In previous Stuview TV videos, I’ve taken a look at some of the forgotten television shows from the past that deserve revisiting. Today, it’s the turn of those British television series from the seventies that have taken on iconic status over the years.

I was a young teen in the 70's and loved I Claudius. It made a huge impression on me particularly for Derek Jacobi's acting skills. He is second to none in my book.
He was brilliant and John Hurt.Brian blessed on the other hand was totally in the wrong role as Augustus. 😁👍👍

The Saint, The Persuaders and Randell & Hopkirk.
Loved “The Persuaders”! Here in Detroit, we are lucky enough to get Canadian TV CBC, and between that and PBS we saw an amazing amount of great British TV.

I Claudius is simply the greatest TV series ever. Miniscule budget, but every performance is flawless.
Watched it in the '80s as a teenager. Jacobi astonishing. Biggest surprise: Brian Blessed being restrained.

And the scene complexity. Long uncut scenes with actors coming in to and out of shot speaking long dialogue. Compare that with today’s films that have only a snippet of dialogue before cutting to another actor - easy to edit around poor quality actors.
The cast of I Claudius was a list of world class thespians 🎭.
I Claudius was to ancient history as Harry Potter is to reading. 🔥
Can’t talk about I Claudius without mentioning the greatness of Robin’s Nest

The Sweeney has never been surpassed as far as cops shows are concerned. It is still as gritty and gripping today as it was then. The acting from all cast members, both principal and supporting, was superb and totally believable. The series could have finished on a high note with the heroes walking off into the sunset as it were. Instead, the writers gave a poignant twist with Regan being accused of corruption and at the end cleared, but walking off bitter and angry feeling totally let down by his colleagues and friends.
54 now, remember all of these fondly. Thanks for the memories!

The Onedin Line, Sunday evening viewing, me Gran never missed a one. Another was Sapphire & Steel absolutely loved it, it was late 70s that one and I think ran into the early 80s.

Brilliant series and the music.
People tend to overlook how much impact choosing the right piece or commissioning the right piece has on people's reaction to what they are watching.
I was always a little disappointed that it was written as a ballet about Spartacus, much preferred the tall ships.
I was just about to say, "I remember watching Crown Court every time I was off sick from school," but you beat me to it!!
I watched the repeats of I Claudius recently and it was actually even better than I'd remembered. The low budget was an advantage and the focus was on the performances. Truly brilliant. The Sweeney has been much imitated but never bettered and Gene Hunt in Life on Mars is clearly a direct relation.

I loved Upstairs Downstairs. Whenever I watch it now, I always think of the Stanley Baxter skit. 😄
i'm enjoying watching it just now on ITV, I loved it and it was far better and more realistic than Downton Abbey
@@lsmith9249 I agree. For some reason, I far preferred the downstairs people to upstairs. Hudson, Rose, Mrs Bridges and poor little put upon Ruby (she was my favourite). I used to think, 'What's she going to ne blamed for this time'.

I loved Jesus of Nazareth. Robert Powell was utterly captivating. A really good list but you are right, I was too young to appreciate I Claudius.

He was beautiful as well and that always helps. For thousands of years humans have appreciated and celebrated other beautiful humans, man or woman. Now we are supposed to pretend that we don't.

Loving your content. The 70s contained so many examples of landmark tv. If there was a subscription channel that showed nothing but 70s programming, I’d happily subscribe to it.

I wasn't keen on Rentaghost, I thought The Ghosts Of Motley Hall was much better. Jesus Of Nazareth was massive at the time, even at the age of 10 this was a must watch for me, and I'm not even religious. Epic.

Thank you BBC for giving us I Claudius. I saw it first on PBS in the US in 1977 as a teenager and was anything but bored stiff. I could probably recite entire scenes from memory. Yeah, it’s that good. I would love it on streaming. Britbox are you listening?

Fantastic list, Stu. With the exception of Rentaghost I loved and watched them all. My favourite Monty Python sketch is the army parade ground where the soldiers were ordered to “Camp it Up”. Hilarious. The other shows I loved and watched were The Professionals, Colditz, Hazel, Thriller, The Persuaders, Budgie and Randall & Hopkirk Deceased. Thanks for a great trip down Memory Lane.

