I was sat at home absolutely panicking about making 20 copies of a DVD for work, then I found this video! Didn't know that my mac had this kind of useful software already installed, and this video was really really useful! you've saved my bacon, thanks!!
Thanks Matias. Your step by step instructions in creating copies is the most simple instructions that is available out there. Nothing like it. The best!
Thanks very much for the great tutorial. Your instructions are down to earth and easy to follow. I am an older guy who is not good with technology and always have to rely on others for help regarding these issues. I spent the entire weekend asking others how to copy a DVD on my new apple laptop and nobody could help me; not even the Apple website does a good job as you did on your tutorial. I look forward checking your other tutorials. HenyF
Thank you so much!!! After an hour of waisted disks I finally went to you tube and found your video! And step by step got my project done! Thank you!!!!
Matias, your video is the best "How To" for helping people make copies of DVD's. I tried many ways to do this task, but most of them were outdated, wrong, or confusing. For any user with OS X 10, your video is the one to watch. Well done!
This can take up to an hour and a half or two hours depending on your computer speed but, it is worth it. Just do it overnight. You get an exact replica of your DVD, with menus. The downside is each disc can take up to 4.5 gigs on your HD. Hard drives are cheap these days. It's your decision. I have several camera DVDs that I bought 10 years ago and I was getting worried about how long they would still be playable. DVD's don't last forever. This solved that problem. Thank you, Matias.
Thank you so much. I had a DVD of software for Windows, following your instruction, I made .cdr file then changed extension to .iso and it worked on Windows! Saved me from buying external DVD drive.
It became necessary to copy a DVD again recently and I'm really glad you made this video as it's been a long time and you jogged my memory how to do this. You can see I commented 8 years ago directly below. (Time moving too fast). Be well and thanks. Phil
You are very welcome. Glad to hear it helped. This is definitely the easiest way to do that. Remember, if you are ripping copy protected movies you need to use a different process. For that check out my other tutorial on using RipIt
Hello Shauna. Thank you for the feedback. In order to write between 4.7 and 8.5 GB to a DVD you will need a dual layer DVD burner and dual layer (DL) DVD writeable disc. Both are very inexpensive. Anything larger than that will require a writeable blu-ray disc.
This process created a dmg and/or a compressed file (m4v, mp4, etc). You can place them anywhere you want including an external drive just like any other file.
I love that people like you are so willing to make tutorial videos for us. Its awesome! Thank you. I know its just ripping a DVD, but today Ive dealt with a lot of douchebags and things like this remind me that not everyone sucks, lol :)
Thanks Matias As others have said very clear and easy to follow, I was wondering once you copied the disk to the mac computer can you then create a mp4 instead of having to burn it onto another dvd? Cheers John
Absolutely. The disk image does take up space. When you create it you select where you want to save the disk image (dmg). After you are done using it, drag it to the trash and empty the trash. That will get rid of the file and free the space up again. Thanks for watching !
@Warlion82 How would you put what in your iTunes? This tutorial is about making copies of CD and DVD media. If you have the original disc of a music album you wouldnt need to copy it to add the songs to iTunes. You would simply import the songs into iTunes.
Excellent: simple, clear, quick. However, when I got into the "make disk image" step, it told me it could not make an image of an audio or non-data CD. I've made a copy before using iTunes, but it has trouble playing for some reason. I can't say it's the iMac, and I don't know how to test. But the real thing is, what's this non-data business? In any case, I know the steps. Thanks.
awesome video. great step by step instructions. easy to follow along. everything worked great EXCEPT my video did not upload automatically to iTunes and i haven't been able to get the m4v movie to iTunes. do i have something set incorrectly? any tips. thanks so much.
@boxen76 Yep. I have had it for almost 6 years and it still rocks. I have upgraded all sorts of things. SSD for startup volume. Moved my home folder to a separate volume using an Apple raid card (8TB) plus have the Time Machine running internally. The thing is bullet proof.
@trapp2355 Were you trying to make a copy of a movie DVD or video game? If so,most of those are copy protected and cannot be duplicated in this way. I have a video posted here on how to do that using RipIt. If it ejects your DVD and CD when you insert, it can be because the media you inserted is not large enough for the disc image you made. Your combo drive is your Mac optical drive so no problems there. That is just how it is named. Make sure you have a large enough disc for your burn
you're awesome. After a few hours of headache, frustrations and downloading a few different software you're instructions is the best of them all. Thank you so much.
Thanks so much. Very simple and precise instructions. Helped me out big time. You make it very easy to understand with your clear instructions. Many thanks....
