The 'PROCESS.' One word that is easily gleaned over - but a KEY term and practice for line / phrase building. Something I'm still working on. Sometimes I come up with a really good line. I like when that happens. 💡

Another exercise that is great to break free from the bar lines is to play a chorus of a tune where you nail the changes and then subsequently play a chorus were you just think of 1 or 2 tonal center(s), and instead just focus on phrasing. For example: Autumn leaves becomes G minor or St. Thomas becomes C major and D minor.

Jens, please make a video about breaking free of the barline. I think it's such an important topic that not many cover in their lessons. Also, I'm definitely the prisoner of the barline and I would love to set myself free
@@JensLarsen It seems to me that those of us who tend to solo more in the "run the changes" manner than melodic paraphrase are more likely to struggle in breaking free of the barline. Despite my best efforts to somewhat spontaneously come up with lines that flow, I still feel that my attention to the harmony holds me back at times, causing choppy phrases.
Great lesson Jens! I always thought that in jazz, rhythm is more important than notes... and also the hardest thing to improve I’m my modest opinion! Thanks for sharing!
you should have the highlight of the video play at the very beginning of the video.. before you even introduce the video itself that way.. people who are not new to guitar playing would understand the entire video in just 5 seconds and go about their day instead of wasting 7 minutes of their lives MAYBE learning sth new.. (not likely tho)
