Quick question: Is it Okay to wait 3 min in every set 3x8
Not sure how you knew I was doing shoulders today, but I would appreciate it if you didn't read my mind. Thank you
So true bro
I know right. Like we all on the same program 😂🏋️♂️
Who’s split starts Monday with shoulders?
Ayye, fellow Monday shoulder day bros
@@friedmotherboards2395 my split starts Friday and ends Tuesday so Monday ends up as shoulder day, just how work schedule lines up best with gym
Summary and timestamps:
Shoulder press, or overhead press (machine) @6:37
Lateral raises @9:52
Chest supported reverse lateral raises @11:43
3 sets 10-15 reps each (should be a STRUGGLE!)
Thanks
Smith machine❌
Smith machines suck, is limiting and can be dangerous for your rotator cuffs and strain your debts, free movement is best
Goat’d
Thank you!
Bro why have I just now found your channel with the lat pull down video, you break down the muscular structure and supportive muscle roles better than anyone I've seen on CZcams so far. Immediately subscribed. For a beginner/intermediate lifter like myself that's only been working out for about a year and just trying my best to follow form this is a god send to have it all broken down and I feel like these videos will really help with mind muscle connection and understanding how to best target and isolate the muscle groups I am actually intending to focus. Thanks for putting so much effort and care into it. Real MVP here.
I have been free of pain in the rotator cuff, thanks to the fact that I have been doing this exercise (3:49) to warm up every session.
Years suffering pain, and in a month it was gone.
Thanks for life Jonni!
Bro I'm start doing that. Question, do U it b4 every work out or just when Ur doing Shoulders?
@@rollingratchet do it before every workout
@@rollingratchet before every workout
How long reps/sets?
Nothing wrong with doing it with light weight for a warm up. It's just not a mass building exercise.
71 year-old here, loving the way you present this great info. Thanks man.
I always remember your advice because of your humor. "Stack the joints" has become my mantra and has changed every upper body exercise I do! I'm a female and not a very strong one, so it's easy to let my form break down, but I refuse to do it. I watch all of your videos and I'm never confused, always entertained, and you always make me smarter. Thank you!!
Reading comments like these make me happy
Awww 👍🏼
good work, keep at it👍
Thank you too for commenting
Wanted to ask, he said it a couple of times. I'm just learning to workout. What does stacking joints mean?
First time here. But I'm a veteran gym guy and I think you're the best. No bs. You do it right and explain the movements. "stack the joints" is so key to safety and efficiency. Good pacing with audio and visual too. I'll be back. Thanks Jonni
What's great about this video is your reinforcement on correct form. Bad form? Risk injuries/minimal gains. I also am feeling particularly great right now because your emphasis on the correct movements have been the ones I've been doing and focused on for several years now. Fantastic content sir
Most people use too much weight on laterals. Hence, the break down in form. Another great video, thanx.
This.
Truth.
Hell yea. 25s and a pour at the top is money
Exactly. People think more is always better. It's not. Especially with shoulders. You do less weight with correct form, and it will be just as tough, and you'll feel where you should. Not be cheating, not working the shoulders right, and end up ripping something anyway.

The Worst
0:40 - Behind Neck Press
1:54 - The Upright Row
2:41 - The Cuban Press
The Best
4:36 - Smith/Machine Shoulder Press
7:30 - Lateral Raises
10:25 - Incl. DB Reverse Fly
Thank you!
The Split View, while working out and explaining how, was perfect. The video quality is clear, video and sound. Excellent!!! Thank you.
I love that you really break down the technique and form of the exercise! It’s so difficult to know if you are doing it right on your own! And then it just leads to injuries.
Keep the instructional videos coming. I always find great ways to tweak my workouts and form. At 55, less pain and injuries while lifting manageable yet respectable weight is my goal. Thank you!
As always Jonni, keeping it 💯!! Never giving us BS and has tried and true real world experience! Keep the amazing info coming coach!!!!
I just recently started going back to the gym, and I wound up doing shoulders yesterday. I'm actually glad I stumbled across this video because it showed me everything I was doing wrong and now I know what I have to do to get it right.
I absolutely love how you explain things. Going through the wrong ways is super helpful.
Amazing information Jonni, your informative tips & tricks never fails me. I've literally finished up my shoulder routine today, & incorporated each movement you've spoken of, lasting 30-45 secs for each set. Just know it was one of the best shoulder days ive had in a long time. Thanks bro
This man knows what he is doing AND HIS PRESENTATION IS A+! THANKS DUDE 😊
Thanks brother !! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
The best part of the video is the editing
You can do the barbell row and the rear delt fly on the bench at this angle or lower maybe. It just makes so much more sense.
