Brilliant little dog mate. I work a springer for search and rescue. My dog works exactly like yours just trained on human scent. She still flushes game when not on duty. Beautiful to watch. I could do with another dog like yours for work 😃 Greetings from North Yorkshire. It’s a grand place to live.
Thanks John, your springer sounds like a cracker 🙂North Yorkshire is just the best, it's the first place I'd look to buy a house and land if I won that elusive lotto 😆😆
My game shooting days are over but I relive them through videos like yours,Dave Carrie`s and my game book.Enjoy your days,I know I did,it`s over before you know it.
We’ve got english cockers just like these for hunting quail down in South Georgia here in the States. They’re truly the best dogs. They’re great bird dogs to begin with, but damn if they’re not the smartest most affectionate dogs imaginable. You have to train them up a bit for bird dogging of course, but not much. Just commands. They know it all instinctually. And they’re as loyal and caring as you could ever want in a companion.
We have an english cocker spaniel as well..hes not trained but he does excatly the same in the wood..just hunting birds and rabbits..keeps running. Great video
Class to watch this, I have a working cocker and would love to get him trained like this. We do take him to wooded area's off lead and its as if he knows already what he was born to do. His recall is great but this is a joy to watch. Beautiful dog to!
Thanks for the nice comments, you don’t have to have a working dog to get involved, plenty of the beating team don’t have dogs, it’s a fantastic day out in the countryside 😁👍🏻
Anyone fortunate enough to have an ECS is indeed fortunate. They put their heart and soul into pleasing. We are fortunate to have Fred Freckles. He’s our heart.
have a working springer and a little cocker both great but the cocker prefers to sit on the peg with me and retrieve yet my springer is brilliant at flushing and retrieving cant beat a good working dog like yours mate love spaniels to bits
thanks so much 🙂 Keep at it, small amounts of good training is better than sloppy training for hours and hours each week is my best tip, quality over quantity 👍
Sorry, I've just seen this comment now or i'd have replied much earlier, youtube isn't too good at notifying me when comments are dropped. Yes, it's one of his best qualities, once I set him away hunting he pretty much just runs around like a headless chicken but never goes too far, if he does try to chase something, a quick shout of his name usually does the trick and if that fails, the recall whistle ALWAYS has him sprinting straight back in to me 😄
@@lukepaul1052 Agreed, I think I might actually be one of only a couple of beaters to use a whistle on our shoot, most of our dogs are very well trained and respond well to handler's voice command alone (apart from the old boy Chris, who blows his whistle none stop at his cocker and it ignores every single blow, without fail !) 😆😆
Find a good gundog trainer, it makes all the difference in the world, Rico is as good as he is because I had a lot of help from a very experienced professional, It's better to drive 2 hours for a good trainer than go to someone who claims to know what they are doing but has little or no idea. A good trainer will teach you how to train your dog properly, get in early before any bad habbits start and ALWAYS ask for homework at the end of a lesson, refresh your brain before coming away with exactly which exercises you should be practicing and working on until the next lesson, sometimes it's all a bit overwhelming training for an hour, I find a quick recap at the end of the lesson with what you should be working on at home helps to focus you on the right things to be doing 🙂👍
it's a he !! lol he's raw fed, mainly The Dog's. Butcher brand, some Cotswolds brand and other high quality raw suppliers and plenty of supplements and extras like ducks feet, goose necks, sprats etc 🙂
Amazing to see such a happy working dog! Great video! Quick question if you don’t mind, we do tracking and truffle hunting with Haggis, our dachshund, but lately we struggle with the cold temperatures as his feet get irritated when exposed for a long time. Any tips? Greetings from @haggisthesausagedog !
ooh i'm not sure to be honest, the only problem I have with Rico is nettle stings annoy him once we stop and he settles down, some of the drives we do on the shoot are full of nettles but most arern't too bad, the stings make him a little annoyed and he licks and chews his paws. As for the cold, it doesn't bother him, I often put him back in his crate on the back seats of the pick up while we have dinner to dry a little on the towels in there and so he can warm up a little before we set off again but I've never noticed any problems with his paws because of the cold ground.
if you recognise the Greggs then i'll just say I'm 50 minutes down the road heading South into the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, I don't want to name any specific locations for obvious reasons, the world has become a funny place in the last few years lol 😉
Yes, some days are longer than this and harder work, he's not so full of himself then but this time he could have probably managed another drive, maybe two 🙂
look at that dog !
is there anything more happy in the world than a working dog , working ?
great video
he's a happy little lad alright 😊 thanks
A free pheasant. There really is no difference between killing a pheasant and killing a dog. Both are conscious animals who want to live.
What a lovely honest little dog he is.
Thanks, very kind to say so 🙂
