- In today's video I show you guys my new tow rig: a 2002 Toyota Sequoia which I picked up for only $2000! Its has 220,000 miles and a rebuilt title but has a 2UZ V8, 4WD, and much more. Of course, we can't leave it stock, so we immediately begin modifying it. Bash bars, big wheels/tires, paint, and more!

Please hear me out: DO NOT lift this rig. Any load on the back will cause the front to raise up and I speak from experience when I say these things will chew through CV axles. Keep the stock height, but use Airlift 1000's in the rear coil springs for when you need to tow a load. The Airlift 1000s are super affordable, super easy to use, and will save you a lot of headache when towing.
lol it will chew more then cv axles
A proper lift won’t have that issue
If the option to upvote was available this DEF NEEDS an upvote
Agreed on the airlift 1000 bags. Super useful. Always run independent air lines, one to each bag.
@@HarleyHyena there are likes💀
a working toyota for $2k is always a great purchase and that V8 is so reliable you could drive it to the moon and back
Change the timing belt and water pump. Intervals for those (4.7 V8) are 100k
+1 Crazy that the ONE THING that will kill the engine wasn't addressed in the service
IDK about the lift man, you got that thing looking damn right just like that. Plus, if youre towing, you don't wanna mess with a lift.
Can't wait to see the roof rack and helper bags on it! Keep it up!
I agree it looks fine at stock height but their's too much rubbing from the tires. I hope he does at least a 2 inch leveling kit if nothing else
Another vote for changing the timing belt if it’s been a while since it was done. I’ve done one on a 2UZ on my 2006 tundra and it takes a while, but isn’t too bad. I’d recommend getting the AISIN brand kit as they are an OEM for Toyota, but its much cheaper than getting the parts straight from a Toyota dealership.
I don't think it needs a lift. The dark flares already draw the white body up. It looks badass.
I think it needs just a little lift to even it out
@@_Gingium_ Yes a little wont hurt
@@_Gingium_ agreed, like an inch in the front to get rid of the rake
@@_Gingium_ just get an airbag rear for towing
@@_Gingium_ I personally think lifting it a little will make it look goofy, I think it's the perfect height as is.
The timing belt is one of those must do maintenance items on these vehicles. Highly consider doing it and the water pump.
Aye aye! I'll pull a cover off to see if it's been done recently.
@@_Gingium_ these are interference engines so definitely check it out. Change interval I believe it’s 90k-100k per Toyota.
I really want a Toyota Sequoia, they're pretty inexpensive and spacious and comfortable. Plus you can modify the hell of of them and they look amazing.
Its hard to find parts tho
@@imoutsideurwindow most parts are shared with the Tundra
@@ryanward7663 As a tundra owner, this is true. All the engine parts for the 2UZ are useable with the Land Cruiser, LX470, Tundra, and some 4Runners.
Think about a trans cooler when you are towing often.
Those old Toyota Sequoias are bulletproof. What a great deal, cuz people ask a ton of money for these.
Check out the condition of your radiator and look for leaks. Condition will depend on how abused it was (obviously). Mine leaks slowly and overheats, but it has been abused in ice, snow, mud, and sand. Knowing you, you'll replace it anyway, but it will be extremely important for a tow rig.
Don't use suspension spacers if you're going tow. Loving the rig!
I thing you're right, maybe just put a airbag in coil spring to keep the ride height.
He didn’t say he was he was going to put a helper spring there’s a difference
The Limited also gets the Multi-mode 4WD I believe. That means 2WD, part-time 4WD with locked center diff, and the super cool Torsen AWD mode, that gives you traction similar to Audi Quattro that you can use even on dry pavement.
My dad had one of these in a dark green for many years, and then bought a new Tacoma in 2008. Many good memories growing up!
ive had several of the same generation sequoias. like 4 of them lol. Theyre wonderful trucks, specifically 4wd ones. Only bad thing about them is horrific fuel enconomy. As far as a tow rig, it should be great. My parents towed a 30' long sailboat effortlessly. truck needed a brake upgrade and some good trailer brakes but as far as pulling it, no issues! oh and that JBL system is a nightmare when it comes to upgrading the radio.
