  • Mir (Russian: Мир; lit. Peace [homonym: world]) was a space station that operated in low Earth orbit from 1986 to 2001, owned by the Soviet Union and later by Russia. Mir was the first modular space station and was assembled in orbit from 1986 to 1996. It had a greater mass than any previous spacecraft. Until 21 March 2001 it was the largest artificial satellite in orbit, succeeded by the International Space Station after Mir's orbit decayed. The station served as a microgravity research laboratory in which crews conducted experiments in biology, human biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology and spacecraft systems with a goal of developing technologies required for permanent occupation of space.

    that was the only time a spacecraft traveled between two space stations

      +Antonin Mathieu This procedure was used because the then new "Soyuz-TM" wasn't avalaible yet. And also because the previous crew on Salyut 7 was forced to return prematurely to Earth. The commander was sick,so Moscow required them to get back.

    In fact when Soyuz-T-15 traveled Salyut-7, there should be a TKS spacecraft attached on the station.

    Cool! When do you think Io Orbiter will be happening? (Or maybe Apollo-Soyuz Test Project/Apollo- Salyut Test Project?)

    Am I the only one who finds it kind of counter-intuitive that the LES is jettisoned just before the first major staging event? I know that they can still abort using the boosters in the faring but talk about cutting it close

    • @1987VCRProductions
      @1987VCRProductions Před 8 lety +5

      By that time, the Soyuz rocket stack is high enough where the LES tower is no longer needed to ensure a safe separation distance from a malfunctioning/exploding booster. The escape rockets attached to the fairing can pull the Soyuz away from the booster. After the fairing is jettisoned, the Soyuz spacecraft can kick itself off of an errant booster and maneuver to safety and a landing somewhere downrange.

      +William Langvad Play it in your browser and change the youtube site to desktop mode. It probably has to do with music copyright.
