You were asking about finding ladders in the mine. It is harder to find them when the spirits are in a bad mood, easier to find when the spirits are in a good mood. You may want to consider placing a chest near the elevator at the mine entrance to clear some inventory space so you do not have to trash items so frequently while mining.
