I will be surprised if there is any part of The Invitation that wasn't given away in the trailer. I feel like Ive already seen the entire movie after watching it. It even shows the end where she's obviously convinced them she's going along with the wedding, only to go full badass girl boss and kill everyone. You know that is exactly how it will end, too.

People always do the opposite of what we would do in the same situation, I find some kind of weapon & get the hell going, not stopping till I found help.
The Breach started to feel like a Lovecraftian horror, until they mentioned Hell, which I feel is kind of a cop-out. I think cosmic horror is more terrifying than religious imagery. Why muck up a good terror dive with the battle between good and evil when you can build suspense more effectively by discarding morality? The cosmos is indifferent to us, and this powerlessness is what makes it all the more horrifying.
Well, it’s based on the novel by Nick Cutter, and that one was a straight cosmic horror….hopefully the trailer is misleading, and the movie doesn’t end up being about Hell

I think that having hell and religious themes is the more terrifying of the two. Don't get me wrong, the cosmic horror films are more interesting to watch, but the idea of absolute, objective morality in the hands of an omnipotent being with a will of its own, and eternal torment for disobedience sounds a lot scarier than an indifferent universe. I kind of see what you mean, though. There's no equal or greater good cosmic force to help the protagonists fight the evil one, just an indifferent threat.
I was going to say this had to be very much influenced by From Beyond. Even resorting to religious context, cosmic horror can still be attributed through a colloqial lens viewing it as originating from hell rather than perceiving it in a more cosmic scale.

Feels like a mix between the tv series The Exorcist, the religion & split iris/pupil, with the movie The void with the cosmic gore horror

"She Will" looks interesting - that's Alice Krige (Silent Hill, Ghost Story, Star Trek, TCM) and she's always cool even if the movie isn't.

I have some hope for The Breach, as it's based on a work of Nick Cutter's.. I am about to start the audiobook of this, as it's the only thing of his I haven't heard/read n it's audible only. I am kinda surprised they chose this as a first film adaptation, as The Troop and The Deep would both adapt well to screen. Little Heaven is pretty good too. If you love horror, and haven't read the aforementioned books by Nick Cutter..I highly recommend.

The Breach was absolutely brilliant - wish it was available in print though and not just an audio book. It was sometimes hard to visualise so looking forward to the film.
I quite enjoyed American Carnage and the small bits of comic relief. Definitely something I'd watch again

@Vincent M. That's your opinion, mate. He's released a lot of awesome hits over the decades...solo, in bands and collaborating with other well known musicians who love and respect his style. You might not like his music but I, and a lot of others, do🤷🏻♀️. I play guitar and in the 80s, Gunners' AFD was the first thing I taught myself from start to finish. He's definitely no Dimebag but guitarists have their own sound/style.

The invitation was pretty by the numbers.. not surprising as it was pg13. Not terrible, but very predictable, n they give most of the movie away in the trailer. Barbarian was pretty cool I just saw that, def takes some interesting turns... The breach has me most excited, as it's based on a story by Nick Cutter. Blackwood might be ok too, I sometimes enjoy western style horror.

Really American carnage isn’t even horror I don’t understand why it’s on this list. A movie about racist American forcing immigrants to work in a nursing home till they die doesn’t seem to interesting to me but everything is subjective

I retract SOME of that. *She Will does carry a worth watching interest starring Alice Krige and Malcolm McDowell.

American Carnage is really blatant with it, to a degree of outright clumsiness. There's some good ideas in that film, but it's nowhere near subtle enough. I've seen She Will; it has a definite feminist agenda to it, but I'll give it a pass for the agenda not getting in the way of the actual film-making and the fact it's a good film.

Most of the movies looked interesting. Even though the main plot of most of them was "a creepy house which the protagonist can't leave".

Too many identikit zombie and slasher films, and 'elevated horror' is usually just paceless and pointless pretension. Having said that, I've seen two of these films. American Carnage is a pretty awkward example of horror as intended social commentary; it has some good ideas but doesn't really hold together well. I enjoyed She Will. Folk horror. Doesn't really work as a horror film the way that Men does, but is aesthetically gorgeous.

1.) They were the dominant medium during the video nasty panic of the 80's, so a strange, subconscious sense that these taboos were embodied in the medium of the tape itself began to take shape (Probably helped by the idea of certain horror film production being 'cursed' around that time as well) 2.) The artifacts of aged VHS/video give images an otherworldly quality which can help reinforce those superstitions.

"The Invitation" is already the title of a 2015 thriller.
Maybe it makes sense after you've seen the movie but "She Will" is an incredibly off-putting title. Same for "The Barbarian" (at least for a horror movie).