Yes. You can use this for DL Discs burned through iMovie. However, the issues you experience in your DVD player are most likely related to the DVD player itself and how well it handles that type of DL disc. So, Disc Utility will make a good copy and burn a good copy, however it may play better on some players than on others
Aahhh dude. You're so informative and explain things simply and effectively. Great step-by-step guidance. Thanks so much. Great video! My the Lord bless your efforts
Thank you for the feedback. I agree. The world is a much better place when we can all be a little bit less selfish and a little bit more helpful. I appreciate the comment and it is nice to see that the hours it takes to make these videos are helping people I haven't even met. Keep watching and I will keep posting them. Thanks again.
@kittynamedkitty If you have dual CD/DVD trays you may need to insert the blank disc in the other tray. Alternatively you may have the wrong type of blank disc (i.e. DVD-R instead of DVD+R). The last scenario is a faulty disc or CD/DVD reader
I have no idea about the disk utility before. Thanks for introducing it!! But I would like to ask if it is impossible to burn the disk with its disk status being "read only"? Thx!
Hey matias thank u for the tutorial sir, I wanna ask if I make a DVD image to burn, does it take up computer space? How do I remove it afterwards so it dont take up any computer space
This was a great video. Question this may be silly but Iam having a hard time saving a DVD of me skydiving onto my actual apple laptop would you be able to help with that?
@bakerman4444 Thats awesome. So glad it helped you out. Thats the purpose of these videos and it's nice to hear when it helps people like yourself. I take quite a bit of free time to make them and I enjoying hearing about it when it has a positive effect. Thanks for the comment.
Sorry if this is a dumb question…but when I had a PC I was always able to make a copy of a music CD. Maybe CD's have changed since then? I just bought a new CD and wanted to make a copy to play in my car and thought I could use your example to copy it. But are you saying that CD's are no longer copyable? I have an iMac with one disc slot.
Instead of clicking "DVD/Master", click on "read/write". That worked for me and I just imported the video into iMovie9 (because 10 won't let me see all of the videos I had already copied from 8mm)
Which program are you using to record your screen? I have been looking for a good software that I can do "zoon in and out" like yours and also ZOON IN when I click or stop the mouse. Like you have done in your video. Could you help me please? Thanks!
Thanks Matias for share your knowledge. After you finish your copy on a cd or dvd, how do you erase this disc images, because I'm assuming they occupy the same amount of memory you are pretending to save in to the other disc, do I'm I correct ? Thanks in advance for your answer :) (sorry because my bad English...)
You are correct. This method is more data CD's only. The easiest method to copy your music CD is to rip it in iTunes and then burn copies of it. However, consider the following: 1- you might want to up the quality of your imports (itunes-prefences-general-import settings) 2- you can only burn a playlist/album a limited number of times (I believe it is 4 or 5 times).
Actually, you are quite right about that. I've read that certain music companies are in talks with Apple offering higher quality downloads than the 256kbp we get now. Also. Macs don't have optical drives now anyway so how would I even burn a CD in the near future? Maybe I'll just listen to my CDs on the CD player for a while longer and see how things progress. Thanks.
@MrPlasticbagman12 . You are making me blush. Thank you very much for the kind words and feedback. I will try to hold on to what little is left of my Venezuelan accent as long as possible !
Thank you for your intructions.. they worked for me. I was actually going to try to download a program to burn the DVD to my laptop but that's not necessary anymore. Thanks again
@trapp2355 It could be a couple things. If you created an image disk from snow leopard for example (which is on a dual layer DVD) it would require a dual layer DVD to burn it. Some discs like snow leopard are almost 8.5 GB worth of data on a single disc. Though, that should give you a response similar to "not enough space in this media" or something like that. Also, the older your MAc (or PC for that matter) is, the dirtier your optical drive becomes and gives you errors.
you saved my life!! thank you so much! I had a deadline to meet on making my very first movie of the season of a highschool baseball team. had to make 10 copies and idvd kept messing up on me!
I don't have an internal optical drive in newer. mac (unfortunately!!) so will this somehow work with my eternal disc? Once I get an image (if I can) can I eject the original disc and insert the blank disk into the external drive and complete the process?
Hello Matias thank you 🙏🏾 for sharing this info I have a lot of movies to put in2 my Mac 💻. I have a question that hopefully you have time to answer. My prima has a eternal hard drive full of music and her son erased it all. She’d like to know if there’s a chance for her to recover that music. Many people have told her that it’s not completely gone, so the question is how can she recover this music if it’s still there?
Epie Fresquez , you can recover data from a drive you erased as long as you haven’t continued to use it and written over the old data. When you erase a drive using the basic erase or empty trash, it doesn’t actually delete the data. It simply marks it as available to write over. Use google and search for data recovery software. It’s not difficult to recover it. You will need another hard drive if equal or larger size as a recovery drive.