What kinda mpg where you getting? I’m getting like 6mpg towing on a good day and that seems wrong
@@_Gingium_ Around town got 10-12mpg. Towing distroyed my mpg; got 8-10mpg on the interstate. Around 6mpg in town. 4wd Sequoia are known for many things (being well built, reliable, good offroad... and getting horrid gas milage). Rear wheel bearings are also a nightmare to do if it ever starts making noise. Love the channel dude! Been watching for a long long time. The Sequoia really fits you! Would make a great cheap overlanding rig after youll all done towing; although i know you have the kei van for that. Maybe just a bad ass rock crawler\offroad build in the future! Tons of companies make full weld together front and rear bumpers + skidplates and shit for them! You could take it as far as you wanted!
@@_Gingium_ I have the tundra, same engine but an 06 so has the 5spd auto. 7-8mpg with a 20' enclosed trailer loaded to about 7k in fairly mountainous terrain 65mph. With our small enclosed trailer or a jet ski double it does 12-13mpg at 80mph. Unloaded highway 14-16mpg @80. Not sure if your calculation accounts for the larger tire size but does seem a bit low unless you are hauling near max load.
@@_Gingium_ Never saw more than 18mpg on long I-5 road trip. Normal around the town 10-14. Indestructible engine. Cheap plastic that break. Like the rear hatch handle internals. Fortunately, lots of market support with better quality parts.
this is why I love gingium, he always does some out of the box stuff man
Wow you think that's out of the box lol
@@masterflow101 for a tow rig, yea, it is. An old Toyota Sequoia isn’t exactly what you’d buy to tow a trailer with a racecar in the back
Super clean. Looks amazing already.
Can’t wait till it’s done 😎
Liking the new rig 🤙🏿
...its big enough to hide in for some ninja intros that we all love so much 🤞🏿
Hey man! Since it's going to be a tow rig, I recommend looking into a bigger brake kit. The Lexus GX460 has a bigger rotor/caliper. If you'd like, I can DM you on instagram to help you get in contact with someone who does the machining for the calipers so they fit correctly. He's big in the first gen tundra/sequoia world for brake swaps. It'll be a direct bolt on.
Best truck I've ever owned and cheap to maintain (ive had obs fords, c10, silverados, suburbans, superdutys, jeeps), 2004 sequia with close to 300k miles(bought at 100k). With regular maintenance the only big things that I've had to replace are the timing belt every 100k miles, oe coil packs 250k miles, and the rear diff exploded 275k miles...but it had a rear axle seal leak, so maybe that could have been avoided. Only complaint is the thing has always felt under braked. Excellent purchase!
Finally a proper truck build let's go baby.
What about the Mazda truck he built?
@@flamegamezzb9474 yeah bro I'm aware of that. Actually used the same 4 link system on our coyote swapped 95 f150. I am saying it's been a minute since we had a truck. Thanks for reply brother. KEEP GETTING AFTER IT
Awesomely cheap rig, not a fan of the black, but it’s all in what you like. I think it gives it that f150 work truck look. But honestly if you like it that’s what matters. Super clean truck great price and it’s nice that it’s maintained!
I will tell you we've have had our 07 for over 10 years!!! Built to last bro love it
Have the same tow rig. Bulletproof set up. And i think they look super good too.
tow rigs are great to have. changed the tires to 10 ply mud terrains. any weather is no problem.
Saw the new tow rig today in Athens - Looks even better IRL!! LED headlights (Fahren on Amazon) absolutely changed my Tundra (and my 2000 CR-V).
Turned out great! Happy trails in the Toyota ☘️
Perfect those things are awesome
This is dope. Now I can see all the cool mods he will do to this Sequoia.. I have one too but this is will give me ideas.. also make sure to do lower ball joints on these puppies cuz they are big girls!
