I love how you can so fluently switch between English and Elvish.
Thank you for appreciating that! 🥰🙏
Lmao.
Dude said Elvish lmao. well played
Ironically Cobain's guitar from this performance sold for $6,010,000 (£4,960,000) at auction in 2020.
And the sweater sold for $334,000
What's ironic about that
@@GeorgeTropicana because he's asking for half a million for a guitar, before GoFundMe and Patreon
@@user-cs4fg1rm5k not sure if it’s ironic or just coincidental but definitely interesting
It wasn't from that performance though. They wanted to sell the guitar to Kurt but he didn't buy it or play it at the MTV unplugged gig 🤷♂️
I've seen and listened to this performance hundreds of times. Every time, without fail, when he opens it up with the pained, guttural scream, I get chills down my spine. The entire Unplugged set was brilliant. Raw emotion was the perfect way to describe it.
Oh god CRINGE

That last time he sings shiver really gets me. He sounds so wounded.
That is some of the quietest drumming Dave has ever done.
FACTS😆😂🤣😭
And he nailed it also🤘
I can think of only one other song that he drummed that quietly. And that was "something in the way"
"This isn't singing anymore this is channeling" 😆
You're so talented 😌
When Kurt starts screaming, it's like a farewell to the fans. Your best performance! When he opens his eyes you can see the feeling of "liberation". 4 months later we all know what happens...
😢
Raises an interesting question. Would you give your life in order to create a piece of art that would inspire such emotion in millions of people?
Loved seeing your eyes getting SO wide when Kurt started his raspy scream! Your technical insights into Kurt's sound on this song stands apart from other reactors.... Great job as always, Anna! 😊
Celtic passion scares the Germanic peoples....they are not used to it😂😂😂😂
It doesn't matter how many times I hear this song, I always get goosebumps from listening to it every single time.
I think you missed his piercing stare at the end…shivers
Heard this dozens of times. Still gives me chills. Unprecedented performance.
I love how Anna feels and is vulnerable enough to share emotions as she takes in these legendary performances. Another wonderful reaction and analysis, Anna.
RIP Kurt, I think this is my favourite Nirvana performance, it's so passionate and raw. I get chills every time I watch this video, and I always have a little chuckle at Dave Grohl's subdued playing here. It fits the song, but he usually hits like the drums owe him money😄
half step down was how we always played back in those days. post punk, post hair metal, sad grungy era (which I LOVED). I was like 13 at this time and just learning how to play but we still did a half step to be "cool". after that era, we "grew up" and all played drop D haha.
Perhaps the greatest Kurt Cobain performance of all time.
Been waiting…how have you not seen this???
Super cool. I like that you let them play! love the analysis as well. Go Finland!
I don't come here for the vocal explanations. It is so wonderful watching your face when a song or a performance moves you. Thank you Anna and I also very much like some of your personal music.
Thank you so much for this comment Nikki! 🥰
I know vocal an(n)nalysis is not for all but I am happy to know that you still find other parts of my channel entertaining!
Kurt's raw pain shouldn't be dissected in such a cold, detached way. I understand she's a vocal coach and all but it's out of place here imo
Nirvana's MTV unplugged is my absolute favorite musical performance ever! I've lost count of the amount of times I've watched it really. This song was such a powerfull one in particular and I love that they ended on this highest point of the performance.
A recommendation of mine is: Mazzy Star - Fade Into You - 10/2/1994 - Shoreline Amphitheatre, another very moving song and delivery.
It’s always amazing when true feelings can’t be hidden 👌🏻💖
I was very happy to see this pop up on my YT feed. I am of an age that Nirvana was active during my teenage years. They meant a lot to me musically. Nirvana's MTV Unplugged set is legendary. Great choice of a song.
They crushed this entire performance.
That moment…. When Kurt is wailing away, soooo amazing!!! But the stop and his bright eyes, like coming to a realization of some sort…gets me every time😢 Such an amazing performance ❤️❤️❤️
Storytelling you say? Would love to watch your analysis and breakdown of Colter Wall's Kate McCannon for both the story and the unique voice 😉
Nobody can sing like him. ♥
Everything in this video is perfect, the band, Kurt's interpretation, always visceral and of course his analysis, which makes everything more fantastic, thank you for this video.
Kurts breathe is so moving
8:19. Do you see the banding on the sticks for the nameless drummer? He was tied to that stage! Made to play, only inside the sticks!😪🌿🌸
That's a standard banding? :)
thank you very much for this reaction, I love Nirvana 💙
The Curse Of KK Hammond does an amazing swampy blues version of this called The Pines🤘
I saw them in concert 3 weeks after they filmed this, it was in St. Paul, Minnesota for their In Utero tour.