Hi there, i get the following error message on my mac com.apple.diskutility error 3 while the dvd is in process copying. I need help. Also can you copy a DVD+R Double Layer 8.5gb? Thanks
I was sat at home absolutely panicking about making 20 copies of a DVD for work, then I found this video! Didn't know that my mac had this kind of useful software already installed, and this video was really really useful! you've saved my bacon, thanks!!
Thank you, Matias. You're the greatest! I'm a teacher myself and I really appreciate someone who can explain things CLEARLY.
+maestrokg2 You are very welcome. :)
Thanks Matias. Your step by step instructions in creating copies is the most simple

I tried many ways to do this task, but most of them were outdated, wrong, or confusing. For any user with OS X 10, your video is the one to watch. Well done!
Thank you Paul. I try very hard to simplify the process and I am grateful for the feedback. Thank you for the support.
Really, yours is by far better than the many hours of research i have made. Keep making these videos! Thank you a million!

Thank you Sir! Got some DVD's of my Son's BCT graduation & this is just what I needed. Subscribed
Matias! So great to see you on youtube. I was your student at UM around 2003! Larry
+Larry Villanueva Hey Larry! Of course I remember. You lived on Lincoln Rd. Great to hear from you. I hope you are doing well.
Simple. Straight to the point. Easy to follow. Awesome job man. Thank you so much !
Ditto!

allextablle you are very welcome. I’m glad that helped.
Thanks for such clear and professional tutorial without all that jazz in back ground.Keep up the good work friend.
just wanted to say thank u so much!!!! have been trying to copy a couple dvd back up files and i couldn't, until i saw your video. Really helpful!
Thanks for the compliment and the feedback. I appreciate it.
This process created a dmg and/or a compressed file (m4v, mp4, etc). You can place them anywhere you want including an external drive just like any other file.

@AlexanderconJames Thank you. I appreciate the time you took to post this. I will be posting more soon so check back often.
Thanks Matias
As others have said very clear and easy to follow, I was wondering once you copied the disk to the mac computer can you then create a mp4 instead of having to burn it onto another dvd?
Cheers John
You are extremely clear in your instruction with no tangential talk. Thank you.
Thank you ! I appreciate the post. I too dislike when the person running the tutorial mumbles for an hour :)
Absolutely. The disk image does take up space. When you create it you select where you want to save the disk image (dmg). After you are done using it, drag it to the trash and empty the trash. That will get rid of the file and free the space up again. Thanks for watching !

Why can't every tutorial on youtube be as clear and simple as this ?!?!? You should do a tutorial on doing tutorials ! People need to learn from you !
Dude why couldn't everyone other video on here have just said it like you did. Thanks plenty you really helped me out alot!!!
You're a cool genius!!! Easy to follow every single step- it made my day this tutorial.
THANK YOU

You are a "Genio" not too many people have the ability to teach, you definitely do. Congrats
Excellent, I was having such a hard time trying to do this, no one knew exactly how to do it. Very easy to follow video, Thanks.
Thank you! Your video is so helpful. It was very clear and I was able to follow your instructions step by step. Awesome!

you're awesome. After a few hours of headache, frustrations and downloading a few different software you're instructions is the best of them all. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the compliment! I try hard to make videos in the way I wish someone had explained it to me. I appreciate the feedback
Thank you Matias. You instructions worked great and the best part is I didn't have to buy any software!
Thanks so much. Very simple and precise instructions. Helped me out big time. You make it very easy to understand with your clear instructions. Many thanks....
Are you trying to copy a feature film? Also, what video target do you have selected under preferences?

