Rome had many enemies, but Persia really was their greatest enemy. The only state able to fight effectively against Rome at the height of its power. 22 wars fought over nearly 700 years.

Their greatest enemy, sure, but that doesn't mean a lot. Almost every single war fought between Rome and the Persians resulted in a humiliating defeat for the Persians. The Romans could've easily subdued Persia but it would've been disastrous on the long run.

@a.s.7936 I would agree, Persia's capacity for sustained campaigns rarely extended beyond a few months or a limited number of years. In contrast, Rome had the capability to assimilate conquered lands, while Persia remained closely tied to its core territories of inner Iran. I would count the Parthians and The Sassanids as diffent thought, Different dynasties and how they fought war as the Sassanids were more successful in their wars than their more Nomadic counterparts.

After the Arab invasions, Roman-Persian relations improved. The Byzantine Emperors and Buyid Emirs of Persia would exchange gifts between courts. For instance, in the late tenth century, Emir Azod-al-Dawla of Buyid Persia received a Byzantine gift of 200 royal robes and horses, white falcons, and other goods. At his death he left 500 pieces of Byzantine royal silk. However, the two powers also had conflicting interests over the region of Upper Mesopotamia. In the end, the Hamdanid Emirate of Syria and Jazira was partitioned between Byzantium and Persia.

The geographer Istakhri, who was active in the late 10th-century and wrote; "The best cultivated (ma‘mur), fairest and most fertile part of the world, and the most established in its political life is the kingdom of Iranshahr."[38]
      Herzig and Stewart adds that;[37]
"Considered together the preceding materials offer important clues to the question of Iranian identity under the Buyids. In the first instance we have rulers who are unashamedly Iranian and who sought by genealogy, title and homage to Persepolis to show their connection with the pre-Islamic Iranian past. At the same time, the inhabitants of the Buyid kingdoms and eastern Iranians showed a sometimes embarrassingly high level of self-esteem as the people of Iranshahr."

Persia fell due to the incompetent leadership of Yazdegard, I know that this sounds insane but the Rashiduns did not actually intend to destroy the Sassanids completely, it is a complicated matter but in short if Yazdegard did what Heraclius did and just decided to live with the fact that the Arabs took his most valuable lands then the Sassanids could have maybe just maybe held off the Arabs, after the crushing loss in the battle of Yarmouk, Heraclius decided to bid farewell to his lands in the Levant and did not try to deplete the empire any more on the other hand after the crushing loss in the battle of Al Qaddisyah, Yazdegard decided to try a last ditch effort to beat the Arabs at the battle of Nahavand, but the empire was already on its last breath and he decided to gamble the fate of his empire on this battle and unfortunately he lost it and it was not long before the empire collapsed rapidly afterwards

Can't really blame the 12 year-old for being proud and stubborn. What really fucked the Empire was when Kawad II and his goons decided to coup and execute Khosrow (his own father) and all his own brothers in 628.

The Arabs didn't just stop at Syria with Heraclius. The repeatedly tried to conquer Anatolia, and even Constantinople. They also went on to conquer Egypt and Africa.
The borders between the Arabs and Byzantines weren't that way because Heraclius gave up on the Levant, but because his successors aggressively defended Anatolia from further losses.

    • @williamrobert9898
      @williamrobert9898 Před rokem +3

@@histguy101 I am talking about the Rashiduns mate, Heraclius did give up on the lands that he lost to the Arabs. The Levant fell first before Egypt that is why I mentioned it, The Rashiduns’ only notable win in Anatolia is the capture of the city of Tarsus, they did not penetrate any further as far as I know and they never attacked Constantinople, their successors (The Umayyads) did however, I actually can not remember a single battle in which the Byzantines were able to defeat the Rashiduns
Edit: but yeah his successors did a great job at defending Anatolia from the Umayyads

    غُلِبَتِ الرُّومُ
The Romans have been defeated. (Ar-Rum 30:2)
    فِي أَدْنَى الْأَرْضِ وَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ غَلَبِهِمْ سَيَغْلِبُونَ
In the nearer land (Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Palestine), and they, after their defeat, will be victorious. (Ar-Rum 30:3)
Within three to nine years. The decision of the matter, before and after (these events) is only with Allah, (before the defeat of Romans by the Persians, and after, i.e. the defeat of the Persians by the Romans). And on that Day, the believers (i.e. Muslims) will rejoice (at the victory given by Allah to the Romans against the Persians), (Ar-Rum 30:4)
    بِنَصْرِ اللَّهِ ۚ يَنْصُرُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ ۖ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
With the help of Allah, He helps whom He wills, and He is the All_Mighty, the Most Merciful. (Ar-Rum 30:5)
