    Hey all - I made a mistake! My brain was thinking of crossbow expert and not sharpshooter when I talked about the long range feature vs. the close range one. So I’m sorry for any confusion!

    A sneaky nerf to Great Weapon Master is the damage only gets added when you take the Attack Action on your turn. No extra damage to the Bonus Action attack or Reaction attacks.

    The game didn't need more consistency. Failure is fun, risk reward is fun.

    • @LevelUpmmo
      @LevelUpmmo  Před měsícem +1

      That is certainly one point of view! I wonder if it was a matter of "speed" to remove that decision making *OR* if it was that people REALLY dislike missing and it caused more people to miss?

      But not every player feels the same way. And besides, with DM permission. Players who want the risk/reward option, can ask if they can take the old Great Weapon Master feat. Plus, the thing that annoyed me with the old Great Weapon Master feat, was forgetting to declare I was using the bonus.

    The Sharpshooter worries me a bit. Under the new rule it will be possible to get Advantage on an attack at Long Range. Especially handy for a Sneak Attack.

      Sharpshooter already did this in the original version, firing in melee is the additional part here??

      @@LevelUpmmothe long range shots are part of both sharpshooters. The Close range was part of crossbow expert

    Sharpshooter already allowed you to attack at long range... so all it did was take away the possible increase to damage while adding a close range option... so I think it's a pretty massive debuff

    • @LevelUpmmo
      @LevelUpmmo  Před 13 dny

    Great video
    I think Great Weapon Master was both a nerf and buff. In that it's now usable at low levels, but with a lower damage bonus. And at higher levels and particularly at level 17 the damage bonus is close to the old Great weapon master feat, without penalty.
    I think Counter Spell was nerfed, since the old Counterspell could automatically counter level 3 spells or lower. And the spell slot of the countered spell was used up. From a player's perspective, I think Counterspell should've remained unchanged from it's 2014 version. One of my favorite Counterspell stories is when I counterspell a Fireball, and an ally countered my counterspell. So we all got hit, and I went down from damage. As for Sharpshooter, it was nerfed. It got a +! to Dex and added being able to shot in melee, but removed the damage boost. I would've added Proficiency Bonus to damage for ranged weapons, without the heavy property, instead of firing into melee. Since Great weapon master's damage bonus works with heavy ranged weapons now.

    The counterspell text is a huuuuge buff to the sorcerer class in my opinion... They are the only caster class that have natural Const ST, while other classes will have to spend a full talent in order to do the save with prof, sorcerers will always be one talent ahead

    • @LevelUpmmo
      @LevelUpmmo  Před měsícem +1

      That’s interesting. I wonder if they had that in their plans. Like they wanted sorcerer to have that advantage.

      I'm actually intrigued to see how other abilities work around this, given that I thought warcaster would just be even more mandatory, but warcaster only gives you advantage on con saves to maintain concentration which wouldn't apply here....

    Great weapon master/sharpshooter are far weaker for martials as it used to provide a reward to increased accuracy, like the barbarians reckless attack.
    Sharpshooter allows attacks within 5ft when it used to be the best damage boost a ranged weapon user could get.
    Counterspell still deproved monsters of non-spell slot spell abilities, or players from theor free castings of spells - but it does feel far les spowerful now, which is good because its no longer a "must-have" and provides space for people to take other spells.

    • @LevelUpmmo
      @LevelUpmmo  Před měsícem

      So hold the stance that an ALWAYS on smaller bonus is worse than the risk/reward of a big bonus? And thank you for sharing your thoughts! :)

    • @lukenator115
      @lukenator115 Před měsícem

      @@LevelUpmmo the problem with the always is that it's too small until you're into tier 4 gameplay. Most people don't go past proficiency bonus 4 and therefore the extra damage has been halved.
      There's no reward for being super accurate anymore - you either hit or you don't. The "power attack" was a way to reward players who had actively tried to improve their chances to land a hit.

    • @malmasterson3890

      Actually the math for GWM works from a side grade to buff at higher levels when accounting for the +1 & eventual +4-6 to damage on every attack. If it was the playtest version I'd agree it's a nerf, but this was a decent trade-off.
      I am dissapointed about the nerf to Sharpshooter Damage though, but I get it since Ranged combat was just far superior in 2014.

    • @lukenator115
      @lukenator115 Před měsícem

      @@LevelUpmmo the problem is the maths. The always isn't an always, you still have to hit. Sure, -5 is bad
      But often low AC has high hp and vice versa. Add in things like the archery fighting style and your chance to hit can be +7 at level 13 with a non-magic weapon.
      This difference doesn't even matter at low levels (the most common levels) because +10 damage is so unbelievably groundbreaking to characters that do an average of 9 damage. Also, the accuracy penalty could be compensated for by reckless attack, flanking, or other ways to boost accuracy. Damage is harder to improve than accuracy, so more damage > better chance to hit

    • @lukenator115
      @lukenator115 Před měsícem

      @@malmasterson3890 i agree that +6 and +10 are close, and a -5 penalty is not worth +4 damage.
      But at tiers of play like this the wizard has wish and the martial is just for decoration.

  • @Erik-um1zn
    @Erik-um1zn Před 26 dny

    The -5/+10 was bad design. It makes it so that the feature is usually only used when the penalty is mitigated/doesn’t matter.

      Depends on the player for sure. I know people who once they had it, they ALWAYS took it. Win or lose. It was just how they liked to do it.

    Soooo Sharpshooter they basically drop the damage and gave you the Close Quarters buff from crossbow expert...

    These are nerfs. Trying to lipstick on these pigs just makes everyone look bad. People who like the nerfs and say so, at least acknowledge that these are nerfs...I can respect their opinion even if I disagree and wont be using them. That said, those who try to make others think these ARENT nerfs are lying....and there is no need for it...Sleep is terribly nerfed.
