  • During the American Civil War, between 5,000 and 10,000 civilian women offered their services as nurses and hospital administrators. Follow the story of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a battlefield surgeon, American feminist, suffragist, prisoner of war, and accused spy. Dr. Walker remains the only woman ever to receive the Medal of Honor.

Western MARYLANDER here! Also a former US Navy Nurse Corps scholarship student in college! I am very interested in Civil War history! I visit both Antietam and Gettysburg Battlefields frequently. I learned that 8 women dressed as soldiers actually fought in that battle! The single bloodiest one day battle of the Civil War. Over 23,000 died on September 17,1862/ Sharpsburg,MD. 7 fought for the UNION / two as young as 15 years of age. One dead CONFEDERATE woman was found on the Cornfield by a Massachusetts Burial party! History many people never learned! 🇩🇪🇨🇭🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙Every December 23,000 Luminary bags are placed on Antietam Battlefield to remember the fallen!