Crown Court.... That brings back some memories, especially when off ill from school, Crown Court made my illness worse.....🤣🤣🤣. I remember watching Pipkins, The Sullivans, How We Use to Live, Van Der Valk but I could not wait for 4:15pm for Children's TV.
Looking back,Pipkins was creepy! I've had nightmares involving Hartley Hare!
I used to live Pipkins. Pig was my favourite, with Topov not far behind.

The Woodentops, Bill and Ben, Andy Pandy.
They were old then, even for me, and made for much younger children. But when you are off sick, the utter joy of watching that lunchtime slot of programs made for children was magical. And it didn't even matter that you didn't like them much.
I have the I Claudius series on dvd...... absolutely brilliant

I subscribed to Britbox for a few months, it was good to see I Clavdivs and Cadfael again.
I thoroughly enjoyed this visit to my younger years. This is the decade when British TV really established a position of being world class.
I used to watch Crown Court whilst skyving of school, Afternoon Plus, Pebble Mill, something called Houseparty where these women would all meet and exchange recipes etc.

Snap! I used to watch Crown Court while supposedly at home studying. I grew up in Southampton where Houseparty was made. The mother of a friend of mine used to appear on it fairly regularly.

I think that the top best TV Shows of the 1970s were 1. The Sweeny, 2..The Professionals, 3 Minder, 4. Starsky and Hutch, 5. Hawaii 5 0.

I didn't realise that my friend. I was only 14 in 1977 when Minder started and in a Children's Home in Cheltenham Gloucestershire and it was on passed our bedtime. We had to be good to stay up and watch it. The only time I saw Minder was when i returned home to my mum and Portsmouth in the school Holidays.

of all the tv series made in the 1970.s Rentaghost was my favourite ever series shown on bbc 1 the theme music was very memorable I wish we could go back to the days of the 1970.s

There could be a whole video on kids sicknote TV 😊. Pebble Mill, Crown Court, The Sullivans, Armchair Thriller with the spooky chair intro and Farmhouse Kitchen, whose tie-in book every late 70s mother had a gravy stained copy of, all watched on a hand-me-down portable black and white Pye television.

It was great in the depths of winter watching Crown Court whilst of sick from school 😅 😉
I was a teenager in the 70s, remember all of those but watched few, a lot older now and have seen every episode of upstairs downstairs and the sweeney and think they are fantastic.
Recently they repeated 'I Claudius' I was too young originally to watch it I would of been bored stiff, when I did get to watch it I was blown away by the acting and hung on every word, it was phenomenal and another was of course 'Jesus Of Nazareth' that was superb and what a cast, did you know that Robert Powell was down to play Judas but when Franco Zefferelli saw him he noticed his eyes and thought do you know how about playing Jesus instead and the rest is history, he did a wonderful job to everyone's delight. And I loved 'Rentaghost' that was a favourite programme of mine and Timothy Claypole the Jester I liked the best, happy days!
SO many memories. Being a shift worker I could often see Crown Court at lunchtimes and really enjoyed it. Of course The Goodies and Monty Python were amazingly funny. I really liked I Claudius and only recently got the whole series on DVD from my local library. It was wonderful to see it again.
i Clavdivs was superb, as you said. I first saw this in the early 2000s then read the two novels it's based on; I Claudius and Claudius the God.
8:17 I still have one of those bowls, except is mushrooms soup.
UFO was a big favourite of mine with the scary plot of aliens harvesting human organs, plus the groovy music and Gabrielle Drake in an array of silver miniskirts and jumpsuits. Some other fondly remembered ones are the Christmas Ghost Stories, Pardon My Genie, The Persuaders, Public Eye, Thriller and Mandog.
Love your channel Stu, brings back so many memories. My favourite tv shows of the 70s were Space 1999, Angels and, right at the end of the 70s, Blake’s 7. I also loved the classic Doctor Who, Jon Pertwee was my favourite. I got into I Claudius when it was repeated in the 80s. All time favourite Python sketch has got to be Spam! Thanks for the memories.

Another classic 70s kids series was 'Kizzy'. A bittersweet tale of a young Romany girl who has to get to grips with village life, school, local bullies, and adoption once her dear old gran passes away. I think all six episodes are available on CZcams. Worth a rewatch.

you seem to read my thoughts....(must be an age thing) me born - 1964....yes i do boringly remember my wondeful mum watching I claudius...i was bored stiff! i just did not get my mums enthusiasm ....now i really do, get it.... thank you so much for reminding me how special my childhood was...all the best.
Born in '66 so age wise we are pretty close and only as I've got older do I begin to realise and appreciate the likes of I Cladius.I feel very lucky that through the likes of CZcams and some dvd sets there's a chance to se some of these again. A lot of stuff is overhyped but it's true to say that there are some iconic programmes from that period.
Great video as always - just wanted to add one to your list - Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy from 1979 starring the incomparable Alec Guinness, absolutely brilliant and gripping from start to finish!

