  • Welcome back to J.P. BBQ guys. #jpbbq #weber #webermods I got this Weber Smokey Mountain from a good friend. So I figured I would go ahead and modify it, just to make it a little more comfortable to use. Added a cool touch handle to the lid making opening easier especially with the lid hinge kit. Also change out the vent handles and put these really cool black handles on the vents and last i put a lavalock gasket kit on it. All I can say that it looks fantastic and I am really having a good time doing this. Can't wait to put these mods to work and make my first ever cook on a fully customized smokey mountain. Hope this video helps you guys and I appreciated the support. I hope you enjoy the video as much as I did making it. Check out my website if your interested in any of my products that I use. JP - great videos vato. I did many of those mods to mine. I did the cool touch knobs on the vents, I did spring handles that you did on the front but I did them where you did the cheap handles. I did the hinges lid and I replaced my front door with the thick stainless door from Cajun Bandit. You should check that door out btw. Lastly I did a gasket but I did the Lavalock braided gasket. The braided gasket works but it sucks because I struggle to get my top grate out. Those mods you did will really step up your WSMs performance. Nice job brother.

      Hey there Rick I appreciate you commenting and watching my videos. The side handles i got from Home Depot, they are just inexpensive barn gate handles. i think i paid 2.99 for each, they work great in helping move the weber around and for taking the center part off. Most definetly will look into getting the stainless door too. did not know they made a braided gasket from lava lock thanks for the tips. It is most definitely a game changer adding these mods, I had so much fun doing it. Thanks again for watching.

    Nice mods. Here's a tip for removing the burrs from freshly drilled holes. If you can get to the back side of the hole, use the unibit . It will clean up the hole without having to use another tool.

      Thanks for watching and commenting Tracy, appreciate the compliment. The 14.5 and 18.5 inch WSM does not come with a handle on the front lip only on top. The only one that has a handle on the front lip in the 22.5 WSM. Thanks again.

  • @Tecknut75

    Nice video Brother, but I have just one question? Why did you install the gasket material to the cooker it's self instead of just applying it to the door itself? Did the silicone smear on the unit and have to be removed after it dry's? I'm subscribed.
    ✌️

      @JPBBQ  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey there Frank, appreciate you watching and commenting. Great question, thats what i should of done is apply it to the door itself. Probably would of looked better. And I speak in past tense cause in my latest video I installed the lava lock quick coal door. Thanks again

  • @DynamicJon

    Have you thought about the stainless steel access panel? I've heard it seals better too.

    • @JPBBQ
      @JPBBQ  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey there Jon, appreciate you watching and commenting. I have thought about it and my understanding if forms a better seal in conjunction with a gasket. I’ve been looking at one called lavalock quick coal door mod. I would really like to get that one cause then i can modify the opening wider and make loading coal easier at least that my understanding. We’ll see what happens I may get that mod in the near future. Thanks again.

      I have the Lavalock Door mod coming for my WSM 18. All the videos I’ve seen on that mod make the extra money a better investment than another door replacement. And no gasket. I also have the gasket kit coming so thanks for the video so I saw it done before I try mine. Nice mods all around!

    So your wsm is the 18"?? Thinkn of buying 1that I saw @ lowes.. It's a 18" as well ; but the 22" wsm did cross my mind tho.. I like the mods u've done to ur wsm.. If I get the wsm then I'm more than likely to order custom parts like u have.. Hinge for lid , side & front handles, casters, gasket, & vent handles..

    • @JPBBQ
      @JPBBQ  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes, My WSM is the 18 inch. It was a gifted to me, so I had little choice on the the size. I think If I was to buy one, I would most definitely get the 22 inch. The modifications make it so much easier to use and plus makes it look cool. Thanks again for watching and commenting Dewayne.

      @@JPBBQ whether I get the 18" r 22" wsm ; I wld like to order the items u hav on ur wsm... I really like those black knobs/handles that u hav on ur 4 vents.. I'm thinkn of getn the side table

      Thanks Dewayne, I wanna say that most of the parts on the outside of the smoker I got from bbqsmokermods.com you may find some on amazon as well. The charcoal baskets I got from arborfab.com and from Greg over on his CZcams channel called The woodshed smoke and bbq with slow hand czcams.com/channels/TqNttYqqU3_npkEmPYXAQg.html hope it helps and thanks again.

    Would the Weber cover fit on there with the cool touch handle and hinge installed?

    • @JPBBQ
      @JPBBQ  Před 4 lety +2

      good question. the cover did fit with the side handles and the hinge but once i put on the front cool touch handle that was it. I went out an bought the Weber cover for the 22. thanks for asking

      @@JPBBQ just so you an other’s know, I ended up clipping vice grips on each end of the baseplate (the part that bolts to the smoker, to not bend the arms) and was able to use the leverage to bend it by hand. Once I bent it to be flush with the smoker I then bent the arms in to still fit the rod and spring. Worked pretty well and took maybe 5-10mins

    How did you remove the existing handle to install the new handle?

    • @JPBBQ

      This version did not come with the front handle on the lid. I have seen some with insulated grips on the vents but besides that it did not have one.

    Hey JP, ordered the LavaLock gasket and they sent me the self stick gasket. What do you think of the self stick gasket?

    • @JPBBQ
      @JPBBQ  Před 3 lety +1

      I would email them to let them know they sent the wrong thing. Self stick probably works just as good, but I’ve never tried it. Thanks for watching.

    Hi JP,
    New to the WSM..mine's (a 22") actually on back order pending delivery from Lowe's...early fathers day gift from the kids...I'm super stoked! Pun intended. But I was wondering...after watching a lot of these wsm vids here on you tube it seems that it tends to leak noticeably more from the door...now I'm a, if it ain't broke don't fix it guy, but that oem door definately seems faulty right out of the factory....Now here is my question....is it really necessary to add seals to all contact points of the wsm to get good smoking action or is just get a better tighter fitting charcoal door enough to provide a good seal during cook?

    • @JPBBQ
      @JPBBQ  Před 4 lety +1

      hey there John appreciate you watching my videos and commenting. What I did originally was bought a lavalok gasket kit from bbqsmokermods.com and it works perfect I believe they sell them on amazon too amzn.to/3fzraZI I am looking at replacing the door with a new mod called lavalok quick coal door mod and make the access opening bigger on my 18 inch. But if all you want is get a good seal that lavalok gasket kit is all you need. hope that helps. thanks again.

      Yeah I agree, only smoke loss area is the door for me. Once I installed the door gasket she's nice and tight.
      Once you get a few good smokes it builds up a residue that seals up nicely
