  • We visited the Rhondda Heritage Park, home of the former Lewis Merthyr Colliery in South Wales, for their annual classic car gathering. A superb mix of cars was displayed by the Glamorgan Classic Car Club and South Wales Classic Car Club with everything from an AC Aceca to a modified Ford S-Max and a 1929 Rolls-Royce 20/25! Another great show, and another round of "which one do I want to take home?". It's the Capri 2.0GL, that wins it for me this time. I wouldn't want the V6, I'm not going to go fast. The Volvo 960 was close to getting picked though...if it had been the estate it would have won.

I am glad the modern stuff is getting a mention, as you say they will be the newer generation of the car scene and the car scene does need to keep going despite the situation nowadays with ULEZ and what not. On another note, it’s nice to see majority of the cars waxed up as I can see the beading on them. Good stuff.

Your comment about pubs having tractors outside for the kids to play on brings back memories of Thorp Arch Trading Estate between Wetherby and Leeds. This had been a wartime munitions factory (complete with brick Nissen Huts separated by earth banks) which had been turned into a trading estate: there was a carpet warehouse and a furniture warehouse etc. Boring as hell for kids, so there was an adventure playground for the kids to play on while their parents went to choose a new sideboard. But it wasn't a bog standard playground. This had vehicles - real ones! There was an old fire engine, complete with ladder; there was a wooden galleon; there was even a helicopter fuselage (no main and tail rotors). I was in my element playing there.

My daughter is learning to drive and has bought herself (mature trust fund) a Peugeot 107 city bug. What an absolute hoot to drive. So far we've serviced it, had the AC regased, and put a 4 speaker stereo (sony & Pioneer) done the gear shift hack to take out the bagy-ness out of it. Its as close to an original 1000cc mini as you can get for a few quid. Have a go its 3 cylinder of madness and smiles. Good to see city bugs at a show. Great vid hubnuts.

Coupled with the very professional hand held mic I thought I was watching a slick large budget BBC 2 TV programme. "because HubNut" is becoming a thing of the past. Very much enjoying Hubnut and Miss HubNut. Pending forth coming nuptials will there be a channel rebranding to Mrs HubNut? She was "inspired" by a wedding dress in the Heritage park Museum.

After I'd been working for a few years and made a bit of money, I decided to treat myself. I saw a second-hand bright red Mark II Golf GL - effectively a GTI but with a carburettor engine that wasn't *quite* as powerful. But it still went like sh1t off a shovel. I loved that car.

I had a 940 Wentworth estate (also silver) & loved it. Its one flaw was the aerial which was quite long & came out of the rear roofline, so if you forgot to retract it as you drove into a multistorey it got bent to b*ggery. As did your wallet, because it cost a hefty wedge to fix . And I did forget, several times! 😢.
That design glitch aside, it was a terrific car.

Ford Escort Mk.3 and 4 cabriolets were converted from the three door estate body.
The Ford Escort Mk.5 RS2000 had twin bonnet bulges. One was necessary to clear the 2.0-litre, twin cam engine, and the other was added for symmetry.
The shovel nose on the Escort Mk.2 RS2000 was mainly a marketing thing. The competition department didn't use it as it was bulkier, more vulnerable and made it harder to mount additional lights.

Two of my cousins in Italy had Peugeot 106 Rallys. One of them managed to roll his of the twisty roads around the home village... Sporty, but perhaps not ideal everyday transportation. I'm more interested in the Volvo 740. I owned two of these, a GLE and a Turbo. The GLE had the small quad headlights in common with all North American Volvos at the time, but the Turbo was interesting. It appeared to have been originally purchased in Italy and as such it had the spring mounted stay on the inside of the windshield common to all cars in Italy and in which you slot the car's registration to make it visible from the outside. Inside the windshield there was a sticker for an Italian insurance company. The rest of the car, however, seemed to be standard Canadian spec, including the 2.3L engine in lieu of the 2.0L normally used on Italian 740s, and the extra-large windshield washer reservoir most manufacturers fit on cars destined for our market. The headlights were the large rectangular European versions which by then had also been adopted on Canadian models.

Classic schoolboy error @11:16, Mr HubNut - there was no such thing as a Ford Classic Capri - it is a Consul Capri. Notwithstanding, there's no-one I know of with a wider breadth of knowledge when it comes to old cars, than yourself! 👍🏻

@@HubNut I can never get my brain around Ford's use of "Consul" to describe variants of its other models. I believe there was a Consul Classic, a Consul Capri - and of course Regan and Carter's NHK 295M in The Sweeney was strictly a Consul though it looked just like a Granada (with which it is often confused).

Pure badge-engineering. The ADO16 was available as an Austin, Morris, MG, Riley, Wolseley and Vanden Plas. The latter were more plush, the MG and Riley a bit more sporty. All under the British Motor Corporation.

@@HubNut They were distinguished as well by different dashboards: some (Morris?) had a long rectangular speedo-cum-fuel/water-gauges, with a ribbon speedo; others (Austin, MG, Riley, Wolseley, VdP?) had separate circular gauges. And the dashboard was beautifully polished wood on some versions.
I suppose badge engineering was just an extreme form of the different trim levels L, DL, GL, GT etc offered on (for example) the Ford Escort.
