How I Breed Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows

  • If you’re looking for information on how to breed White Cloud Mountain Minnows you’ll find numerous videos on this topic. They all say breeding is easy, but it took several attempts for me to get a reasonable amount of fry. Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows are hardy fish that supposedly breed readily without a lot of fuss, but my attempts took a bit more attention and effort than others claim. For example, it’s frequently said that White Cloud Mountain Minnows don’t eat their fry but I’ve never been able to get a reasonable amount of fry without hatching them in a separate tank. The fry of Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows are very, very small, but with the right food they survive and mature without a lot of effort. Despite the setbacks, I’ve gotten a lot of joy and satisfaction from breeding Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows and I recommend them as an excellent choice for anyone who wants to explore fish breeding.

    This video is fantastic! This aesthetically pleasing, minimalistic, and straight to the point video is so refreshing! The pace is perfect. Everything you say is informative and it makes the video stand out because it’s refined AND entertaining without having to resort to constant jump cuts or clipped meme “reactions” to add to the entertainment value. I can enjoy a jump-cutty video that relies more heavily on “cheap” entertainment because who doesn’t like joke references etc? However, this is just a refreshing video style we don’t see too often on CZcams anymore.

After a few days this "leaf" turned out to be a fry and he also had 3 siblings!!! They are doing well and the other fish don't bother them. They hide in the moss growth.
    I was so excited to see them but I am not on any breeding plan with them, it just happened! No special feeding or transferring them. They are lovely and orange now and growing.

    Hi,
    I have had WCMMs for four or five years.
    I have five outdoor ponds/containers with them and one aquarium indoors.
    Never have I been able to get any fry produced in the aquarium but they breed like flies outside!
    The indoor fish are the most pampered and best fed--due to propinquity more than anything.
    From my experience, the fry don't require special feeding...I always have plenty of algae and supplement that 2-3 times a week with some flakes etc.
    I would like to see your video on infusoria though because i try to give the fish some variety....they seem very partial to dried shrimp!

      @@jaymiller3238 Jay,
      Could you not devise some kind of cover,mesh perhaps,to keep them safe at night?
      I don't have raccoons etc to worry about here on New Zealand so never gave it a thought.
      I ran some green,plastic mesh under the surface in one outdoor pond a few years ago when the neighbours had small children....not ideal but doesn't interfere with the fish.
      ( some kind of lid for nights only would be more aesthetically pleasing!).

    I have a heavily planted tank (like the first one you showed) and I use a strong canister filter with a sponge prefilter on the inlet to prevent anything from getting sucked in, I see them spawning everyday yet I haven't seen a single fry... Any suggestions? I wonder where all the eggs end up...

    • @jaymiller3238
      @jaymiller3238  Před 2 lety +1

      Probably in the bellies of the adults. The strong filter might still be a problem, even protected with a pre-filter sponge. My display aquarium has a canister filter and I've never seen fry in that tank, ever.
      If you plan to spawn and hatch in the same tank, without removing the parents, there needs to be something on the bottom protecting the eggs from predation by the adults, marbles, large gravel, thick plant cover, etc.
      Maybe most importantly, there has to be dense plant cover to protect the fry at the surface. I had best luck with floating hornwort, but I'm sure other floating plants could work.
      In my 10-gallon breeding aquariums, with sponge filters, java moss on the bottom and a thick mat of hornwort on the surface, the propagation literally got out of control. I eventually had to pull out all the males and move them to the display tank. By that time, I probably had 400-500 juveniles to deal with. What a mess! lol

      @gallardo20000 Před 2 lety

      @@jaymiller3238 Thank you for the good information! yes the filter is so strong it creates so much surface agitation I doubt any fry could even survive the current at the water surface. Thanks for that great suggestion. Until I get around to that, you can search for and find lots of existing videos about how to make spawning mops. It's pretty simple, but if you have any questions, let me know. I'm happy to help.

    • @jaymiller3238
      @jaymiller3238  Před 10 měsíci

      Those clumps of green yarn you see at 00:55. Think of them as artificial bushes where the fish can deposit eggs. Once the eggs have been laid, the mops can be easily removed before the parents eat the eggs and placed into a separate hatching tank.

    • @jaymiller3238

      Without seeing a picture I can only guess, but my own fish seem to develop some black coloration as they mature. I'm not a fan of that look, but I understand some breeders actually select for that trait. You might visit the channel of WhiteCloud Dynasty to get more experienced feedback on this question.

    • @jaymiller3238
      @jaymiller3238  Před 4 lety +1

      My September attempt wasn't very successful, only three offspring. I tried using java moss in spawning dishes then moving the dishes to the hatching tank. Now I'm going to try spawning in a 10-gal with marbles on the bottom and heavy planting, leaving the eggs to hatch in the same tank as the adults. All that moving back and forth was tedious and not very productive. I don't know, maybe my adults have super powers for finding the eggs and eating them.

      @@WhiteCloudDynasty You're right. I just have marbles on the spawning side of the tank where the plants are. The other half of the tank is bare bottom and that's where I feed. Not a perfect solution but I think it will work.

    How to tell difference between male and female

    • @jaymiller3238
      @jaymiller3238  Před 4 lety +5

      Adult females are slightly larger and have more rounded whiter bellies. Males are more brightly coloured, streamlined in shape and will engage in fin-flaring behaviour with each other. Males supposedly have fan-shaped dorsal and anal fins while females have more triangular fins, but I've never been able to spot that difference for myself.

    I had 1 success on breeding. I had 5 fry at one point yet only 2 manage to reach adulthood. The 2 grew up and have mated with the other fish. They bred again but none survived. The two that survived were unexpected; I temporarily housed the mountain clouds in my tank of scrap plants and the fry somehow survived by eating the algae and whatever else in the tanks.

    • @jaymiller3238
      @jaymiller3238  Před 3 lety +1

      That's cool you managed to raise two fry without a lot of fuss. I find that if I can get them past the first week or so they're pretty easy to grow out but if I don't do frequent water changes then I'll lose a few.