And in my opinion, I think this one of the greatest covers of any song, ever.
im listening hardcore, heavy metal, rap, balad, love song, opera, classic song... bro this band always be legend ❤
he does that with his jaw to keep time
My fav Nirvana performance
Anna Vaskelainen! I've returned for this one of a kind performance and your insightful reaction and impactful analysis and also fully experiencing as an audience! 🎉 🎤🎙🎧 Timed the mood perfectly after revisiting your reaction to Pearl Jam Black! I love the enlightening technical musical analysis as well i had never known until now, but only maybe FELT back then! 🎉 😅 😢 🎤 🎙 🎧 🌌
Tori Amos (another musician you should check out for her amazing live performances), does a really different cover of Nirvanna's "Smell's Like Teen Spirit"
Tori Amos was writing music at the age of FIVE and received a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University at the same age. Subsequently kicked out at 11 for 'musical insubordination" 😁
I think you'll like her stuff. Look for the live versions. I can offer suggestions.
Something in the Way.
I think you love that song;
Birdy - "Not About Angels" (Acoustic Perez Hilton Performance)
Maybe you could react & analyse Joni Mitchell, “Woodstock” live (from a BBC appearance in about 1970 I think) be great to hear your thoughts. Loved this breakdown of Kurt singing BTW.
I can never get over 7:48 , there's just something heartbreaking about that breath and quick stare he makes as he composes himself for the last bit of his performance. And as he sustains the last word of the song and see the tension in his closed eyes, it's like his throat is burning and scratched from how he just sang a moment before, and it's all he can do just to push through to the end. Despite the emotion of the performance, it doesn't seem like his heart was in it, almost like he was giving it his all out of spite, not caring if it hurt him or not. I wonder what kind of person he would be like today.
Loved that. Talk about hammering the downbeat in the midsection. Maybe when you mentioned style of the performance made me remember this since you asked for suggestions, but this compilation artist album had an Elton John song turned into a gospel performance. I found a good live performance under "Oleta Adams - Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me (Countdown, 1991)" on CZcams. There's some low audience talking but that stops or gets buried soon during the performance.
Correct. They tuned down a 1/2 step for this song. I'm not a huge Nirvana fan but this song is so viscerally powerful it's impossible to ignore its brilliance. Hands down, the best Unplugged show MTV produced.
You should check out Jerry Reed's version of this song. His guitar work is excellent.
Hyvää Päivää Anna.
Nice reaction .
👍👍👍💕😎🇸🇪
I don't watch reaction videos. BUT I made an exception for Ren Hi Ren reaction videos. I did so to see how many folk were as astounded as I was by that video. Recently, I came across this beautiful gal reacting to that video. So, I just wanted to say of all the rection videos I watched, this woman was far superior in her presentation that any other I have watched. She gives a highly intelligent and thorough review. Her knowledge of music is obvious. She is in a class of her own.
Kurt Cobain was my favorite! 🤔👍 Great reaction.
Happy to make you happy!
I just love the blues as a genre. Usually, I get the feeling that it's a genre that flies under the radar, and you don't meet that many people listening to it or talking about it. So my ears naturally prick up when I hear someone mention the blues (or spirituals or traditionals and so on). I did know Leadbelly but I hadn't heard 'In the Pines' before. Thanks to you I can now add another great song to my library. Well, two actually. I must include Nirvana's wonderful cover as well. Kiitos for that.
Yesss another blues lover! If you love blues, then you'll probably like my reaction to

Leadbelly!!!
Thank you Anna and thank you Kurt.
I love playing this song. You can just loose yourself in the blues.
SRV tuned his guitar a half step down...he was a famous blues guitarist.
Anna I enjoyed this analysis very much, You are well educated in your craft and it really shows Thanks!😊
Loved this. I think you'll also like Alice in Chains Unplugged version of Got Me Wrong. Two different lead vocalists with very different styles!
Hi Anna missed you, all u tube notifications need refreshing.
Classic discordant sound tuning.. makes it all feel more emotionally broken/painfull ..😎 Masters of this include your actual master Tom Waits and the Australian lead of the lightning seeds.. Nick Cave a man who has been to hell and back.. but you can hear it in his Duet with Kiely .. Down where the Roses grow 🌹😢
Happy to find you again looking at this classic Blues Grunge rock performance..🧙🏻♂️ you should throw in a wild card review like Purafe doing one of her blues and slide guitar classics. 🤩😉
Hello Anna.. this song is so good, any unplugged version of Nirvana or Alice in Chains songs are the greatest. ❤
Your face went red when he started screaming and you almost cried, it was amazing to see.
Also she started licking her lips
@@markxv2267 I mean… not trying to get weird or anything… haha it was just a beautiful reaction
I love this. USA we should start to learn to speak= a different language in elementary school.
Wow this is such an heartbreaking song. So sad he didn’t see a future.
so happy to see your reaction to this amazing performance
Nirvana's and Pearl Jam's MTV unplugged performances, for me was, and still is, proof that i am for good reasons in love with "grunge". Anyway, i am from Serbia 🇷🇸, I love your reaction!💓💓💓
Don't forget Alice in chains unplugged. Too many dead 90s artists.
Great reaction as always !! Tortured soul indeed !! I dont understand a word you are saying when you speak finnish, but the language sounds so beautiful when you speak. Cheers from Texas !!
Thx! Hope you had at the subtitles on at least! Greetings to Texas! 😊
@@annavaskelainen Yw and I rewatched it with the finnish subtitles. Cheers and Thx !!