My parents have a 2004 Sequoia. I grew up with the car, a lot of good memories with it. Once my dad gets a new rig to replace it, I plan to use it as my tow rig. Maybe restore it a little and modify for softroading. Definitey want to put in those helper bags too
Would recommend adding a transmission cooler and and oil cooler especially if you plan on going through mountain passes while towing that's the first thing we do with all our tow rigs is upgrade the cooling
I second this. Very much would recommend. It's something so easy and cheap to do but definitely is worth it in the long run
Sequoia’s already come factory with a oil and transmission cooler, albeit fairly small but it does have each
put toyoya atf
Yeah the truck already has both!
Toyota are one of the best car you can get. They run for ever if you maintain it. I have a 2003 4Runner that is fully loaded for over landing.
soon as i got my sequoia,, Lower ball joint and some Stop Tech Rotors and Brake pads,, Auto Zone, dont click on brakes, scroll down to performance,, and Stop tech will show there, got front ,and rear for about 300 best thing i did for mine owned 2 years and has 306K miles ,bought 296 and runs like a champ!
This is the type of series I'm here for.
gingium: can't go wrong with the panda look
"mid-engine minivan intensifies"
Also consider changing the fluid in your front and rear differential’s and the transfer case.
never thought I'd be watching a Sequoia build series but this is fun to watch
Love the editing on this video👌🏼 fast pace
Genuinely enjoyed the sequoia tow rig introduction! Been wondering if they make a good tow rig for years now
Amazing video gin!
With your tools and skills you could do a custom fabium high clearance front bumper. Would be really sick content and a one off look! Stoked on the new rig! Please keep it!
Imo…I’d definitely do the exhaust, get some flex-a-lite e-fans, and get an AEM “cold air intake” all three made a noticeable difference on my 02 & 06 4.7L tundras.
IMO you should do the door trim piece black as well to tie the front and rear together
I second this ^^
i have an 03 2uz 4runner with 2.7 million miles and I hauled my house from FL to KY on half a tank of gas
through the mountains
barefoot
in the snow
Hell yeah, Toyota baby!
Sweet find
the sequoia looks sick!
A video like this could've been made into a weeks worth of uploads, you're the best for making it just one! I've always had a soft spot for this gen sequoia, something about it looks so truck-like and it has so much cargo room! Great camping vehicle, hope it works out as a tow rig!
That’s the sickest budget rig I’ve seen in a while
you should keep the badges gold. its a nice contrast
keep the gold man, looks so good now with the black bumpers
Great Video !!
I love older Toyota SUVs. Turned out great boi!
Nice Landcruiser 👍
Love the transformation! Looks like a police truck now
Love it man!!
I’ve had my 01 tundra with the same drivetrain for about eight years and it’s been in the family for years. All those talking about lifting it and what not, I would advise you don’t do it if you do want it used as a tow rig. You will be squatting a decent amount. Like it would be excessive. But I would recommend retrofitting with projectors. It’s a very simple process and the outcome is exceptional. Especially if you got the new headlights and the reflector being backwards like they were with mine.
I gave my monitor a physical thumbs up when you said you were doing helper bags lol.
That thing looks awesome
Always thought you have good eye man, that’s sick
Timing belt/water pump is definitely the life of a 4.7 don’t skip out on it
Personally I would’ve left the badges gold, it makes it more from that era
Go to your local paint supply store and get HUD-12 for undercoating. It's cheap and works amazingly well. Not at all like the junk you buy from the parts stores that never dries.
Solid deal. If you do want a beefy SUV that can tow a bit more look into the WK Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7l. Something like 7500lb tow capacity in a mid sized SUV that's AWD but also has a selectable 4 low. Love my 05, it's been a great vehicle.
The Sequoia should pull quite a bit. My grand dad had a Tundra that he pulled a 32ft 5th wheel all over the US with. All it had was airbags in the back and it pulled pretty good.
El sequoia 2gr tiene 5.7
I forgot they even made Sequoias that long ago, what a great purchase!!
With the trans it is worth changing the filters when doing a fluid change I would pencil it in for your next service it's a fairly easy job.
I suggest painting bottom trim area of rockers black also would make look taller
i recently picked up an ls400 for $2500. in almost perfect condition. tons of maintenance done too, including timing belt like 5k ago
Great buy
That's a good look, man.
