Gozo Shioda said something similar in his book aikido shugyo. Though he was more focused on striking vital points in self defence

My interpretation of atemi in Aikido is that the primary purpose is preventing the opponent from gaining control of the center line. You move off the attacker's line but then you need to take control of the new line before the opponent can. So you put something in that empty space to occupy the opponent's attention. Whether the atemi hits or is blocked is secondary to controlling the line.

atemi is preemptive strike or strike before actual technique. we cant taisabaki forever from someone who wants to touch or hurt us.

In 1925, that is exactly what O-Sensei said that he did- and then realized the art of Aikido.

Interesting, or it could also mean that locks are much easier applied when opponent is stunned, from my experience of ninjutsu and okinawan bunkai karate, I can see hidden strike opportunities in every aikido lock technique. But I guess this is what people more commonly refer to as aikijitsu.

Noar Nono is correct. Entering is key. Atemiplays several roles. It let's you know you have entered . If you can't hit your opponent you probably aren't in a good position. It is used for distraction and balance breaking ,among other things, where a technique can be done. Many of the techniques are to create openings for strikes . The other may hold true too, people forget that ukemi is 1/2 the training. They should be learning how to attack and escape not just mindless be there for nage to throw. The 90% though is foremost about the person applying techniques,, watch Saito and Shioda. Ukes in my opinion , when experienced should try and "hit", touch nage through out the techniques. Shows risk points in nages position, plus creates realistic energy so you learn to use ukes energy. Appreciate your videos.

It would be interesting to watch a video on how an Aikidoka would evade someone attempting a low-level, single-leg take down. I mention it because that is one of the common take downs seen in MMA.