I was a churchgoer at the time and I loved Jesus of Nazareth. I didn’t realise there were so many great actors in it though. They must have had some budget. Also, I had forgotten they had a real jury in Crown Court. I used to come home from school for lunch and tried to watch it then. Thanks for all your videos, they always bring back good memories.
Talking Pictures TV are showing some at the moment; I was watching a story today.
On a story several weeks ago,the camera panned over the jury.
I was astonished to see a lady whom I would, much later know for several years.
Watching that channel,and following this one is a stark reminder of how the quality of television production and scriptwriting has declined in the years since these programmes were made.
Now,if only they could gain the rights to screen "I,Claudius".👍
It was the BBC and they don’t have big budgets. Most of those actors were up and coming at the time - not the luminaries of today. 🇬🇧
Great to see a clip of Barbara Murray in Jason King. I used to think Peter Wyngarde was the essence of cool. I grew my hair, I learned to walk like Jason King (this is so embarrassing) and I even wore my shirt cuffs out over my jacket cuffs like him (face bright red at that memory). It was only years later I discovered he wore a wig and liked the lads. Great series all the same, a really good character too and, if briefly, Peter Wyngarde was one if the biggest names in showbiz. Peter Wyngarde as Jason King. Probably responsible for the tremendous popularity of Jason as a given name for baby boys in the early to mid Seventies. Hmmm!

I Claudius bored the pants off me as a kid. I found Upstairs Downstairs in my late 20's and got hooked right away. I had a massive crush on Jean Marsh. I did love the show UFO as a kid. Looking forward to the sitcom show. I loved the various Doctor series (At Large, In the House) as well as Butterflies and the best comedy of all time, Reggie Perrin.
TV Trivia: The theme from Crown Court was on the "B" side to Eye Level (Van Der Valk Theme) by the Simon Park Orchestra single.

I think my favorite Monty Python sketch was the architect. I Claudius was a magnificent production which will never be topped.
Jason King --- absolute class
I missed the 70s TV as I was posted to Germany from 72 -77 in the army but I did see some of those. I was expecting to see Budgie in there. Iain Cuthbertsons Charlie Endell was brilliant I that especially when he said you cease to amuse me Budgie. I tried to use the phrase, changing the name. The first time I saw Space 1999 was on German TV. I think it was called Moonbase Alpha over there.
I watched I Claudius as a kid with my parents and siblings in the 70s and loved it, it was pretty gruesome in parts though, and I still remember some of the more macabre scenes. It probably wasn't quite appropriate for kids, but it was a different time then. Even the play parks were potentially lethal. Randal and Hopkirk (Deceased) was another hugely popular detective series in the 70s.
Me and Stu born in same year, so know we missed Python first time around. BBC repeats in '80s and VHS of 'Holy Grail' and 'Life of Brian' changed my life. For the first time it was okay to make fun of authority figures.

For me, the childhood, weekly go to, was 'The Ghosts of Motley Hall'. Great that I can get to watch it again, as it's still on CZcams. Also fond memories for me of the sick days off school. Along with 'Crown Court', I would add 'The Sullivans' and 'The Way we used to live'. Peace All

How! was one I always watched. There are some episodes here on CZcams. Also Think of a number with Johnny Ball. Animal Magic, Crackerjack, Rubarb and Custard, the list is virtually endless! Think my mum used to watch something I think was called The Cedar Tree.
i met sue Sue Nicholls in london about 20 years ago and i asked her about being in rentaghost she was so nice, and i used to watch cown court followed by a program called house party

OMG !!! This has brought back so many fond memories for me. As a kid born in 1965 living in a home with only, one TV and 3 channels.

