Here is the Targa of the new 992 generation of #911, as the left field choice for #Porsche aficionados! Perhaps one of the most bizarre stories isn’t he automotive world, the Targa was born out of fear of auto regulations. In the previous 356 gen to the 901, the convertible Porsche was a big seller particularly in the USA. But with the 911, Porsche feared the NHTSA would ban the sales of convertibles. Thus they created a drop top with a permanent steel roll bar: the targa. "Targa" - shield in Italian - came from the Targa Florio sports car road race in Sicily, in which Porsche had scored seven victories.
From 1967 to 1982, this was the only way to get a convertible 911, until the cabriolet eventually debuted.
So the First Targa set the style in 1967 by way of the stainless steel clad roll bar, but later from 993 onwards the Targa saw a big departure in its form, much to its detriment. It turned into essentially a panoramic roof with sliding top, it didn’t look distinctive vs the coupe, and the centre of gravity was higher thanks to the mechanism.
It wasn’t till 991 that the Targa regained it’s desireabilty and returned to the aesthetics of the original Targa, with a hugely complex two piece folding system. One that carries through into our car today.
It consists of two parts, front soft top and rear glass, which has been further weight optimised. It takes only 19 seconds to open and close, and must be done at standstill. And it looks incredible, especially with the new satin black option on our car today!
So how different is this to the standard 4S? It still has 450BHP, 530NM and the 0-60 is an impressive 3.4 seconds on launch, which is the same as the cabriolet. But how much does the targa add or detract from the experience?Today we explore:
    - History of the 911 Targa
    - Targa roof operation
    - Exhaust sound
    - Interior review
    - First drive Review
    - Conclusion

To me this is the best looking car in the world for now. It’s like an athlete in a tailored suit. Classic look. Masculine stance. Phenomenal performance. And the right number of doors. It’s everything a vehicle should be.

Great video, great content....I own a 991 Targa myself and I loved listening to the history of this model. One small observation : Targa in Italian = Plate (like a car plate...) and not Shield. Nonetheless the name is related to the legendary Targa Florio race in Sicily that Porsche won many times

I made the decision way back in February to put a deposit down on a new targa 4 s which is due for delivery mid October i only dreamed of owning an 911 and its been a long time coming, and to honest i’ve spent too much time worrying what people would think and not that i have worked hard and sacrificed much to afford one , but this review helped and reassured me that id made the right choice from the new range of 911..

he's right, the targa used to be a "who would buy such a weird looking car" to "this is the one to get" Porsche. cant quite put my finger on the specific changes that made it look real good in the latest version. tho i think the increased size of the 911 helped proportion the targa top to the entire silhouette of the car, but its more than that too

In real life it sounds much better, with more bass. It's a deep sound below 4.5k rpms, onwards sounds more flat 6'ish. It doesn't sound much better than an N/A 3.4 or 3.8, but it still sounds great, atleast for me. This new engine is loud but not obnoxiously loud. It's enough to make it echo through a small city and create the sports car presence. (Telling from my experience)

Nice review and comparison with old and the new cars ,I loved the targa ,I once owned a 1978 Super Carrera , factory turbo Bodied Targa in GP white with black leather interior with Red top dash for a decade, I tested new one after seeing the return of the original targa hoop in 991 form and then again in 992 form ,Car just felt too fat for the A roads ,The old cars it was just the shoulders and hips bulging out like muscles with slim waste line ,I didn't like the floating digi screens that light up like a xmas tree, too much info , lovely car but they've lost that jet airplane sound and cockpit style feel and drive with the 5 dials and a 915 Mechanical gearbox. It really feels like a robot now
and I thought my 997 turbo was a big back in the day when it was new.
