    I was 10 years old in 1955 in Southern Oregon when my dad, an SP signal maintainer came over to the house and told me to grab my coat as I was going for a ride. He took me the 100 yards to the depot and boosted me up into the arms of the engineer. I rode 25 miles in a steam engine sitting between the legs of the engineer and blowing the crossings as we traveled. When it was over and my folks picked me up, my dad said some day you'll realize how special that trip was. How right he was!

    Great video as always. Saw 4501 at TVRM last May with a friend of mine as we were both in town for a friend's wedding. Wished we rode the train and seen more of the sites in Chattanooga but me and my friend got to see a running steam locomotive for the 1st time. The mechanical stoker was from Canadian National 5288 that is on display at TVRM.

      @southern2716 Před 2 lety +1

      It's actually surplus from China. However, the design is identical to the Worthington SA-3 system that many of 4501's sisters received when upgraded. The HT stoker (though made in Canada) and Sellers SR injector are historically accurate to the upgraded Ms-class engines.

      @@southern2716 do you know why they put an automatic Stoker on the 4501? From what I remember when she was built she was built as a hand fired engine! From what I see, though it was a stupid decision to put an automatic Stoker on her! I can see if the making 100 mile trip with her but from what I know she’s basically trapped at the museum and only making trips mean at up to Summerville once in a while

    • @southern2716
      @southern2716 Před 11 měsíci

      @@rudycarlson8245 most of its sister engines were rebuilt with stokers. Since it was on a low speed, low tonnage line in its later years it never recieved one. The HT that was installed during the restoration is identical to the ones installed on the other 4500 class engines. It would still be on display if 21st Century Steam not happened. The only reason that the engine was rebuilt was to run on the mainline, hence the addition of the stoker. It's nice to have running to Summerville. Not really needed on the local, but the fireman still has the ability to handfire if they so desire. 630 is the preferred engine on the local, anyway.

    I rode behind 4501 just 2 days ago. Crew was friendly enough to give me a cab tour at the shops. It was a great experience! Although both me and my dad both wonder how they fit 4501 and it’s 3 cars on the wye at the depot. I guess they use every last inch of that wye to turn the train around, or maybe my measurements are just off, but either way, the guys at TVRM really know what they’re doing.

    Nice video I enjoyed it, I've thankfully been on several steam cab rides on on the Little River Railroad in Southern Michigan. The other was in Dollywood the very best narrow gauge climbing a grade out of the park. Now God Bless Dolly Parton she's great singer and Christian, but the dollywood paint job on the tenders of the locomotives didn't get it for me. However once to over look that the 1943 Alaskan locomotives are kept up very well mechanically in the shops as well in appearance. 20 years has gone by but I will not ever forget these two cab rides. When your pulling up grad we that locomotive is parking big time in the cab. I shot video of all of it inside and out. The Little River is also a great operation running the smallest standard gauge Pacific ever built. Beautiful restored locomotive.

    By the way the reason the engine has two water glasses is because of what happened on the Gettysburg railroad back in 1995.
    The new rules and regulations that came out of that accident called for two water glasses to be put on steam engines so crews could still monitor the water levels in the boiler if one of them failed.
    czcams.com/video/4Ovhx-fMt1I/video.html this film was made soon after the accident and is actually very interesting

    Clearly there will be railroad names, titles and terminology to all the parts of a steam train. Was wondering if in the drivers and fireman's (person's) engine cabin if directly in front of the 'firebox' where coal was shovelled in there was a stout iron plate area called 'the plate'? Thanks