I get he hates seeing people lifting too heavy weights.
@@JonniShreve Prefer this than ripping on the other CZcams advisors 😂. Look I know they can be a bit full of themselves but dont let them upset you.
Gah, finally! A fitness person on CZcams who knows what he's talking about. It seems like more and more fitness creators are trying to reinvent the wheel in counter productive ways and/or spreading bad information. Thank you so much for being real and sharing good info!
Love this guy. Been working out for 30 years but still learned a lot from him.
boss your underrated, not all CZcamsrs with like your content doesn't time to teach the proper way and techniques. keep it up
Your detailed analysis and demonstration of how to properly target the intended muscle while protecting the joint from undue strain/damage, is head and shoulders(see what I did there?)above all the rest. You are truly an expert in the weight room. Wish I had your advice back in the 80's when I was buff... and doing it all wrong, thanks to the so-experts that we all followed. Looking forward to more of your vids.
Your videos have seriously helped me to not only build more effective muscle in the gym, but I've also stopped hurting my joints from pointlessly heavy weights and useless movements. Thanks a ton man, please keep on doing what you're doing!
Me too... Once I swallowed my pride, dropped the weight and traded that for form... Total different body build. Love this channel
You're respectful and helpful and have great information. It's nice to see.
No swearing is huge too. Thank you.
Only the technical side explanation helps a ton. I do not know how I ended up to your channel, but I'm glad I did.
wow, i've been watching and taking advices from some many fitness influencers. Im glad i came across a few ones that are really reliable and actually that makes sense. All the top 3 exercises he listed as the best is what im currently doing and im actually proud i fell to the right path as a newbie. You and Sean are literally in my top lists when im seeking for tips.
I was looking for some good basic shoulder exercises and you did not disappoint. Thank you for the detailed video. Subbed!
So happy I found your channel!! Super informational and entertaining. The editing had me cracking up hahaha
Def gonna apply what I've learned in your videos at the gym!
You and I see it so clearly, and you make it so simple to understand…
I can see why you’re an excellent coach…
Wow. Beautifully shot, edited, and organized information. The bread crumb format on the bottom that tells you what's coming up and what stage you're at in the explanation is fantastic. The little red x in the corner meaning no, and the green check meaning yes, was also very good.
Lets gooo!! Glad you liked it
Thanks!
Great video and reassuring! It's crazy how I already knew about the 3 no go's on shoulder exercises intuitively. You do things for long enough, learn to listen to your body, and you know what is mechanically good and what is not for the body.
I did shoulders today and this video come up. I found it really good and clear compared to other channels. Showing us how you properly set up ad some just start of and show u the motion without no setup lol. Legend subscribed
I watched hundreds of coaching videos on lifting. I think this channel may be the best I’ve found Thanks Johnny
I stamp this as a lifter of 9 years‼️ this is nearly my exact routine except I do barbell seated military press instead of the smith. Awesome video thank you for giving my routine your blessing 🙏🏼🙏🏼
New to the channel and loving these down to earth videos! Jonni has a great personality that keeps bringing me back and is getting me motivated
Straight to the point no bullshit straight explaining you deserve love keep up the good work
Much respect frm Chicago. Thx 4 ur gr8 advice, and your content is even better. Jim
Bro you are the man!!! Thanks for sharing this. Been focusing on my shoulders a lot recently
Bro I love your clarity and honesty and relaxed nature of just wanting to help teach people the right way to get their gains. Subscribed!!!!
That’s the goal man, I’m glad you can see it. Welcome to the community 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
LMFAO 🤣
Thanks, Jonni! I always get a lot from your videos. The best trainer on CZcams!
One of the flyest detailed workout instruction videos I've seen to date. Please keep this energy up my brother. After I try your tips and receive more results onto what I've already received. I shall post.
loving the series bruh ...keep it up💪
The series you have been doing on proper technique have been awesome. Total game changer on optimizing my exercises. Thank You for Telling It Like It Is.
Omg this save me a lot of time and pain on my body.thank you so much instant follow, god bless man!!
Your way of aproaching and explaining the exercises is great. Well done! I am learning some real stuff here.
Just barely found your channel.. brother you have a new subscriber..
I’m intermediate personally
But I also have a lot to learn as far as shoulders and back exercises
I’m gonna be watching your videos I appreciate your approach to exercise it’s very informative
Great information as always, in the last 2 months of following your diet and training advice. I've lost body fat, maintained energy and got better muscle development, one of these for every muscle group would be a game changer.
Honestly my one stop shop for lifting advice, I recommend you to everyone I know.
You're so much fun to watch and very informative.
Thank you for shoulder training tips..keep fit.
