Wow 6 and 1/2 years later ( August 2020) CZcams suggested this video as a new upload to check out.... Thanks for the simple how to and showing how a Bullet Puller actually works. It may seem simple, but for many people that is one of those first steps/lessons into the wonderful world of Reloading
I don't think that YT only suggests new videos, most of the traffic on my channels is on videos that are several years old. Which is fine with me as my content does not tend to current stuff but rather with subjects that may be of interest over the years. Thanks for your comment!
I know this is an older video but one thing I like to do when I’m pulling surplus ammo is seat the bullet down a little bit you’ll hear the sealant snap when you do so makes getting it apart a lot easier. I Always enjoy your channel.
Good tip. One thing to be careful of is if the rounds are crimped close to the edge of the crimping groove, if they are the cases can sometimes be buckled when seating the bullet deeper to break the bond. This does not happen all the time but I have had it happen to me.
If you use a regular bullet seating die and seat the bullet a little deeper, it breaks the varnish seal and makes pulling the bullet much easier. Also you can use a regular shell holder from your press instead of the collet, just turn the opening to the rear.
I've found that seating the bullet deeper works sometimes, sometimes it does not help much. I've used the press shell holder in the puller, but I do not prefer it as it tends to distort the rims to some degree.
The foam earplug is a good trick. As for the shell holder in place of the collet I have done that but cannot recommend it as there have been reports of accidents (rounds firing) when doing so.
Was going to say that some powder made it out of the puller and onto the counter despite your efforts, but I found that it was actually some cruft on my screen. A clever mod to the puller -- will do the same for mine just for neatness as I'm always spilling things. About whacking on a hard surface: do you always use the concrete floor? I had some 223 that I needed to get apart and it just would not come apart when whacked on the floor. I took a scrap piece of 2×4, positioned it end grain up on the floor, and whacked the puller on that: the bullet popped out on the first whack. Have found that the end grain trick seems to work every time on difficult to pull stuff.
End grain does work quite well, I often use my wood chopping block instead of the floor. I cant say as though I've noticed a difference between the two in effectiveness. I mostly use the concrete floor now as the chopping block is out in the garage and not as convenient to use.
I found that using a shell holder tends to damage the rims of the rounds as it does not contact as much of the rim and does not hold it as tightly as the collets do.
Next time, try this: Take the shell holder you use for the specific caliber bullet you are disassembling. Use it in place of the "collet" (they don't work worth a spit) Put the bullet into the shell holder and put into the bullet puller with the opening of the shell holder downward. Tighten the cap on the bullet puller and wack away. You can thank me later , HA HA
I've done that but stopped as I've been told that some folks have had rounds go off while using a reloading shell holder in the bullet puller. I find the supplied three segment collets work well enough.
Yeah, except that the powder will stick to the adhesive inside the hole (if the patch applied from the outside), if it fits on the inside then it ought to work, probably not as the plastic sheet though. The round patches I have are too small to work, they probably make bigger ones though.
+SexyLeg Unicorn There are some rounds that do not fit in my impact puller as they are too large, for example 460 Weatherby Magnum. Also you should not uyse these pullers on rim fire ammo. But other than that most metallic ammo works just fine in an impact style puller.
any reloadiing shop will have one brand or another. also midway.com, amazon, natchez, etc. Just search for "Kinetic bullet puller". They should be inexpensive. I really like the hornady press mounted collet puller with a quck toggle. It is faster, but there are advantages of either style.

awesome modification you man bro auper great job. These puller worth it compared to the Hornady Press die puller

Nice mod, will apply to mine. Thanks for sharing this
No problem!
Thanks I was wondering why all this powder on the floor was coming from you explained it good.
Yeah, it can bounce out without it really being obvious.

Those collets are nice but they keep coming apart while using it and a pain to get them back together again thanks for sharing great idea.
Sometimes changing the O rings that hold the pieces of the collet can help.
Use foam rubber inside to prevent damage to bullet and use shell holder for each size.
The foam earplug is a good trick. As for the shell holder in place of the collet I have done that but cannot recommend it as there have been reports of accidents (rounds firing) when doing so.
Good mod for this issue. It shall be instituted here most rapido-speedo. Thanks!
No problem!

Great Idea
Thanks.
I also put a foam ear plug in the bottom.Keeps from damaging bullet tips when they come out with force and slam into the bottom. SHOOT SAFE!!!!!!!!!!
I have some sort of padding in the nose of the puller to keep soft points from getting damaged. I put it in so long ago I do not remember what I used.
I cant believe you still use the collet that comes with the puller use a shell older works much better and stops loss of powder also
I found that using a shell holder tends to damage the rims of the rounds as it does not contact as much of the rim and does not hold it as tightly as the collets do.
good mod..well done
Thanks.

how to make hommed gun barss
Cheapest and easiest method is using round target patches and just stick one on the open hole. No worry about any pressure in case of detonation.

How do you pull a 50 bmg round
They make a big press mounted tool for the .50 BMG:
www.midwayusa.com/product/968610/rcbs-collet-bullet-puller-1-1-2-12-thread-without-collet
Ditch the collets and use your shell holder from the die set.
That does work but some folks have reported the rounds going off when used with shell holders instead of collets.
does this work with any caliber?

+314299 Shooting Channel so a .357 magnum could work?
+SexyLeg Unicorn Yep.
I just get one for 2$ was that good
If it's compete that's a heck of a good deal.
Where would you recommend to find such a tool? Online?

GunFun ZS Ah, my thanks
Wish they made them of clear Plastic so you can see whats going on inside the hammer while using it etc.
Not sure why they make them of colored plastic.
I see in the comments people claim rounds are going off with out the primer being struck? I call BS.
I don't see how that could happen with regular hunting or ball type ammo. There is nothing to hit the primer.
