Grinding Filling Fairing and Priming a Fibreglass Boat Hull | Healey Boat Restoration Part 6

- In this video we turn the boat back over and begin the process of prepping the hull for paint. That involves grinding off the old gel coat, fairing the bottom of the boat. Filling it with fairing compound and doing several different sanding operations to get the boat back to a nice fair shape ahead of the paint topcoat.
Here we look through the range of products that are used within the process including West System epoxy thickened with 402 milled glass fibres, 404 high density filler and 407 low density filling and fairing compound. We prime the boat with Epifanes high build epoxy primer.
In the next video we will be doing the final preparation and application for topcoat paint. I will also show my method for casting an epoxy pad in order to shim the prop shaft strut for installation and alignment within the boat.

Always a learning experience for me !!! … thanks , Captain Dan !!! … btw , love your full color Epifanes advertisement on the back of my new Wooden Boat magazine !!!
Another great job sorting the bottom of the boat out, a great deal elbow grease, time and patience, has gone into this, must've taken many, many hours of sanding and filling, well done for doing the job to a high standard and not cutting corners👍👍🙂
This is a great step by step video. Thanks!
Outstanding craftsmanship! Thanks for sharing all the details. Very informative.
Thank you for sharing. This was helpful to me.
Lots of elbow work. Thanks for the vid
and shoulders... arms... legs... it all aches doing fairing work 😫
Fantastic well worth the wait thanks
Always brilliant, Dan. Really appreciate this, as I’m about to begin the bottom paint process on my little 12’ skiff
Best of luck. I hope it is warmer in your shop than it is here at the moment. I am waiting forever for things to dry right now!
@@DanLeeBoatbuilding I’m in north Texas and I’m having the same issue!
Great narration to explain the process. Looking real good!!!
Is there a fast curing body filler you are particularly fond of?
You used an end stage polyester filler over epoxy products on the bottom. How well does that stick to epoxy?
Fine for small cosmetic areas providing the surface is sufficiently keyed first.