That first exercise I did about 17 years ago haven't touched it since man I got the worst neck cramps and aches in my life thank you brother love your videos
Headaches too or just nect cramps...??
I had to subscribe, because after years of trial and error, these 3 exercises are exactly the ones I’ve been using for my shoulder routine for the past few years now. The upright rows and and behind the neck shoulder presses were always BS in my book. You just confirmed for me that I made the right choices in my training. Looking forward to more content like this! 💪😎
Welcome to the Community! I’m glad we’re on the same page!!
Great video to immediately use in the gym. Showing ALL the "ways" people try and manipulate their arms hands elbows etc. on these shoulder lifts, then showing how the correct way works, very helpful. I have zero cartilage in my left shoulder but still nearly operating at 100%, as long as I get my bones position correctly. Thanks.
The rocking aspect of your description really made a great point
Keep up the vids bro, proper training makes such a huge difference.
Great demonstrates Johnny! noting how light of weight is needed for all 3 recommended exercises, especially the DB exercises
Finally! Someone who actually knows what they’re talking about! Great video Jonni, spot on ! 👏👏
Absolute King! Bros chest is a whole ass shelf... actual goals bruh. Thank you for the time you put in to help others!
I'm stoked I found your channel brah, my new favorite workout coach on CZcams without a doubt. Started lifting 2 months ago and still going strong. The way that you explain everything from a safety-first perspective is what makes the difference for me. 4 little kids at home now and need to be on the top of my game. Thanks for everything you do.
Another great video my brother. A few hours ago Mike O Hearn released an “old school” back workout video. Looks like it could be a great coaching up video. God bless.
If you would do that back workout you would probably get bigger lol it's a phenomenal back workout more people should do it
Haha Good ol natty Mike
I love that you crack yourself up. Which cracks me up.
Excellent advice as well
Thank you. I have limited time to work out, but want to make it as effective as possible and this really helps. Have a great day!
Glad I found your channel. It's refreshing to see someone not peddling gimmicky workout routines. Basics are always best. Good stuff 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
what makes you fun to watch is you take time to edit your videos to make them look silly and fun. unlike other youtubers you have good content AND its entertaining while you explain the good stuff instead of the same boring stuff. keep up the good work. 1M coming for you soon
Thank you man I really REALLY appreciate it!!!! Lets do this
Just found your channel, 43yo started weightlifting the last 8 months 1st time being consistent. So many shoulder mistakes. Great video💪💪
How you been making out? Gaining?
I started gymming 3 months ago and I came across your channel about 2 weeks in. Your videos are very informative and helped a lot with my progress. Thank you.
16yr weightlifter here, Seriously fantastic advice on DB lateral raise exercise.
Great video Jonni! These tips are super useful. Question for you... have you ever tried Next Level Diet? I got a muscle build up meal plan from them that's worked wonders for me.
Oh yeah brah?
Thank you so much I was confused about shoulder workouts & setting up properly your video really helped bro
Love how you have the split screen for different views of the movement. Great video!
WORST:
1 - 0:40 behind the neck press
2 - 1:55 upright row
3 - 2:42 cuban press
BEST:
1 - 4:37 smith/ machine shoulder press
2 - 7:32 lateral raise
3 - 10:26 incline db reverse fly
Great demonstration. The best I’ve ever hit my side delts were one side at a time . Slightly leaning one shoulder into a wall . Seems to fire those sides up way better than anything else
I hope more people watch you. I have a background of physical fitness and you explained everything very well! Excellent video.
Thank you, Jonni. I tore muscle so i am waiting to heal, but I am looking for videos to stay motivated. I appreciate your work.
That’s rough brother. Keep watching, and save your favourites !
Good info... Pushing fit fifthy, so definitely can relate to the movements that lead to injury. I do a few of what you recommend, but for some reason seated dips best workout my shoulders given known injuries and mobility. Point is, all of us age. The less injury you sustain early on the better you will age. Some of you will be Fit 70; 50 ain't 50 no more. Believe that.
I've had four shoulder ops, the behind the neck stuff, even squatting that way is really not a comfortable experience for me, but the way I am naturally and the way I train my shoulders are the best part of my physique aesthetically even though they are in terms of strength my weakest area, I do however train my shoulders lightly every time I work out just to get them ready to go, stretched and the blood pumping.
Great tips! Motivated me to get a late night session in and target those muscles 💪🏽 appreciate you🙏🏽
I really appreciate how well you explain the form of the exercises!
