    Apparently the reason a sudden romance between Sakurai and Karen happened was because their actors became a couple during the show's production and I guess this was included to give their characters something to do in the finale.
    As for Michi Love herself I will never forget the episode of Toei's Spiderman she was in. She was a very memorable guest villain, one that makes you wish she became a recurring character. Someone who did appear in multiple episodes though, surprise, surprise, was Hiroshi Miyauchi.

    in Dairanger one of the main villains was a kid, said kid got killed twice in the show. JAKQ wasn't the only time a kid got explicitely killed but it was no doubt a first. I would also mention certain villains from Jetman and GoGo-V but they are aged up at a certain point of the show.

  • @sebastianarce14
    @sebastianarce14 Před 5 měsíci +17

    The serious tone of JAKQ was the reason it got low ratings, Gorenger got a lot of children viewership with its goofy monsters and colorful main cast, plus the ridiculous and extravagant fights, JAKQ, on the other hand, tried to be more serious and down to earth, maybe as an attempt to get more teenagers and adults to watch it, but probably didn't work as intended since most of the children tuned off of the show. This had happened before to Toei when they aired Kamen Rider Amazon, that show also tried to be more adult to try and give a fresh air to the declining franchise but did actually worse than the previous KR show and got cancelled at only 24 episodes. Later on the writers would find a good balance between light hearted and serious tone for their shows ofc and JAKQ and Amazon remain as examples of how not to reinvent growing franchises.

    When I watched the show, I definitely felt the disparity and the show clearly being cut into three pieces. The first is the dark spy detective kind of show that was honestly pretty dang good. The second was the lighter more kid-focused one. Which, wasn't bad, just heavy tonal whiplash. And then once Big One showed up, it was all over. The rest of the team got sidelined for the rest of the season.

    Yeah, I like JAKQ. I even just broke down and preordered their new Super Shodo figure. But, the show has major flaws due to the tonal changes.
    I mean, the original vision for JAKQ makes sense. it is similar to how Ultraman did the same thing with UltraSeven being a more serious follow up to the original Ultraman's campiness. I really wish JAKQ's original tone was kept. Hell Daichi was hurt the most here. he went from being this scientist, who died, and had the tragic "my family is dead" back story. To being an idiot that's obsessed with his looks and girls.
    It is pretty funny how history repeated itself with MMPR season 2. With the whole bringing back a popular actor from the first season to become a new white ranger. Who admittedly steals the lead role and demotes the Red Ranger.

    Just a small comment, you kept saying how you don't know how they got away with the nazi crocodile episode, but remember that this was the 70's, and Japan was always more chill with these things. The first kamen rider had a lot of nazi symbolism for the villains, and Kamen Rider X had the infamous Starfish Hitler. Even in the west at the time it was common for Captain America to fight literal nazis in the comics and stuff like that, it was only later that this sorta of thing became more taboo.

    100% agree with this assessment. jakq starts off so intersting and goes places you really dont expect, but come the obvious attempts to claw back the child audience it heads off track. its still enjoyable but definately not for the same reasons which puts me and many others off of it. what really made the show fumble i feel was the clear lack of communication between what ishinomori pro and toei people wanted the show to be; when it started the ball was clearly in ishinomrois court, but toei seemed to just kinda assume they were getting a goranger style super marketable project hence all the really cool toys with even cooler stop motion animated commercial. ishinomroi wanted a police procedural show with a superhero twist, toei wanted gorannger 2. when the viewing figures came back toei simply went into panic mode and stacked on the changes that ultimately hurt the show more than it helped. this is a sad prelude the how a lot of tokusatsu media ends up in the same way for having the audacity to appeal to an older target audience leading to it undergoing major changes before being unceremoniously cut short.
    end of the say tho, who knows where sentai would (or perhaps wouldnt) be without jakq, if nothing else its a strangely classy show that exemplifies some of my favorite things about this ever so experimental era of toku media. there are certainly better sentai shows, but most certainly worse ones too.
    oh right, about ninja captor, toei considering it a sentai was simply due to people creating various late 70s publications making the incredibly silly mistake that a show about a team of people who transform into multi colored heroes with unique vehicles battling an evil organization was totally not a sentai show. this didnt really last long, but it was still a prevailing misconception that ninja captor was actually a sentai show all along in the english speaking fanbase throughout the 2000s, despite it never being officially considered so.

    • @KumaLink
      @KumaLink  Před 5 měsíci +3

      At the end of the day, JAKQ's failure was probably for the best, since it led Toei to rethink the Sentai series and eventually get it to where it is now, but the show itself still suffered.

    (Note my version has goranger,Jakq,and j fever as a trilogy because 70’s)
    Ok here the challenge of this we can’t make it too dark but we can’t make it too light hearted the title is star rangers jakq lucky aces we start at eaf or the eagle defense force fighting against crime (that’s the name) and crime is winning so what is crime? An organization that does crime but to the insanity the plans are over the top and brutality is high led by supposedly iron claw (which his claw like Freddy from nightmare of elm street) along with the other three but they have a boss that isn’t called shine he is American made villian like zedd he is called jakos the prankster he is backstory he was investing the iron regime just get away with crimes but after they fall apart jakos went desperate and experiment on himself to be stronger but turns out he went mentally insane and unpredictable like hijacking cable,explodes an plane engine,laughing gas to everyone,and has a lot of tricks their goals is spread crime has money and power and their secret goal is to revive the iron dictator so our heroes use the star grid(prototype of the morphin grid) to transform into starrnagers jakq capsules but the big bow(the big one American counterpart) is joker assistant (btw joker is way different he wears this jester outfit as with jakos his design is based on the joker design) so jakq is cyborgs that looked human they have to figure out who they are(four Boys and one girl) also they wish they are real humans also the insane episode the crocodile supports the imperial fortesss and in the end the five of them see jakos for the first time so in the final battle or episode have them fight superpower jakos with green electricity and steel claws they pull all the stops but they are too strong until they built the cannon but they both defeat steel claws and the jakos and jakos barely lives because of the green electricity but in the end jakos got arrested the end (sorry it was over the place but it was basic idea if they do an American adaptation in a messy all over the place summary)