Will this process work for newer iMacs like the 2019 model with the latest Big Sur?
Thanks! This is very helpful. Question: Can this file .cdr be uploaded into Final Cut Pro X? Do I need to convert it in some way?
I have no idea about the disk utility before. Thanks for introducing it!!
But I would like to ask if it is impossible to burn the disk with its disk status being "read only"?
Thx!
Hey matias thank u for the tutorial sir, I wanna ask if I make a DVD image to burn, does it take up computer space? How do I remove it afterwards so it dont take up any computer space
Thanks a lot! I knew Apple had a solution to my "problem", you just gave me a direction! Thank you big time! Keep up :)
Thank you sir. I appreciate the feedback. Stay tuned as I will be posting some new videos very soon.
Thank you. I appreciate the feedback. I'm glad you found it useful.
Great demo. Not rushed and very clear. thank you Matias.
@TheZizzer83 You are very welcome. Glad you liked.
Thx for the vid! What do I do if I get a pop that says, unable to burn. The double layer transition point has been specified and can't be changed.
This was a great video. Question this may be silly but Iam having a hard time saving a DVD of me skydiving onto my actual apple laptop would you be able to help with that?

Thanks for the Tutorial Matias, easy to follow, clear and precise saved me so much time and expense.
Thanks Alan. Glad it helped you.
This was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you VERY MUCH. You're awesome.
Excellent. Thanks for the feedback. I work hard to make these as easy as possible so I appreciate the comments.
Thank you for this very easy to understand tutorial 🙌🏼
Thanks so much for posting this how-to video. Your video was right on, straight to the point and clear.
Fantastic Mat. very well explained. Easy to follow and when i did as you instructed it worked 1st time - Ta.
Thanks. My pleasure. Glad it helped. I will be adding a bunch more soon.
Thats great to hear. That is perfect example for using this solution. Glad to hear it helped you. Keep watching.
I got an Error 3 when I tried it. Can you do an updated video maybe? Since this is 10 years old, the OS is different.
thank you!
Instead of clicking "DVD/Master", click on "read/write". That worked for me and I just imported the video into iMovie9 (because 10 won't let me see all of the videos I had already copied from 8mm)
10years????
10 years ! You just wasted my time. Take this of youtube.
10 years now
Which program are you using to record your screen? I have been looking for a good software that I can do "zoon in and out" like yours and also ZOON IN when I click or stop the mouse. Like you have done in your video. Could you help me please? Thanks!
Thanks Matias for share your knowledge.
After you finish your copy on a cd or dvd, how do you erase this disc images, because I'm assuming they occupy the same amount of memory you are pretending to save in to the other disc, do I'm I correct ? Thanks in advance for your answer :)
(sorry because my bad English...)
THANKYOU SO MUCH!! This has changed my life for ever :D
Does this apply to CD Games? to burn the disk to the computer so you dont need to insert the disc everytime?
You are very welcome. Thank you for the feedback
I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Your no nonsense explanation is truly helpful. You have been a great help! Thank you, Jim
Thank you sir. I appreciate that. I enjoy teaching things in a way I wish they had been explained to me.
Thanks so much. This was very helpful. Even after 8 years!
Thank you for your intructions.. they worked for me. I was actually going to try to download a program to burn the DVD to my laptop but that's not necessary anymore. Thanks again
Thank you! The video was very easy to follow.
@trapp2355 It could be a couple things. If you created an image disk from snow leopard for example (which is on a dual layer DVD) it would require a dual layer DVD to burn it. Also, the older your MAc (or PC for that matter) is, the dirtier your optical drive becomes and gives you errors.
Great demo, the only thing I would add is to remove the original DVD once it has finished coping. Well done
you saved my life!! thank you so much!

Hi, do you know how to make the tracks' titles actually appearing on any CD players when you play the CD?
Hi there, i get the following error message on my mac com.apple.diskutility error 3
while the dvd is in process copying. I need help. Also can you copy a DVD+R Double Layer 8.5gb?
Thanks