New sub here! It only took one clip. Can’t wait to dig into all your clips moving forward. Haven’t touched the iron in 4 yrs, (brother passed, life happened, kids etc etc ) I’m getting psyched to finally get the motivation to get back to it. Thanks homie, keep pounding. From one stranger to the next I appreciate your channel. 🙏🏼
good luck brotherman us post reminded me s bit of myself. four years ago my best friend and lifting partner passed and I became a single father with four kids and I'm just getting back into things. this my first clip I've watched of his and subscribed as well. great tips and motivation Big Blessings to u and kids. 💪🙌
Great videos, just one thing on behind neck press, I feel it’s a great exercise , I have little to no cartilage and had very bad shoulder mobility in my left shoulder, then started doing behind the neck press with light now heavy weight, and all I can say is that my mobility has increased a lot and so has strength, putting myself in a weak position has strengthen the shoulders, and sqauting with my knees so far over my toes and my knees are better then they have ever been
Its something very genuine and real about you. I respect it. Bout to subscribe
Thank you for your straightforward advice.
Everywhere on bodybuild YT is "stop doing it like this" "no you're doing it wrong" "you got it right but you should do this also" "nobody does this secret technique" 💀
Brooooo this man is so FUNNY yo. My favorite channel 🔥 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Appreciate the support brother!!! 🙏
Great video my dude! So many people are focused on super setting everything and adding in so much to their routines when really “less is more” 💪 All these exercises like the Cuban Press just creates so much extra that isn’t needed
Thanks for this, I try to isolate shoulders but there is so much I get bogged down with so many suggestions. Your channel is great, nice one Jonni 👍
I would like to see a video with alternative movements. Like if u can’t do it this way because of mobility issues or disabilities then do it this way. Or maybe a video the bare beginnings for people that are on day one who has never trained before, what should they do? You just explain things so well and I learn so much from them. You keep me inspired to improve my training. There just aren’t a lot of videos for people just getting into it and I know u could inspire those people too. Thanks so much for making great content ❤
Stay natural and stay alive
Steroids are extremely beneficial and crucial for a good health. Knowledge is power.
First time I’ve seen you. Your delivery is awesome. Perfect 👍
Never heard of you. This is the first video I've seen of you. I love how you incorporated humor into the lesson. I am subscribed now, and look forward to more of your videos.
I’ve been a body builder for 25 years, and there is no wrong or right. If it works for you, then go right on..
Finaly someone who said it
That is the fact. I don,t know why many trainers come up with all this
But do you feel certain workouts cause injury more than others and shouldn’t be done?
There 100% are optimal exercises. Risk vs reward, emg tests, etc. gatekeeping fitness isn’t good, but it helps absolutely no one to say “oh whatever you works for you then.” Especially if they are beginners. If you get big and stay healthy using non optimal exercises then you are getting to good places in spite of your selections, not because of them
Yea I hate when people use progress of those that have gone before them and through their own personal trials and errors to help better others wanting to learn. Why on earth would you tell a younger version of yourself that there’s a faster and better and safer way to get the results that took you 10-20 years and the knowledge you’ve accrued over a quarter of a century?
Peace. For my personal confirmation, I am glad you posted this. Since I don’t have a build like yours, or of a “hulkamaniac,” people at my gym did not take my advice seriously when I humbly used to tell them about their improper lifting techniques. Thanks for sharing.
How are you doing with the sportbike track days? I’m sure you’re improving exponentially.
lol, everyone likes taking unsolicited tips from a random at the gym...
Word...for sure. 🤣
Thanks for sharing your expertise. All the best.
Dude your content has gotten wayyy better, this is a great video!
I'm pretty sure you're right for most people but that worked out literally pops my shoulder more than any other workout And as I always say listen to your body not other people
Great presentation!
My surgeon told me not to do lateral raises, due to rotatoe cuff injuries. Wonder if you can suggest an alternative? Could lateral pull-down of the same range of motion (using cabled weights over pulleys) give a similar benefit without risk to rotator cuff?
Thanks!
Literally the upright row with less weight. Check out RP's barbell shoulder video for an excellent routine that protects and actually develops all your shoulder muscles, unlike the frontloaded exercises shown in this video.
Great video your one of the few people who describes the feelings of the exercises.
You have a great way of explaining everything. Thank you!
Hey Jonni, great video (getting boring repeating myself now!)
I'd be really interested in finding out your opinion on how often should we utilise 'beyond failure' techniques such as rest pause, drop sets, etc.
Keep up the great work! 👍
Hey great video idea!!!! Ill add it to the list 🙏🙏
@@JonniShreve awesome thank you, I've learnt so much on the number of hard sets to do. That video would take my training to the next level!
@@JonniShreve yes that is a great idea to hear what you got to say
Smart, humoruos, simple advices! Great motivator, thank you soo much. New sub from Croatia, EU!
I love how you explain everything, thank you, I'm a thin 56 year old, just want to get a little toned, definitely will be trying to do this the way you showed us!
