    Hi, thanks for the question! Japanese Fighting Fish is just another nickname for Betta, which is the shorter name for Betta Splendens. They also go by the nickname of Siamese Fighting Fish since they originate from Siam and Malaya (now Thailand and Malaysia). The people of Thailand and Malaysia have actually collected these fish since before the 19th century!

    Hi Lee. It's a little difficult to tell from your videos, but your white male looks to be a DoubleTail of some sort while your orange/red boy looks like a Super Delta. In your video description to "Bettas new tank" it says you tried to put them together because you saw others together, is this true? Chances are you saw females in one tank, female Bettas can be housed together in groups of 5+ in heavily planted tanks of over 10 gallons. Males can not and will fight and kill each other.

      Hi MONSTERDAN24, if you check out our Facebook page we have addressed why we didn't add in the Elephant Ear and the Dragonscale Bettas to this list.
      The reason being is because EE Bettas are not a TAIL type, they have modified pectoral fins. EE Bettas can come in Veiltail, Halfmoon, Double Tail and Plakat types.

    Hi Pete, it's hard to tell from your description what type you have. If your Betta doesn't have long fins (even shorter than the Plakat types) you may have a female Betta. If you check out our Facebook page (link in the description) we have tons of photos there you can check out, as well as one showing how to sex your fish. If you're still unsure you can send us a message with a photo on our FB page and we can tell you what kind of Betta fish you have. Cheers!

    I had a giant betta once. I thought it had simply grown bigger from age.

    • @CheemoBettas
      @CheemoBettas  Před 9 lety +1

      Giants are amazing, I would love to own one some day. We have had lots of different tail types here, all store bought fish, males and females both. There are two of us who work here on CheemoBettas and currently we both have King males and I have a Super Delta X Halfmoon and my partner has various females. I myself had been wanting a King for years and finally found the perfect one, he's white and cellophane with blue and black spots. We found his brother a week later at the same store, cellophane and white with blues, blacks and greens. I got the first guy that same day and named him Monstro, a name I had been saving for years. The 2nd we named King Arthur, we got him the next day.
      Monstro is in a temporary home of 10 gallons and will hopefully be upgraded to a 20 long in the near future, i have a 20 long currently but i have that Super Delta cross living in there. King Arthur lives in a community tank with a sorority of females and some dwarf Gourami, that tank is a 29 gallon.

    • @lominero5
      @lominero5 Před 9 lety

      CheemoBettas
      That is awesome. Do you worry about putting Gouramis with bettas? Every time I've tried that the Gourami kills my bettas. Also How big would a tank need to be to have multiple bettas inside. Similar to their natural habitat.

    • @CheemoBettas
      @CheemoBettas  Před 9 lety +3

      Luis Reventon Well Bettas come from Thailand, the wild Betta fish live in rice paddies that can be knee deep and up to a mile or so long. Betta fish can live peacefully there claiming their own bits of territory with their bubble nests and when other Bettas come along they will occasionally fight for dominance and territory but their battles don't last long since they can swim away and escape one another.
      While we don't recommend new comers to the aquatic world to set up multiple-Betta tanks you can keep multiple females in a 10 gallon aquarium. There needs to be at least 5 females of roughly the same size and lots and lots of plants and decorations. This way the girls can have places to explore and hide if one of them wants to pull rank and try and fight. They also need to be even tempered, if someone in there is too aggressive she will need to be removed because she can easily kill the other females, especially if she is larger than anyone else. Having multiple females of at least 5 or more will disperse the aggression and help keep everyone more peaceful with one another.
      A single male Betta can be added to a sorority if the females are all peaceful and if the male is also peaceful. There are some male Bettas who are far less aggressive than others and can easily live with other fish. But keep in mind to destroy bubble nests if he ever happens to build one or else you stand the chance of having an unwanted spawn happening. Spawns are super expensive and if successful you can hatch up to 500 babies and then the males will have to all be in their own separate tanks and it's just a ton of work.
      The larger the aquarium the better. You want a tank that has a large footprint, meaning more wide than tall. Since Bettas are Anabantoidei fish, they breathe air from the surface of the water as well as through their gills straight from the water. If you have any long finned males in the tank they can actually drown if they can't get to the surface in time to get air.
      For a few years now we have kept Gourami with Bettas, both male and female. Never have we had any aggressive Gourami. Occasionally they will chase one another, but that's usually over in a few moments and they get along rather peacefully. Just remember to make sure there is enough room for everyone and that you aren't pushing the stock in the tank, never overstock and it's way better to understock your tank, less work and less stressful on your fish. 10 gallon is a minimum, but you would really be best off with a 20 long for any type of community tank, as having only a 10 can quickly make the ammonia rise and you can have some issues there very fast and it can kill off your fishies.

      We see what you did there, however:
      There actually currently isn't a strand of "Full Moon" Bettas, though we have seen some that are "Over Halfmoon" where their tail starts folding back towards their body. Though we have seen some smaller pet stores who have misnamed their Betta types and have called them "Full Moon" and Halfmoons have been called "Moon Tail". When looking at a Double Halfmoon they have two separate tails that are both very large, which is why they have this name.

    • @CheemoBettas
      @CheemoBettas  Před 9 lety

      Growing up they did call them Siamese Fighting Fish because they came from Siam which is now Thailand. Siamese fighting fish, B. (Betta) Splendens, are frequently sold in the United States simply as "bettas". Fish fanciers are thus often unaware that, as of 2006, around 65 species are classified within the genus Betta, including types of Gourami. Commonly now though when people refer to the word "Betta" they are talking about the previously names Siamese fighting fish. I've also heard people calling them "Sea Monkeys" which are not at all what they are, so called sea monkeys are a Brine Shrimp so those people are completely wrong.
      "The name Betta (or betta) is pronounced /ˈbɛtə/;[4] the first part is the same as the English word bet. By confusion with the name of the Greek letter beta, the name is often pronounced /ˈbeɪtə/ in American English, and may be misspelled with one 't'. The name of the genus is unrelated to that of the Greek letter, being derived from the Malay word ikan betah ("persistent fish")." from a Wiki
