese and American audiences' perception of celebrities is what lead to the casting in this movie.

I will be honest. I heard celebrities until I saw some celebrity movie. Case in point: I never seen a Mike Myers movie series other then shreck. Owen Wilson, Robin Williams, Ben Stiller only seen him in Night in the Museums trilogy I heard them on Madagascar, from Aladin (can't spell name right), lightning McQueen. Years ago I realized Gary chalk voiced optimus prime then I saw him sonic as a cameo (fun fact he was original grounder and 3d dr robotnik) if there's an animated project give it to the voice actors and if celebrities are greatly known give them an opportunity as a guest role and if they want to voice the series aimed for what they're known for if not don't remember movie actors as movie actors and bring them as a guest. I would like to be a voice actor but if I hear someone like peter Cullen or Gary chalk in a role I'll be thrilled but hearing thier roles in the booth out glad give the the cast what role. Mark Hamill as joker when they ask him he gives time but allowed Kevin Michael Richardson. Robin William was mad at disney for Dan castalanata that's miscommunication. I happen to hope if an actor won't disrespect the character of a voice actor brought to life (Paul eiding as max replace by David kaye i don't know his thoughts but mad when he didn't voice preceptor again; to conclude like I said hope if an actor won't disrespect the character of a voice actor brought to life. Because someone in my last school's virtual graduation speech said "a performance is great as it's performers"

It's a damn shame Ocean doesn't do as many dubs as they once did...imagine them doing the voices in a feature film that's not MLP...or even video games that aren't Dragalia Lost.
also, I've said this before and I'll say it again, someone needs to reach out and give Toronto's VAs more chances to do darker and deeper projects, which they normally only get to do in live-action. Scott McCord is getting attention for FROM but he's an excellent voice actor, as are Martin Roach, Dan Petronijevic, and Robert Tinkler who all do voicework in addition to their live-action roles.

I feel that it would probably be more relevant today with celeb VA choices then back then. I can only speak from personal experience but a good number of celebs at the time were only big in the US so when I would here about X person being in a movie I and many would be indifferent cuz why would kids go out of their way to find out y'know? These days celebs are better known thanks to the net so I guess they target fans of their movies or just the general population that is invested in their existence enough to go see a movie just to see how that goes(Though I stopped watching live action movies with the rock in them I have grown so bored of those it hurts. They ain't even fun on a surface action movie level anymore man, I've seen him do everything at this point. The movies aren't even well written dude)

I found this while trying to find people talking about the recent interviews and promo for the mario movie coming out in a few days, because of how atrocious its been, the voice actors barely knowing a thing about their characters or the franchise, being stuck up in interviews and lazy. Like the mario kart with jacksepticeye, it was just Embarassing they didnt even know the two buttons you use in the game, it was Embarassing. At least do a practice round, to be able to at least play it. Then hey have a few facts off the top of ur head for interviews about the games or ur character, cmon pr team at least make it look like ur trying. But nope. Its Embarassing, the only one who seems to genuinely be here for it and enjoying it and trying is jack black as bowser. Anya seems pretty with it too but the rest, its just Embarassing, especially what Seth rogan said about how in the meeting he downright refused to even try and said he could just do it as himself. Its humiliating, he doesnt even know a thing about DK and seemingly just mocked the games and franchise, seeing it as silly and beneath him. Hire voice actors who can do a good job and with a massive franchise like mario, get some that know something about the games, Christ.

The fact that it'll be a musical is sort of a turn off for me. But I'll still probably watch it on-demand someday for free,if they ever have it available. Would've been great if they picked an actual Italian actors to portray Mario. But I guess a Norwegian one works just as well. It's kinda the same situation when they casted Noah Ringer to play Aang. Right along with casting Justin Chatwin to play Goku. Honestly I could careless when it comes to the the ethnicity of the actor. As long as they give me a good performance the person could be rainbow. I don't care just spill your all into the character that your playing and I'm sold. Your skin color is the least of my concerns. However it just sort of reminds me of the days,in which people actually glorified the "art" of black face. Having characters whitewashed in order to please whoever's in control of the project, kinda puts me in a mind of those days. Only they changed it into portraying other ethnicities. Instead of only portraying black people. It's still not ok but whatever, that's the times we live in🤷🏾‍♂️Plus I adored Pratt as Star-Lord,so this oughta be a real treat💯
Charlie Day as Luigi sounds heart warming😄
I'm really really really looking forward to seeing Danny DeVito as Wario👏🏾
I honestly don't know how I feel about Seth as DK but I'm sure he'll probably be similar to how John C. Reilly portrayed Ralph a while ago. Yeah, I’m personally sick of all the celebrity worship in this country. Not saying that celebs can’t be good voice actors but when you literally rip a person who’s been voicing the same character for years just to put a big name on your poster, it just pisses me off and further shows how they don’t care about the overall quality or integrity of the project. As long as it makes them a lot of money, that’s all that matters. And it does make a lot of money, which makes it more infuriating.
When people stop treating celebs like demigods and see them for the normal, flawed, & privileged people they actually are, shit like this will be less common.
    So basically never. lol
