  • Farriery or the shoeing of horses is an ancient trade that dates back to the Roman empire. A Farrier is a skilled craftsperson, capable of making shoes to suit all kinds of horses and their working conditions.
Since 1890 Farriers have to pass exams to be able to practice professionally. To learn more about the training process of how to become a Farrier, we traveled to Myerscough college in the North West of England to find the next generation.

It's always been a dream of mine to be a farrier because I love horses and and love blacksmithing and welding. Problem is there are very little horses where I live and I would have to leave home.

Fascinating insight into the craft. I am an amateur bladesmith and wondered about the differences. I don't need anatomy and veterinary classes to make swords suffice it to say!

@@Bee_Wagner_ So true, no such thing! Be thankful you've found a job you are passionate about and love. Many people aren't lucky enough to find that. Work hard and I'm sure you'll be an amazing Farrier! Stick with it and you'll kick the other guy's asses at it. Best of luck.

I considered this trade when I was living in New Mexico. But not growing up around horses I felt was a disadvantage. 🥺☹️

As someone who did have that privilege, to put it quite bluntly: yes you would be. HOWEVER, that does not mean you can't become a farrier. It will take you a bit longer to learn (its a brutally difficult trade to get into, steep learning curve), and you're main disadvantage is that you won't be able to read a horses body language, how to move around it, and things like that all come with experience.

It takes years to become a successful farrier. Start young and learn how to handle a horse ride a horse and understand the function of hood capsule and lower limb. Go to good school then do an apprenticeship then slowly start your own biz. It takes years to become trusted and reputable. Learn the farrier show horse business people that have money to support owning a horse.