Should be able to fix the rubbing issue! With an offset either on the wheels or a spacer at zero, you can hammer the pinch weld and chop the front bumper at a 45 degree angle where it meets the tire and it should help without the need to lift!
Cool rig
Looks tight 👍
2uzfe gang gang. Love the one in my 03 4R
Sweet MCM tee mate! 🇦🇺🍻
Sweet rig, delete that trans cooler in the radiator and add a bigg external trans cooler to prevent the "pink milkshake"!! change the lower ball joints with some factory oems there known for failing prematurely! (especially with lift big tires and excess weight ie; towing) and check them routinely. I built my wife a 2jz 4runner which shares similar front suspension and intend on a solid axle swap just to know the family is safe, you content is daily inspiration
It looks great :)
I love all of your content Gingium, but this video was FANTASTIC to watch. The simple mods and builds like this are exactly the kind of things I love to do when I first get a car. 🙌
Lol I just bought one exactly like this! I love it
So not sure if you have this I your other 250ish comments but the pan doesn’t hold that much fluid in the tranny; the torque converter holds the most. To do the best maintenance on a tranny you need a 16 quart flush and to replace the filter on the valve body under the pan. Then I would recommend adding an external large cooler if your towing all the time.
Do the timing belt/water pump kit. I have a 4.7 4Runner and I got extremely lucky losing the timing belt going 80mph and somehow didn’t bend any valves but most don’t get that kind of luck! Mine still runs like a top after doing the repair, but you know I won’t be waiting another 150k miles to do the next belt change!
Great find, I found one for 1900mand put 4000 parts and labor and still looks like a beater. And the damn rear door for me money pit
What a great deal honestly
Seems like a solid rig. I like it! 👍
Woooooooo new truck build
Sick deal! I have a '01 and a '02
That Toyota will last a lifetime don't get rid of it KEEP IT
I actually like this build gingium has gotten sone weird one but this one is nice and budget nice work 👍
i love gingium cause he doesnt stretch things into 10 different boring videos like other people.
Hope your keeping motivated!! Videos are killer lately! Don't give up!
Trans shift kit will help a lot!
Pretty cool. Really Aussie looking
Pretty good buy.
Please DONT LIFT IT BRO its really clean like that, great vid bro, id like if u kept the gold on the badges its gives of a nice vintage look, OH BACK UP CAMERA
If you were closer, coukd have sold you my 82c30 1 ton. Needed work but reliable. I used it to tow my 40ft gooseneck
How crazy that I just bought a Toyota 4Runner yesterday and gingium buys a Toyota the day after
Make absolutely sure you do the timing belt on time. That gen of toyota trucks and sequoias liked to eat transmissions, so make sure to service it well too.
Who said that? lol
@@ricky_ricardo I did
@@fakename287 are you the muffin man? Who are you?
@@ricky_ricardo I am literally John Sequoia, and I say he needs to change his timing belt and service his transmission on time
The things you want on a tow rig are highway tires (NOT AT), good brakes, comfortable seats, lots of sound deadening, and no extra stuff on the outside killing your mpg (bull bar.)
I came here to say almost the same thing but to add, the Bull Bar is actually just a brush bar if you don't live on a ranch, even then, I'd be sketched out trying to push a good sized bull out of the way with it. If you ever have a front end collision, even a relatively small one, you will wish you hadn't installed that brush bar. They are good for exactly two things, destroying frame rails and radiators when impacting almost anything. I mean, did you see the thickness of the mild steel it was made from? It's not protecting anything and when impacting something, it will twist up and destroy your grill, hood, radiator and most likley your frame horns.
@@gavinhouston1484 My regular job is working with insurance claims and I can say you are absolutely correct about that. Thankfully there are replacement frame horns for most Toyota trucks but chances are that's gonna total your vehicle and increase the likelihood of an injury from a low speed collision.
Totally agree, bull bars are also good at letting the world know that you have no idea what you are doing.
Best daily / tow rig
love this video