Great review Anna!, you're the best
Many rock stuff in the nineties and 80s are tuned a half stap down.
I hear you say "nou moi" at the start of the video . Moi means hello and or bye in Groningen (the Netherlands), it's funny you say that also.
I got this album for Christmas back in then, those were the days.
Thats a pretty common in blues and rock to tune down a half step. On a side note. A lot of the 90's bands would play in a dropped D tuning. Where only the low E is tuned to D and the rest are standard. Bands like Nirvana, Tool, Alice in Chains would use it often.
The song was originally arranged with Mark Lanegan and appears first on his solo album The Winding Sheet. Another great grunge vocalist you should explore.
It was so amazing this genre of music! So many great singers, but somewhat tortured souls. Cobain, Staley, Wood, Cornell, Weiland. Listening to any of their music gives me many emotions - pleasure to of heard such great music, but sorrow and empathy for these people who struggled to cope with life. Very sad! Peace to you!
great reaction, great performance
Very interesting reaction, thanks for commenting this performance 👏👍
The half step down tuning is more or less a common thing in rock music.. many bands do it. One famous band, that is a bit connected to nirvana the foo fighters dont tune down, but other acts do and did it for quiet some time.
Layne, Chris and Kurt
Mark Lanegan did some good version, with Screaming Trees... and also alone for the show American Gods.
"It might be nice to eventually start playing acoustic guitars, and be thought of as a singer and a songwriter. Rather than a 'Grunge Rocker you know?' Then one day I may be able to take advantage of that when I'm older, and sit down in a chair, and play acoustic guitar like Johnny Cash or something you know? And it won't be thought of as a big joke"
-Kurt Cobain 1993, you did and we loved it. He had plans for the future beyond Nirvana...chills forever
There is a garage version of this song from the late 80s where Mark Lanegan was teaching Kurt about Leadbelly. It eventually appeared on Lanegans Winding Street album, Lanegan does the lead vocals while Kurt makes the guitair wail and cry. Lanegan later complained that Kurt sang it much better than he did.
MTV was very upset with Kurt and the rest of the band because they weren't gonna play their hits and chose instead to play some B-sides and covers for the show.
Brilliant 😍
One thing I love about bands from this era is they obviously weren’t super-by the book. From Kurt’s bluntly spoken first line, to even playing out of tune as you found, they often did things outside of expected music industry norms. But that final raw, screamed passage is incredible. He truly channeled something awfully deep there.
I love this woman so much ❤
I'm actually wearing my suomi shirt from Mäantta (we had an exchange student)
5:14. It’s incredible how closely this sounds to Die Antwoord’s soft spoken album!😆🌿🌸
First off...Hi!. The MTV unplugged series created some amazing moments in music. I was never a big Nirvana fan but this performance was pretty special and you got to see a bit inside Kurt's tortured soul here. But if you stay in this genre Chris Cornell is the best singer of this era. Anything of his from Soundgarden, Temple of the dog(thats him and Eddie Vedder's band) or Audioslave would be excellent to review. Happy Friday..
Yeah, Kurt tuned all over the place...2, the bassist, Krist Novaselic revealed years later that Kurt's first childhood instrument were the drums, & over his life he developed a habit of "clicking" his jaw to keep time, even after he got older & had long since moved on to guitar, he kept the habit, i dont know ur language, but ive seen it throw off several classically trained reactors who are singers...lastly...that pause & sigh where he catches his breath... *that* is the most famous sigh in all of rock history, so epic & heartbreaking, + that momentary vacant stare😞....anyway, lovely & great reaction, like & subbed:)
Awesome performance and always love to see you smile! 😍
Bellaaa! 🥰 How are you?
@@annavaskelainen
Great! Thanks for your reply! 🥰
@@teambellavsteamaliceI never forget my long-time supporters ❤️
they tuned differently, but also Kurt used to play a broken guitar that had a weird tone for the records
Anna güzel kadın !
Nirvana and Kurt in particular never needed perfect tuning, or perfect jaw movement.
That's what made them special.
Kurt could sing the phonebook and we'd listen.
Anna you are the best, love you!!! ❤❤
Thanks for the knowledge and if I can suggest for future reaction Rolling Stones Gimme Shelter 👋
Kurt didn't need a traditional beautiful singing voice to touch our souls. I used to think about self-deleting myself as a teenager in the 90s. Kurt's suicide made it very obvious that it only leaves more pain behind. It's never the answer, he taught me that...
Very nice
Hi, I recommend you listen to The Warning, the singer Dany has a remarkable voice. You could make a video of it
You picked another great song! Great reaction!!!!
Omg tää o paras juttu mitä en tienny et tarvitsin!!!
In grunge music in general, and in Kurt's case in particular, it is very common that the guitars are tuned half a step down or to drop D tunning.

HI love your chanel
Best ever mtv unplugged for me
Probably the best thing MTV ever did with too many great performances for me to choose a favorite.
Despite how much i love Nirvana and Pearl Jam's MTV Unplugged, Alice in Chains will probably forever be my favorite Grunge MTV Unplugged album ever done!
I Love how the Grunge's would play just off.