Space 1999, Tomorrow people, Black Beauty, What Katy did, Follyfoot, loved the theme tune more than the show. Sapphire and Steel.Vision on. Some programmes you have mentioned and the titles I remember watching, but can not recall a single episode. At least back then University was the start of some thing better, eg The goodies, Monty Python and Queen.
The Sweeney was the best cop series ever made!, not only thr gritty stories and the violence but the brilliant humour made it a must see show every week, i loved Monty Python and The Goodies too but i can honestly say i never watched Rentaghost or Grange Hill, just didn't
appeal to me at the time, during the 70's TV was awash with American TV shows, they dominated most evenings so anything British was usually worth watching.
I have r to imagine a world where Lawrence Llewelyn Bowen catches a glimpse of Jason King through a Redifusion window and exclaims "Dad?"

Alex Haley's "Roots" ; Kunta Kinte and Chicken Geoarge were so memorable and gave a dumb Northern kid pause to think about the world he lived in.
"Rich Man, Poor Man" reminds me of lying on the carpet with two ounces of nut brittle and asking my mum what was going on - the pre cursor to Dallas in that respect.
Let's not forget The Champions from the sixties. I recently enjoyed that one all over again watching the surviving episodes on You Tube
The Sweeney is unique of any 70s show to this point, in that every single person who took part in the production is now dead.

I couldn't abide that stupid show Rentaghost. The Goodies rocked! Jesus of Nazareth was magnificent. Holds up so well to this day.
I hated Rentaghost but loved most of the others. I certainly remember Crown Court from days off sick (skiving) from school. Daytime TV was very limited and mostly rubbish in the 70s! A couple of series I remember were A Family at War and Sam, which both seemed to go on forever. The World at War was another iconic series.
When I was little, I loved "The Good Life" known to us in the United States as "The Good Neighbors"!
I remember one scene that became funnier when i became old enough to understand it. Barbara found her husband Tom's Santa Claus suit. He complained that now she knew it was really him as Santa. She said "After what he gave me last year, it better have been you!"
Such a wonderful series. As well as being funny, I always found it very relaxing to watch too.
Upstairs Downton
Was that the love child of Upstairs Downstairs and Downton Abbey? 😅
So many favourites from that list Stu, Grange Hill, Rentaghost with Audrey from Corrie 😁 we never missed Upstairs Downstairs, me and my mum loved that one, i still watch The Sweeney now on ITV4 along with Minder, loved Dennis Waterman in both of those, Monty Python was always on, but unlike my older brother who found it hilarious i was maybe a bit too young to appreciate the zany humour of it at the time, tho i do remember a programme post Monty Python called Ripping Yarns that i used to watch that was so funny. @stuviewtv I know it does seem a bit strange considering some of the content in them as well, and on at a later time would allow a new audience to watch it, i only manage to catch a few episodes if I'm home from work early or on a sick day 😁

I remember watching Jesus of Nazareth every Sunday when it was on (you stated 2 shows, bit I'm sure it was actually split over 4 weeks).. I invariably watch it again over Easter as I still find it a fantastic watch.. 😀 👍

Superb vid and yes, like you I was just a kid but I do remember Monty Python. Same fav sketches were the Hells Grannies, the argument sketch, DeJa Vu and Twit Olympics. Those guys were light years ahead of anything else.
Rentaghost was great and Timothy Claypole was definitely my fav character.
So funny to think that Robert Powell would later be in the Detectives with Jasper Carrott
Was watching some old episodes of Give Us A Clue which shared the same theme music as Grange Hill.
I loved The Goodies and would tune into ISIHAC to hear the wonderful humour that Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden were so capable of.

I remember in one of Jasper Carrott's stand-up routines he was talking about filming The Detectives with Robert Powell - "He used to be Jesus Christ, now I've got him down to my level."

I was about 16 when I Claudius was on, and it was a bit of a shocker. Very gory, especially some scenes with John Hurt as Caligula. Derek Jacobi was a revelation in that series, such a good actor. As was Robert Powell in Jesus of Nazareth. The cast-list in that was amazing, everyone wanted to be in it. I forgot it was a mini-series, I thought it was a film. Monty Python and the Goodies were great, so anarchic at the time. We always used to talk about The Goodies next day at school. My favourite Python sketch was probably the one with the Four Yorkshiremen and the contest over who had the poorest upbringing!
I was a bit too old to watch Grange Hill, probably working by then. I remember a series called "Four Idle Hands" in 1976 with Ray Burdis about some lads who left school and didn't know what job they wanted to do. On ITV I think.
Not heard of Four Idle Hands. I'll have to check that one out and hopefully feature in another forgotten TV video. Thanks Carole!
