BMW In F1: What Went Wrong?

  • BMW have a much longer history in F1 than most people think, and with senior figures in F1 wanting more manufacturers in the sport when the new regulations come into effect, I thought I'd take a short view back to the past and see what happened to BMW in F1 and why they ultimately didn't deliver a championship.
    If you want to have a more in-depth look into BMW's F1 experience from 2000-2009, take a look at this article:

    I'm from Malaysia, our country started hosting F1 in 1999 at Sepang F1 track. Thanks to that, I became an F1 fan.
    I miss those era, becoming a huge fan of Mika Hakkinen, Kimi Raikkonen and Juan Pablo Montoya. The cars' liveries were really special looking back, Ferrari with red Marlboro branding, West McLaren Mercedes in silver and black theme while BMW Williams were white and blue. It felt like witnessing 2 epic German rivals always trying to beat each other but united to slay the Red Baron's dominance.
    I remember my dad sending his car for service, he'd use Castrol engine oil, and the shop would give Castrol merchandises like BMW Williams F1 team caps and shirts. It was the first F1 merchandise I ever got, it was so special for me.
    Today, I own a BMW, watching this video somehow makes me feel emotional and nostalgic. It has been a long, wonderful journey.
    BMW had said they have no interest to return to F1, it's a shame, but if they were to reconsider it, they have a very happy fan here 🥲

    Great video. Well made. Brings back so many memories. My dad got me into f1 as a kid in the 90's but I realise now that BMW seem to be behind most of my favourite drivers. The first driver I became a fan of was Montoya when he started at William's (a friend of mine nicked his hat for me). Then came one of my favourites Kubica (who I met last year) and he was replaced by my all time favourite driver Vettel who I've been following since he was 17. Why the heck did BMW have to pull out ... It had such a nice livery too.

    BMW are like Honda, in that they do the proverbial hokey-cokey of being in and out of F1. It would be great to see big brand Manufacturers return but I think that some have been stung from past experiences. Toyota got it massively wrong too. It is likely that the brands F1 are trying to entice to the sport will wait and see how the new cost cap affects the privateer teams, like Haas and Williams. If they can build strength and be competitive then a big brand might see it as a worthwhile investment. Power unit costs need to be addressed too but the cost cap might free up some cash to develop a PU.
    I'd like to see VW put one of their brands in, ideally Porsche!

    • @AlexTalksRacing
      @AlexTalksRacing  Před 3 lety +1

    BMW. They could have chased the championship with Kubica, but said no. My god, Robert Kubica got screwed over by corporate decisions, this is why Corporate takeover of independent teams screw their drivers over. When Stewart got bought out for the Jaguar takeover via Ford in 2000, Jaguar took the team downhill after the 1999 season when they got things going especially with Rubens Barichello scoring points, podiums, and even contending for race wins that could have gotten him a win or two had engine failure not happen or had their race strategy work toward their favor. This is why we support independent teams owned by former F1 world champions, and those who want to live the dream not greedy corporations who prefer to focus on preparing new cars based on new rules packages rather than compete for a championship.

    Weird how I'm only seeing this video now. I think your conclusion that BMW would have stayed on if they won in 2008 is wrong, at the time it was strongly rumoured that if they had won they would have pulled out immediately considering it a case of Mission Accomplished. Thiessen really liked being an F1 boss, so made the decision to pull back on the development in 2008 in part to make sure they could continue through to 2009. It's a shame that everything about their 2009 car was aweful, the missed many tricks on the chassis and the KERS system wasn't the best either, this just led to BMW doing what they always do in every series, pull out.

      That seems sadly to be true. The head of BMW F1 Mario Theissan said himself "BMW was not fully committed to Formula 1 in the 2000's and if BMW won the championship either in 2008 or 2009 they would've considered it target achieved and we are going to leave anyway."

    I don't wish they come back. Outside of F1, they currently have perfected the M division with the m2/m3/m4 having some of the best possible engines one would want. I would rather they continue perfecting those than choose to waste some money on some f1 car. Right now the m3 is one of the best price to performance cars I've ever seen, it handles amazingly for its weight, and its truly just such an engineering masterpiece. You look at AUDI & Mercedes who are pussying out and putting hybrids and Full Electric and then at BMW and you see the last good german brand outside of Porsche & Lamborghini.

    If you or any one else thinks that the changes that are being brought in will means that more teams will enter F1 , im afraid you like FIA are living in cloud cuckoo land , with the entry fee going up from $30 million dollars to $200 million dollars which they no longer get back like they used to, instead its shared out among ten existing teams , no manufacturer is going to give the other teams 20 million each , its a bloody stupid rule change , they say it was done to stop teams like the last three that entered F1 from being a joke , i would argue that if the FIA had a back bone and forced the teams to stick to the budget cap things might have turned out differently , what F1 needs to do is ban major car manufacturers from owning or buying parts of teams , they can only supply engines and they must supply at least three teams with engines and each team gets the same spec engine and has to pay for them, this way you dont need to have the high tech expensive engines because they would not be relevant to road cars , this is a sport and should not be dictated to by the importance of a manufacturers road cars engines, if some countries want to ban the sport then just dont race or use bio fuels, strict budget caps and drivers saleries caped at no more than 10 million a year , when 80% of the human population live on less than 30 thousand a year , if you say you cant live on ten million you should take a serious look at yourself , F1 needs radical changes from top to bottom , but no one has the courage to do it and take on certain teams .

    Bmw as an engine manufacturer may be the best engine manufacturer in the history of F1 but the teams that Bmw supplied, such as Williams, did not perform well enough compared to the engine used by Williams. If, for example, Mclaren had had a Bmw engine from 2000 to 2009, Mclaren would have won more races and more titles than Mercedes, However, Williams was not at the same level and with Sauber, the economic crisis of 2008 ruined all Bmw's plans for the 2009 season. Without the crisis, Bmw would have been able to perform very well, and in terms of engine performance, Bmw was the best in F1.

    Kubica would not have won the 2008 championship even if BMW Sauber had developed the car till the end of season. BMW and Kubica were consistent but never had the pace to win races in '08. Kubica won in Canada because all the main rivals, Ferraris and Mclarens, were out and after the race Kubica was very critical towards his team and basically thought that win was just a fluke. I remember following this season closely back then and thought that even thou Kubica led the championship at one point there was no real chance he could win the title against Hamilton and Massa. A bit like Heinz-Harald Frentzen with Jordan in 1999.
