Now that was a good demonstration . I am a retired carpenter getting into kayaking. So learning. Im going to get a large PFD and try this.
This is my favorite self rescue technique. The water where I live (Pacific Northwest) is very cold, even in summer, and this is the quickest way to get out of it unless you have a bombproof roll, which most of us don't in sea kayaks. (You have on average 5 minutes or less before the fingers won't grip and it goes rapidly downhill from there).
I look at those teaching the use of paddle floats and I think to myself. "I don't want to spend all of that time blowing that thing up."
Just bombproof that damn roll! It's so easy with sea kayak you can do it in slow mo with two fingers ^_^
For guys like me using cheap plastic kayaks... the manufacturer placed foam blocks in the bow and stern for some floatation and it dawned on me as you were finding a ballence point to drain the water that any of my 4 kayaks may or may not float level.... I think I need to go swimming and figure this out before I'm a 1/4 mile from shore contemplating abandoning my kayak.

I have this bag and love it. The zipper isnt a full length zipper but the bag is a great summer bag. Very soft and comfortable. Light and packs down small. A great affordable bag . Happy with my purchase.

Good video. Thanks. I have the same paddle, which I made from a cedar 2x4. Someone in a nearby kayak asked, "what is the paddle, a stick?" I let him him try it and he was asking where to get one.
I just finished building my Cape Falcon F1 and tried wet entries. I found that the paddle float technique works very well with the F1, at least in calm conditions. I didn't notice any difference to doing this with plastic kayaks. The only difference is with the paddle - since a Greenland paddle is skinnier than a Euro paddle, the float tends to slide off when only one chamber is inflated; better inflate both chambers and the float will stick to the paddle.

Thank you so much! I am looking into buying a Skin on Frame Kayak and this was my biggest worry! Everyone kept telling me I NEED float bags or the Kayak will sink!
Try practicing this in rough water and wind that could cause you to capsize. But of course have a friend or two to help when you find it impossible to do it alone. And be sure that the wind is blowing towards a nearby shore in case you all end up in the water unable to get back in your boats.
Hi Frank, I can do this in a 30mph wind with 5 foot wind chop, but I can also do any other self rescue in those conditions as well, because I've practiced it enough that it's second nature. My experience from 20 years of being a paddling instructor is that most real world self rescues of any type fail due to lack of practice, and lack of fitness.

Thanks for this video. I'm kind of new to Kayaking. Already stepped up from a 10' pelican to a Wilderness system 16'. I can't get water in my right ear so I have to be good at anything I do on the water. I'm impressed that you made this in FRIDGET conditions. Not sure where you are But it looks cold. I hope I don't have to use this info But I'm glad to know it. I'm in Southwest Florida. I'm going to practice this in the intercoastal water way. Most of my kayaking is in Gator waters. Not going to practice there. lol. Thanks again. Be safe
Great information! I don't have a dry suit so I'll wait until next summer to try this technic. Also another way to not lose your paddle is to use a leash. Would hate to be out on one of the Great Lakes & lose it.
On a sunny day I've seen a guy who had a open top kayak paddle out 300 yards along a ocean rock pier and his kayak sunk when 2 foot waves started push water into his kayak... he was so confident in himself that he wore no life jacket and nearly drowned trying to swim to the nearby rock pier which was like 50 feet away from him. Don't be a dumbo, wear a life jacket every time while you kayak and don't underestimate nature.

Watching this after I found my self in this situation for the first time today. I filled with water after climbing back in from the side after a swim. Lost all my gear, didn’t have a life jacket or anyone with me and had to tow that heavy, water filled kayak about 300 yards to an embankment. Exhausting and barley made it

I invented the paddle float counterbalance which is an add on to your paddle float . It is a 3 liter bag that attaches onto the underside of your paddle float and fills with water. Now it is almost impossible to capsize to the other side. When you are in the boat flip your paddle float over and all the water drains out of some meshing..I gave the idea away to North Water for a free one and they discontinued marketing it after a couple years for some reason ??

Very nice video. What about if the kayak is heavy because of things and can not be lifted?
This is a good demonstration with clear explanations and the limitations stressed i.e. unladen craft and highly buoyant PFD and dry suit. Like all useful, practised techniques, it can be made to look deceptively easy and could thereby be misleading. The question "Why?" seldom seems to be asked. Why is it necessary to empty water from the kayak? [Good buoyancy design should make emptying unnecessary. The craft should be capable of being controlled with the seating swamped] Why is there no permanent, solid, end buoyancy? [All small water craft should be unsinkable and incapable of becoming sunk at one end (vertical position).]
Why is there no lateral buoyancy? [Lateral buoyancy provides stability in swamped condition. Hannes Lindemann had inflated sponsons in his Klepper for his solo Atlantic crossing in 1956 (and also Captain Romer in 1926).] I cannot see this recovery working, with that kayak as it is, in a Force 5 wind and two to three foot waves.
Hi Peter, I agree with a lot of your points. This is a good self rescue for an unloaded lightweight kayak in certain conditions. I took out the float bags for the purpose of the demonstration to show how quickly the water can come out using this technique. As a lifelong sea kayaker I am generally skeptical of rescues because in most cases where a rescue would be truly needed this situation would prevent any sort of rescue from working and so personally I tend to focus on judgment and paddling skill as being the larger portion of my overall safety strategy. That said it’s important to know and practice all sorts of rescues. Lateral buoyancy is not typically compatible with modern sea kayaking but I don’t have any problem with it in theory! @@capefalconkayak Hi, You did indeed make the limitations of the method clear (calm conditions + empty kayak + good PFD) and other comments from viewers confirm that that message was taken on board. I guess the principle behind my thinking is that if a worst case scenario is catered for, in the buoyancy design, then all other lesser situations will be a breeze. From all the evidence it seems, for decked kayaks, that the buoyancy design configuration of 1) solid, end buoyancy 2) minimum volume cockpit i.e. low Cockpit Intake Test measurement and 3) continuous (confluent) hull space, confers a superior safety performance to the vast majority of conventional designs. In the case of skin on frame construction it would be more difficult to emulate that performance but nevertheless it could be aspired to. For all the data see my Windslicer website and, in particular, the unpublished Winning report and the "Hatches Off" recovery method. I think it is great that people like you take the trouble to do all the work to post these excellent CZcams videos. Thank you for that.

This shit's hardcore and I never really knew you could empty your boat without a second person in a second boat. Whenever I did it with second person, they'd just balance my boat across their theirs and empty it, then put it back in the water for me.
Doing this on your own, seems so hardcore.
You will need hard core if you, like me, prefer to go kayaking alone.

I would have liked more explanation on the emptying process. I've tried this several times and have only ever been successful when i was sitting on a paddle that had floats on at both ends, giving me the needed boost. Synchronized swimmers and water polo players might manage OK though.
I think the dry suit adds boyancy but i maybe wrong
I've been able to do this successfully with a dry suit on, but I think it would be a lot harder without the extra bouancy.

Interesting how each person has their preference on getting back into the kayak. I just hop on the back deck from the side, and then swing my leg into the cockpit...twist around and Bobs your Uncle.

Can't find rough water to demo this? Go to a bulkhead where the waves are bouncing of the seawall and someone can film it easily.
Do you think its possible with a PE Kayak, or is that too heavy? I tried it once, but didnt remember all of the advices and failed hard. And i didnt have a Dry Suit, tried it just with a Swimvest.
